Analyzing the Fall Camp Depth Chart

August 11, 2016 by BJ Konkle

Fall camp produces the perfect mix for any college football junkie - immeasurable aspirations coupled with unlimited potential. The 2016 Fighting Irish are no exception. Many positional battles follow #NDFB into fall camp and understandably so with the solid depth at all positions. Let's do a quick rundown of what to expect. Depth, baby! Everything this fall will revolve around the exceptional depth that has slowly been built year over year. The coaching staff has recruited exceptionally well ...

Who Should Start At QB?

July 8, 2016 by BJ Konkle

Welcome to a series of posts we’re calling “Five Question Marks.” In his final entry, BJ Konkle answers a question on the minds of many Notre Dame fans: Which quarterback gives Notre Dame the best chance to win? I've saved the most debated question of all for last – Malik or DeShone, Zaire or Kizer, lefty or righty? The position is still very much up for grabs as we head into fall camp. Coach Brian Kelly has said that while either player is capable of taking the team to a ...

Notre Dame Football’s Most Promising “Rookies”

June 6, 2016 by andrewwinn

The Irish Illustrated staff collectively ranked the top Irish "rookies" based on who they felt would have the best Notre Dame careers. My top 10 list differed from theirs, so let's take a closer look: 1. Brandon Wimbush (II Staff: #2) If you consider the question, you'll notice it's a little tricky. "Who among the three dozen will have the best careers at Notre Dame?" Brandon Wimbush is a quarterback with all the tools: strong arm, fleet of foot and accurate. I'm not certain that ...

Ravens Select OT Ronnie Stanley #6 Overall

April 28, 2016 by andrewwinn

Ronnie Stanley is the newest member of the Baltimore Ravens, after the team selected him #6 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. Stanley's contract will be for $20,392,342 with all the money guaranteed. Stanley, at 6 feet 6 inches and 312 pounds, started 39 games at tackle for the Fighting Irish. He proved versatile, making 26 starts at left tackle and an additional 13 at right tackle. Draft experts considered Stanley to be the best or second best offensive tackle available in the 2016 NFL ...

Harry Hiestand’s Impact Is Unmistakeable

April 20, 2016 by BJ Konkle

Harry Hiestand is arguably the most coveted assistant in the Brian Kelly coaching cabinet. One could argue that he’s certainly not the flashiest (hey there Prince Sanford), but his presence has significantly improved the ground game, offensive line recruiting and development, and #NDFB as a program. Let’s dive into an eight-year rabbit hole worth of running statistics – four “Pre-Harry” and four “Post-Harry.” From 2008-2011, the running game ranged from mediocre to piss poor. These four years ...

Blue Gold Game Preview: Offensive Line

April 11, 2016 by Bayou Irish

This week, we here at HerLoyalSons are previewing your 2016 Fighting Irish in the run-up to Saturday's Blue Gold game. To make the task manageable and add some degree of coherence (I know, you don't come here for coherence), we're evaluating the team by position-group. Today, we start with the offensive line. If the Irish are to surpass the performance of the squad from 2015, they will need to replace massive losses along the offensive line. Gone is Ronnie Stanley at left-tackle, a likely ...

Notre Dame At NFL Combine: Early Results

February 27, 2016 by andrewwinn

With the NFL Combine half over, here are some of the emerging story lines regarding former Notre Dame players: JAYLON SMITH'S INJURY EXAMINED Linebacker Jaylon Smith gave contradictory - or confusing - answers to reporters' questions about possible nerve damage in his left knee. Smith tore his ACL and LCL during the Irish's Jan. 1 loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. NFL team physicians were allowed to examine Smith today to evaluate the extent of his injury. Doctors will need to ...

Should He Stay or Should He Go?

December 21, 2015 by Moons

Last Monday, as Bayou wrote about, the Football Writers Association of America unveiled its 2015 All-America team. Irish players Ronnie Stanley, Jaylon Smith, Will Fuller, and Sheldon Day were all selected to either the first or second team. While the collegiate career of Sheldon Day will conclude on Jan. 1 no matter how much we all might like him to stick around, the other three all have a choice to make about whether to declare for the NFL draft or not. If each wanted to return, they all ...

Stanley Named Polynesian Player of the Year

December 9, 2015 by andrewwinn

The Polynesian Hall of Fame has named Notre Dame left tackle Ronnie Stanley as its Player of the Year. This is the second year for the award, which is given to the most outstanding college football player of Polynesian ancestry. Marcus Mariota, the University of Oregon's quarterback, was the award's first recipient last year. Mariota now plays on Sundays in the NFL, and it's expected that Stanley will join him there next year. Stanley was a key part of the Irish's success in both passing ...

Notre Dame vs. UMass 62-27: The Game I Hated and Have Always Wanted

September 27, 2015 by Ryan Ritter

View image | gettyimages.com For the first time in a long time, I found myself downright pissed at Notre Dame at halftime. The 35-20 lead that the Irish took into the locker room might as well have been flipped. The effort was uninspiring. The offense sputtered far too often, including a terrible interception due to, of all people, Will Fuller trying to catch the ball with his body and not his hands. The defense looked lost, giving up three consecutive UMass drives for touchdowns, ...
