During Tuesday's edition of College Football Daily on ESPN, analyst Kevin Carter shed some "Lyght" on the quarterback battle currently ensuing between Malik Zaire and DeShone Kizer. Carter was an NFL teammate of Notre Dame's defensive backs coach, Todd Lyght, during their days on the St. Louis Rams. Carter name drops Lyght as his informant in the following exchange with fellow analyst Brendan Fitzgerald: Well, I actually spoke to my good buddy Todd Lyght, fellow Super Bowl 34 champion and ...

Trust Brian Kelly, He’s Good at Quarterbacking
News developed at the end of last week that Notre Dame football head coach Brian Kelly may be considering a two-quarterback system for 2016. Able to choose from Malik Zaire or DeShone Kizer (or Brandon Wimbush), can you blame him? Plenty of you do. In this post, I try to convince you to trust in Brian Kelly. Trusting Brian Kelly is, for many of you, likely more difficult to do than trusting Hillary Clinton. But since I have it on good authority from my friends inside Russia's Foreign ...
HLS Review: The 2016 ND Insider Football Preview
The South Bend Tribune's 96-page preview of Notre Dame's football team is an invaluable resource for the Irish fan looking to get informed before the 2016 football season kicks off Sept. 4. Mike Vorel wrote the magazine's cover story, "Avoiding A Split Decision," on the quarterback competition between redshirt sophomore DeShone Kizer and redshirt senior Malik Zaire. Vorel interviewed former Texas head coach Mack Brown, former Notre Dame quarterbacks Joe Theismann and Brady Quinn and ESPN's ...
Who Should Start At QB?
Welcome to a series of posts we’re calling “Five Question Marks.” In his final entry, BJ Konkle answers a question on the minds of many Notre Dame fans: Which quarterback gives Notre Dame the best chance to win? I've saved the most debated question of all for last – Malik or DeShone, Zaire or Kizer, lefty or righty? The position is still very much up for grabs as we head into fall camp. Coach Brian Kelly has said that while either player is capable of taking the team to a ...
Brady Quinn: Start Malik Zaire At QB
Former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn says redshirt junior Malik Zaire should be named the starter in 2016 - and he laid out his argument to FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman Tuesday. Quinn, who is now a FOX Sports 1 analyst, said he believed "seniority should rule" in choosing the signal caller for the game versus Texas and beyond. He also believes starting redshirt sophomore DeShone Kizer at quarterback could lead to a potentially unstable situation. "[If] they go with Kizer first - if you ...
ND Football Supports Fundraiser To Prevent Child Abuse
Sixteen Notre Dame football players signed autographs and met community members as part of a fundraiser Thursday for Prevent Child Abuse St. Joseph County. The meet-and-greet was part of a four-day event called Roofsit, which is in its 20th year. It's the brainchild of two U93 DJs who wanted to help abuse victims. This year, their on-air marathon and fundraiser is happening at Martin's Super Market in Granger. Players who participated were: QBs DeShone Kizer (#14), Montgomery VanGorder ...
Notre Dame Football’s Most Promising “Rookies”
The Irish Illustrated staff collectively ranked the top Irish "rookies" based on who they felt would have the best Notre Dame careers. My top 10 list differed from theirs, so let's take a closer look: 1. Brandon Wimbush (II Staff: #2) If you consider the question, you'll notice it's a little tricky. "Who among the three dozen will have the best careers at Notre Dame?" Brandon Wimbush is a quarterback with all the tools: strong arm, fleet of foot and accurate. I'm not certain that ...
Recasting “Hamilton” With ND Football Players
"Hamilton" is the smash Broadway musical that has garnered a Grammy, a Pulitzer Prize and 16 Tony nominations. Since the hip-hop musical (listen here) about our the founder of our nation's financial system is currently on repeat in my house, I decided to combine my two loves and ask: Which Notre Dame football player would I cast in each "Hamilton" role? I don't know anything about each player's rapping and singing skills, so instead I'm going to assign players based on how similar their ...
Will Another Star Receiver Emerge In ’16?
Welcome to a series of posts we're calling "Five Question Marks." In this inaugural entry, BJ Konkle answers a question on the minds of many Notre Dame fans: Is there another star wide receiver waiting to emerge? Notre Dame football has recruited, developed and ultimately produced extraordinary college football wide receivers. Some of these athletes - Jeff Samardzija, Michael Floyd, Golden Tate, T.J. Jones, and most recently Will Fuller - have gone on to successful (and lucrative) ...
A Body Language Expert Analyzes Notre Dame’s QBs
What are Notre Dame's quarterbacks saying with their bodies that they aren't saying with their words? I posed this question to Patti Wood, a body language expert and professional speaker. Wood, once dubbed "the Babe Ruth of body language experts," is the author of "Snap: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language and Charisma." She's been asked to speak on non-verbal communication during hundreds of national news and entertainment programs. When she's not speaking in front of Fortune ...
