Good Fridays w/Padre: The Horror

October 26, 2018 by Father Sorin

Notre Dame is the only university in America that has had two very popular and flattering major motion pictures made about it: “Kunte Rockne, All American” and “Rudy.” As a general rule, you don’t want a movie film made about your college, unless you hated it and want to join other people in laughing at it. Interestingly enough, “Rudy” had its world premier in South Bend exactly 25 years ago this month. That season, the Fighting Irish went into the last game of the year, at home, undefeated ...

Sunday School w/Padre: Victory & Defeat

October 29, 2017 by Father Sorin

“Defeat may serve as well as victory to shake the soul and let the glory out.” So said Edwin Markham, the poet. And as the Irish defeat yet another ranked opponent by more than 20 points, climbing yet higher in the rankings themselves, perhaps it’s appropriate to ask whether a one-point loss to Georgia was better than a two-point victory that night. For truly, it served to shake the team, and their triumphs since then have indeed been glorious; but would they be in the same place today had they ...

Waiting for the Phone to Ring

June 28, 2017 by Jimmy Grant

As we are finally inching towards July and in desperate need of football content in our lives, I hope this piece does not ramble too much. I remember being a ninth grader the last time Notre Dame won the National Championship. Back then, I thought his would happen regularly. Time and adulthood has proved otherwise, but still we press on. It is funny how our fandom evolves or even ebbs and flows. I buy “The Shirt” every spring, for starters. I think it is a good cause, but more importantly ...

After Last Night, I See Only Four “Likely Wins” Left

September 18, 2016 by Jimmy Grant

We can now confidently conclude that the Texas loss was no aberration. It was not the result of a hostile crowd, an outmatched-but-inspired Texas team or some fixable defensive errors. Notre Dame is a deeply flawed team this year; last night confirmed that. It was almost hard to watch the Irish make huge errors on special teams, continue to play defense with the density of Swiss cheese and make questionable coaching decisions in a game they absolutely had to win. There was seemingly no ...

Defensive “Change” Must Come, One Way Or Another

September 8, 2016 by BJ Konkle

"To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often." - Winston Churchill. Much has been discussed, written, and analyzed of the 50-47 loss Texas handed Notre Dame this past Sunday. Many have called for change among the defensive coaching staff as it relates to the 50 points a young Texas team hung on the Irish defense. Ironically, the change that is being clamored for is due to the inability to do just that - change. In the ever evolving landscape of today's college football, ...

Fall camp produces the perfect mix for any college football junkie - immeasurable aspirations coupled with unlimited potential. The 2016 Fighting Irish are no exception. Many positional battles follow #NDFB into fall camp and understandably so with the solid depth at all positions. Let's do a quick rundown of what to expect. Depth, baby! Everything this fall will revolve around the exceptional depth that has slowly been built year over year. The coaching staff has recruited exceptionally well ...

Four Irish Footballers Turning 21 During Fall Camp

July 20, 2016 by andrewwinn

Perhaps you've heard of the "beer mile," where participants drink a full-sized beer and then run a quarter mile four times over. It's a competitive event, sure, but not one I'd suggest doing during the hot August heat in South Bend, Ind. Fall camp under Brian Kelly usually opens in the first week of August, which is great if you're not happening to reach legal drinking age soon thereafter. So let's pour one out for senior TE Durham Smythe, junior RB Justin Brent, junior S Drue Tranquill and ...

ND Football Supports Fundraiser To Prevent Child Abuse

June 24, 2016 by andrewwinn

Sixteen Notre Dame football players signed autographs and met community members as part of a fundraiser Thursday for Prevent Child Abuse St. Joseph County. The meet-and-greet was part of a four-day event called Roofsit, which is in its 20th year. It's the brainchild of two U93 DJs who wanted to help abuse victims. This year, their on-air marathon and fundraiser is happening at Martin's Super Market in Granger. Players who participated were: QBs DeShone Kizer (#14), Montgomery VanGorder ...

Will Redfield Prove Five-Star Talent?

June 1, 2016 by BJ Konkle

Welcome to a series of posts we’re calling “Five Question Marks.” In his third entry, BJ Konkle answers a question on the minds of many Notre Dame fans: Is this the year Max Redfield demonstrates a talent worthy of five stars? Max Redfield’s three years at Notre Dame has been an absolute rollercoaster ride. The highly treasured 5 star 247 sports composite ranked recruit from sexy recruiting hotbed Mission Viejo, Calif. was originally committed to play football at the University of ...
