Welcome to another edition of the HLS Pre-Snap read. Apologies for the delay today; however, a combination of work and the World Series put me behind schedule. Related, sports have hated me since last Saturday. Anyways, let's get to it. Biscuit kicked off a week of hell by examining five questions on his mind after USC I followed up by taking on three arguments of my own You don't know Jack, Jack Nolan that is I took a deeper look at one of my arguments regarding playcalling and ...
USC Playcalling Breakdown — AKA, I Was Wrong
While I touched on this a bit in my last post, I wanted to go back and rewatch the game to get a more in-depth analysis of our gameplan. I saw a few things in the stands that I wanted to confirm before I posted them. I also wanted to see how Kelly approached these various situations, if our QBs audibled out of the plays too often, and see if it changed the way I see the game overall. I went back and charted all the plays myself. I made a few changes (for instance, Cierre's fumble is a ...
USC Post Mortem
Much like Biscuit did yesterday, I have a few topics that I'd like to address before I get into doing any posts on detailed analysis of the Southern Cal game. I want to make one thing clear though, I am not happy at all about the loss. Just like our other two losses, this one was marked by awful turnovers at the worst possible times. Southern Cal came in with, and God to I hate to admit it, a solid gameplan from Kiffin and they executed it very well. The Irish did not and the fashion in ...

New Golden Domes
Notre Dame decided to unveil the rumored uniform adjustment for the USC game. It wasn't green, it wasn't any form of a throwback, but a new helmet, and the difference between the new and old is downright staggering. According to Notre Dame, the change is a permanent one, and one that Jack Swarbrick has been wanting for a while. He tasked head equipment manager, Ryan Grooms (by the way, you need to be following him on Twitter), with trying to find a color that was more consistent with the ...

HLS Pre-Snap Read
Welcome to the first edition of the HLS Pre-Snap Read! This post will be a new weekly gameday staple at Her Loyal Sons to complete the gameday hype that we've built up throughout the week. The goal is to give you as much Notre Dame material as you can digest leading up to kickoff as well as highlighting some other major stories and games around the world of college football (and tossing in some needed hatred for certain opponents). Since this week is a bye, this inaugural edition will ...
NDtex25: Week 6
Welcome to this week's edition of my little ranking experiment that is the NDtex25. Last week, I was unfortunately in a bit of a rush trying to introduce the method to my madness to my new reading audience here at HLS, so I will try to give a better explanation as to how these teams get their rankings. I had an idea to create a ranking system with as simple of a formula as possible. The main thing I wanted teams to be ranked on was wins and losses, the margin of victory, and the strength ...
Defending Air Force — Beyond the Yardage
Obviously, the biggest complaint about Notre Dame's absolute destruction of Air Force was the fact that the defense gave up a total of 565 yards (5 more than the Irish) with our top ranked rushing defense giving up 363 of them on the ground. It could've been worse too, the Irish managed the option attack much better in the second half after giving up over 200 yards in the first. Personally, I wasn't worried about the defensive performance all game long; in fact, my Twitter feed was ...
Irish Blogger Gathering: In Just Under the Gun
That's right, I'm burning the midnight oil here at HLS! It seems the team here at HLS weren't the only ones that had a crazy week as the Subway Domer had to call a quick audible at the beginning of this week and take over IBG hosting duties. Please do check out his post which has his questions and answers for this week and make sure you check out his home page for all the other IBG responses. 1.So, uh, the defense has looked pretty good. Give me a stat that most exemplifies what this ...
