Checking In On The Undrafted Irish

May 12, 2016 by andrewwinn

Here's the latest on the athletes who played last year for Notre Dame, were not drafted and are now trying to make an NFL team: CHRIS BROWN: There are actually two players named Chris Brown on the Dallas Cowboys roster as of right now. The first is the Notre Dame graduate who was a great complement to Will Fuller in the 2015 Irish receiving corps. The second is a former Cal Poly QB who was invited to a minicamp to prove himself as a wide receiver. In a Tuesday post, SB Nation's Ryan Ratty ...

Elijah Shumate Headed To Tampa Bay

April 30, 2016 by Jimmy Grant

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed former Irish safety Elijah Shumate, according to Irish Illustrated's Pete Sampson. Shumate was ranked as the 14th overall Strong Safety out of 193. At 6’ 216 pounds he more than possesses the size to play that position at the next level. In fact, Shumate actually remarked that he had cut too much weight for the East-West Shrine game and was now back a more viable playing weight. His strength (18 repetitions on 225 lb. Bench Press) and (4.10) in the 20 yard ...

Notre Dame At NFL Combine: Early Results

February 27, 2016 by andrewwinn

With the NFL Combine half over, here are some of the emerging story lines regarding former Notre Dame players: JAYLON SMITH'S INJURY EXAMINED Linebacker Jaylon Smith gave contradictory - or confusing - answers to reporters' questions about possible nerve damage in his left knee. Smith tore his ACL and LCL during the Irish's Jan. 1 loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. NFL team physicians were allowed to examine Smith today to evaluate the extent of his injury. Doctors will need to ...

Notre Dame and Michigan: The End

September 10, 2014 by Ryan Ritter

I'm not used to storybook endings for Notre Dame football. That might sound a bit strange for a program full of feel-good lore, legends, and even a movie about a walk-on that managed to record a sack on his only defensive snap. That was all "back then" as many people that love to hate the Fighting Irish will consistently remind me. Recently, the script for Notre Dame football ends in nightmares. The 2012 season, and the events that followed after it, serves as a perfect example. After an ...

Defending the Option: Who Takes Over for Te’o?

October 24, 2013 by Ryan Ritter

Before the Irish started their 2012 season against Navy, I had a detailed post describing how Bob Diaco runs Notre Dame's defense against an option attack. In short, Diaco throws the 3-4 away for such games and switches to a more traditional 4-3 look. The catch though, was that Diaco had another wrinkle in the assignment football that you usually see in the option: Manti Te'o. To refresh, here's how ND started to assign players to defend the option after the 2010 disaster in the ...

Packaging Rhythm Throws with Base Run Plays

October 14, 2013 by Blog Davie

After rushing for nearly 190 yards per game in 2012, Notre Dame is averaging a meager 137 yards per game this season. While there are a number of reasons why the run game has struggled (graduation of key personnel, playing from behind, etc.), it is clear that the Irish miss Everett Golson's mobility. Defenses are attacking the line of scrimmage with little fear that Tommy Rees will make them pay for over-pursuing the Irish running backs. Although Rees will never be a running threat, Brian Kelly ...

Know Thyself, Know Thy Enemy: Defensive Backs

July 16, 2013 by Twibby

Leading up to the 2012 season, I said that Jamoris Slaughter’s ability to lead Notre Dame’s young secondary would be critical to the team’s defensive success. Well, a popped Achilles, a true freshman running back playing cornerback, and a bunch of Bobby Diaco voodoo later and the Irish put together an excellent season on the back end of the defense. Despite Slaughter being denied a sixth year of eligibility and Zeke Motta being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, the Irish do return the bulk of ...

Notre Dame 3-4 Defense Primer

August 22, 2012 by Ryan Ritter

Here at HLS, I have broken down game film and done in-depth analysis of the Notre Dame offense under Brian Kelly; however, I have yet to show similar love to the defense. Bob Diaco (and his flowing locks), has taken the schizophrenic Irish defense from the Weis era (seriously, three defensive coordinators in five years) and molded it into a true 3-4 anchored by a front seven that is a wrecking machine. While it would be impossible to describe Diaco's entire scheme or the intricacies of the ...
