ND Women’s Basketball: A Ring of Honor Induction and a Season Opener

November 13, 2017 by George Bashura

The time has come! The season opener for the ND Women's Basketball took place yesterday at The Purcell Pavilion. The arena had a little edge to it as everyone was anticipating the start of ND Football Saturday night vs Miami. Before that could happen, there was a women's basketball game to play. Prior to the start of Saturday's match-up against Mount St Mary's, ND Women's Basketball inducted one of their own into the Ring of Honor. Kayla McBride played for the ND Women's Basketball from ...

Good Fridays w/Padre: Unexpectations

December 30, 2016 by Father Sorin

What an unexpected year! No one should have been surprised that 2016 followed 2015; but the manner in which it followed was surprising: Not so much as night follows day, but more as a troop of rabid baboons follows the tourist who went to relieve himself behind the bushes and missed the bus back to the safari lodge, all while having his pockets stuffed full of beef jerky and hard candies. The Fighting Irish 4-8: We began the 2016 season ranked tenth and widely expected to vie for a place in ...

Good Fridays w/Padre: NDowment

March 11, 2016 by Father Sorin

A generous fellow named Murphy has just endowed the men’s basketball coachship. This goes along with previous endowments for the women’s basketball coachship, the lacrosse coachship, and of course, the football coachship. The defensive backs coachship is also endowed, and even the athletic directorship. Some people think this is crass, that only professorships should be endowed. I don’t have any problem with setting money aside to pay coaches, since it frees up funds to be used elsewhere. But I ...

Notre Dame Women’s Basketball – a Dash to the Finish

February 22, 2016 by tricerapops

Our Notre Dame women's basketball team is set to start a three game swing to wrap up February, before heading into the ACC tournament. Monday's matchup against 10th/9th ranked Florida State will be televised on ESPN2 (7PM ET) as part of its Big Monday lineup. This will be the only meeting this season between the Irish and the Seminoles and the first time since the Notre Dame beat Florida State in the ACC tourney championship last year. The Irish have played eight ranked opponents this season, ...

Good Fridays w/Padre: 2025 A.D.

January 22, 2016 by Father Sorin

There is a class of third-graders in California that has adopted the University as something of learning partner, teacher’s aide, and mentor. These young lads and lasses call themselves the Notre Dame Class of 2029. I enthusiastically applaud this kind of bold, audacious vision and aspiration; after all, in 1842, I declared a mildewed log cabin on the Midwestern American tundra to be a University. Didn’t go from mission to school to college – never used the word ‘impossible’ – didn’t bother to ...

Notre Dame Women’s Basketball: No Blood No Foul

April 8, 2014 by WhiskyPoet

Leading into tonight's championship game between Notre Dame and Connecticut (8:30 EST, ESPN), you should know that women's basketball isn't about kittens, orange slices and post-game handshakes. There are rivals and there is hatred. There are elbows and shoves and trash talk. When you think of classic sports rivalries, you probably think of Red Sox vs. Yankees, Bears vs. Packers, Lakers vs. Celtics, Florida vs. Georgia Southern. What you may not realize because your head is focused on ...

Notre Dame Women’s Basketball: Final Fourth Time’s a Charm

April 1, 2014 by WhiskyPoet

UPDATED 3PM 4/1/14 We have some unfortunate news for the Notre Dame women's basketball team. After an MRI, Natalie Achonwa did, in fact, tear her ACL in a non-contact injury suffered late in the Baylor game. Achonwa will undergo surgery, but the date has not been set yet. Either way, her career at Notre Dame ended prematurely and her presence on the court will be terribly missed. In an absolutely amazing display of consistency and success, seniors on the Notre Dame women's basketball ...

Plenty of Notre Dame to Go Around

February 25, 2014 by WhiskyPoet

As we enter the final week before Spring ball, I can't help but notice a certain level of restlessness around my fellow Notre Dame football fanatics. Especially after a disappointing, and yet still encouraging, 2013 campaign, it seems like the kids can't quite go to sleep at night. I'm always intrigued by this time of year. It seems like so much (national signing day, NFL combine/draft, spring practices) is going on and yet so little is actually happening. We fantasize about our abilities ...
