Writer’s Blocking Scheme

March 6, 2017 by Bayou Irish

"It's been a busy week on Lakes St. Joseph and St. Mary." I tried to snap myself out from under my writer's block by channeling Garrison Keillor. It didn't work. So I tried some Earnest Hemmingway: "Brian Kelly's fingers ached. Great drops of rain plonked against the window. He hated Twitter." But neither worked. I did, however learn, that I might be able to write as well as Brian Kelly and I might know as much about Notre Dame sports as does the creator of A Prairie Home Companion. As the ...

Key Matchups Against Duke

September 24, 2016 by Steve Price

Both the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-2) and the Duke Blue Devils (1-2) have been disappointments so far this season. The Irish came into the season with high expectations but couldn’t prove themselves against big-time programs. On the other hand, Duke lost to programs they needed to beat - Wake Forest and Northwestern - to even stay relevant in the ACC. Both teams’ only wins came against weak opponents, as Notre Dame beat Nevada 39-10 at home and Duke crushed North Carolina Central 49-6 in ...

Defensive Line: Know Thyself, Know Thy Enemy

August 30, 2016 by Steve Price

You can have the best playmakers in the country, whether it be wide receivers, cornerbacks, or running backs, and it doesn’t mean you are going to win. The game of football is won up front, in the trenches, with the big boys. If you missed it, we covered Mike McGlinchey of the offensive line. In this installment of Know Thyself, Know Thy Enemy, we cover the players who take a pounding every year: the defensive line. For The Irish: DT Jarron Jones (Sr.), 6-foot-5, 315 lbs After missing the ...

Analyzing the Fall Camp Depth Chart

August 11, 2016 by BJ Konkle

Fall camp produces the perfect mix for any college football junkie - immeasurable aspirations coupled with unlimited potential. The 2016 Fighting Irish are no exception. Many positional battles follow #NDFB into fall camp and understandably so with the solid depth at all positions. Let's do a quick rundown of what to expect. Depth, baby! Everything this fall will revolve around the exceptional depth that has slowly been built year over year. The coaching staff has recruited exceptionally well ...

Recasting “Hamilton” With ND Football Players

June 5, 2016 by andrewwinn

"Hamilton" is the smash Broadway musical that has garnered a Grammy, a Pulitzer Prize and 16 Tony nominations. Since the hip-hop musical (listen here) about our the founder of our nation's financial system is currently on repeat in my house, I decided to combine my two loves and ask: Which Notre Dame football player would I cast in each "Hamilton" role? I don't know anything about each player's rapping and singing skills, so instead I'm going to assign players based on how similar their ...

Will The Irish Defense Improve Its Pass Rush?

May 27, 2016 by BJ Konkle

Welcome to a series of posts we’re calling “Five Question Marks.” In this entry - the second on a series - BJ Konkle answers a question on the minds of many Notre Dame fans: Will Brian VanGorder and the Notre Dame defense have a disruptive pass rush this season? It has been no secret that the Irish defense has significantly lacked a strong and consistent pass rush the past few seasons under Brian VanGorder’s defensive system. Yes, there have been flashes of well-designed blitzes and ...

Blue Gold Game Preview: Defensive Line

April 15, 2016 by chrisavila_01

In our final day of previews, HLS takes a look at quite possibly the strongest aspect of the Notre Dame defense: the defensive line. Defensive line coach Keith Gilmore's defensive front will face a number of challenges due to personnel changes and the development of defensive coordinator Brian Van Gorder's scheme, but has a good shot at being more disruptive up front than last year's squad. We’ve seen a blitz work at times for Van Gorder when linebackers and others in the secondary crashed the ...

Assorted Thoughts from the 2015 Blue/Gold Game

April 20, 2015 by Ryan Ritter

Notre Dame Football graced us with their annual teaser of football season with the Blue/Gold Game this past Saturday. Of course, this means that it is time for every ND blog in existence to throw out some reactions from the practice game. HLS, of course is no different (save for the fact that I think everyone else already has theirs up), so it is time for me to play my role in this annual rite before we enter the long summer of counting down the days until fall camp breaks. Note: the assorted ...
