Chop to the Heart, Golson Transfers to Florida State

May 19, 2015 by Ryan Ritter

It seems like only yesterday that Everett Golson held the most popular position on the Notre Dame football team: backup quarterback. 2011 marked a season in which fans clamored for the rise of Golson. A struggling and turnover-prone Tommy Rees did what he could after taking over for Dayne Crist; however, the good will created by his 4-0 run to end the 2010 season, including the first victory over Southern Cal in ages, gave way to the desire to see the freshman standing on the sideline full of ...

Irish Roulette: Whither Goes Golson?

May 12, 2015 by Bayou Irish

Last week, as news broke of Everett Golson's departure from South Bend, we focused on the why. Today, as Monday turns to Tuesday and we wait for summer and our pastures to change, focus is turning to the where. So tell us, Dr. Kübler-Ross, where will he land? Smart money is, for now, on Florida State. In an irony as great as any ever, Golson, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, may not be able to transfer to an SEC school because of that conference's rule prohibiting the transfer of a ...

Friday Roundup: The “To Bowl or Not to Bowl” Edition

December 5, 2014 by Ryan Ritter

To bowl or not to bowl, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The injuries and defeats of a season lost, Or to take the field against a sea of troubles And by playing end them. To quit—to rest, No more; and by a rest to say we end The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks That losses are heir to: 'tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish'd. To quit, to rest; To rest, perchance to dream—ay, there's the rub: For in that offseason what dreams may come, When ...

Lead, Follow, or Get Out of the Way, Everett

November 17, 2014 by Bayou Irish

In the wake of Notre Dame's shattering loss to Northwestern, the short-comings and failures of the 2014 Fighting Irish touch every position group and go all the way up the coaching tree. But it is with Number Five that I find the most fault, for he has failed to lead the team in any manner that comes across on the field. While Brian Kelly was highly complimentary of his quarterback's leadership following last week's Arizona State loss, I did not see any on display yesterday. There's something ...

Friday Roundup: The “Devils Running Through My Head” Edition

November 7, 2014 by Ryan Ritter

I have no jokes today. No witty insults to throw at Arizona State. No fictional storylines to throw Notre Dame players into. No, this isn't because I've hit a creative wall. I'm not mailing it in because the audio version of this post debuts on the radio this evening. It certainly isn't for a lack of caring either. It's because the main thing consuming my mind is just simply winning this game. After all, I've preached patience for the past couple of weeks in regards to the playoff ...

Florida State Fans Want to Boycott College GameDay, Feel Free to Take Over

October 16, 2014 by Ryan Ritter

My friends over at FanSided broke a story that Florida State fans want to boycott ESPN's College GameDay. Uproxx later picked up that there is also a Facebook group and that the idea appears to be picking up some steam on Twitter. The reason? They aren't happy that ESPN is doing their job and reporting what's going on with Jameis Winston. Apparently, ESPN is supposed to operate like the Tallahassee PD and just ignore everything. Because irony isn't dead, FSU fans aren't boycotting by not ...

Irish Blogger Gathering: This Is the Big One

October 16, 2014 by Ryan Ritter

Well, folks, here we go. It's time for arguably the biggest game of the season and probably one of the few top-five matchups this season outside of the awesome SEC. By now, y'all should know the drill, so I'm going to skip the boring details and jump right into this thing and hit the ground running like I just grabbed some crab legs at Publix. My question: Slow and error-prone starts have plagued the Irish this season (save for an opening TD drive against Purdue). If you're Brian Kelly, ...

CFB Week 5: A Tale of Two…

September 28, 2014 by Ryan Ritter

Years 2008: Notre Dame vs. Syracuse, L 23-24 2014: Notre Dame @ Syracuse, W 31-15 In 2008, Notre Dame managed to win the turnover battle (+2), out-gained Syracuse, and had Jimmy freakin' Clausen at QB, yet still managed to lose against a team that had just fired their coach. There's a reason One Foot Down named this the worst loss of the Weis era. It all but glued Weis' rear to the hot seat in 2009. Last night, Notre Dame lost the turnover battle in a big way (-4) and completely ...

Friday Roundup: The “Crazy World of College Football” Edition

September 19, 2014 by Ryan Ritter

Bye weeks are a time for reflection and perspective on a season. For me, this usually means that I have time to look back on Notre Dame football, see how far the Irish have come, and see how far they still have to go. This year has been a bit different. Just go take a look at this week's IBG, the questions and answers are full of more "wait and see" themes than usual. Perhaps some of that is due to the bye being so early. Perhaps that is because there's been only one opponent and game we've ...

Notre Dame 2014 Opponent Preview: Florida State

July 23, 2014 by Ryan Ritter

For our next Notre Dame football opponent preview, we arrive at the big one: defending national champions, Florida State. Unlike most of the previews that I've written thus far, this is a team that I saw in person last year and on the biggest possible stage no less. Make no mistake, this team certainly lived up to the hype and will easily be the toughest test the Irish face in the 2014 season. We may all have chuckled when returning Heisman winner, Jameis Winston, stole some crabs from Publix ...
