Notre Dame and Louisville Basketball: 40 Minutes is Never Enough!

January 18, 2018 by George Bashura

While this is my first season covering Notre Dame sports, I have been a Fighting Irish fan all my life. I have also been a fan of overtime basketball. Tuesday night's game against Louisville allowed me to combine those two of my favorite things.  Coming into Tuesday night's match-up, these teams had played nine overtime games, including the incredible five OT game back in February 2013. Candidly, I was hoping for something similar at the end of Tuesday's game, which was already shaping up to ...

Notre Dame Men’s Basketball: A Team Performance Comes Up Short

January 15, 2018 by George Bashura

It was another cold night in South Bend. Inside the Purcell Pavilion, the action was heating up as the Fighting Irish got a visit from the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Irish came in off a loss to Georgia Tech and the Tar Heels came in with a win against the Boston College Eagles. The Irish were again down two key players going into Saturday's matchup, Bonzie Colson (out for 7 more weeks) and Matt Farrell (day-to-day). While Farrell was in pre-game shoot around and warm-ups, he didn't log any ...

Notre Dame Men’s Basketball: A Huge Win and Another Loss

January 4, 2018 by George Bashura

You could feel that something special was going to happen Wednesday night at Purcell Pavilion. Those in attendance were hoping to see if Coach Brey could lead the Fighting Irish to magical win 394, topping Irish coaching legend Digger Phelps. Among all the excitement, there was a sense of concern as well. The day before, we learned that the Irish would be without Captain Bonzie Colson due to a broken foot. However, ACC play stops for no one. So let's jump into the game recap and see ...

Opening Day in the ACC

Mike Brey Ties Digger Phelps with Win 393 over Georgia Tech

December 31, 2017 by George Bashura

Another cold, snowy late Saturday afternoon in December inside Purcell Pavilion can only mean one thing: it's time for ACC conference play for Notre Dame Men's Basketball. The Fighting Irish entered conference play with a record of 10-3 and their opponent, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, came into the conference play with a 6-6 record, having lost five of their last seven games. Going into the contest, GT held a 9-7 series advantage over the Fighting Irish; however, since the Irish have entered ...

391 Wins for Coach Brey before SLU Game

Pflueger Takes A Stand

December 22, 2017 by George Bashura

The last time we got together, Bonzie Colson went #BeastMode and scored a career high 37 points and Rex Pflueger struggled at moments. It's incredible what a difference 48 hours makes. Before the Irish can get to conference play next week, the Irish had a non-conference opponent in (SLU) Southeastern Louisiana University to play Thursday night. Let's reach for the jump ball and go through Thursday night's game and put a bow on the non-conference schedule. To kick off the scoring on ...

Dartmouth vs Notre Dame

Bonzie Colson: #BeastMode

December 20, 2017 by George Bashura

There has been much discussion on social media surrounding the men's basketball team since their loss to Indiana on Saturday. Fans questioning how do you blow a lead in a game like the Crossroads Classic that, on paper, you should win? Some will say that ND should beat Dartmouth handily because of their record. Would that be case on Tuesday night? Or will the Fighting Irish be caught up in another close match against the Big Green? Let's throw the ball up in the air and lets see what happened ...

ND Men’s Basketball: A Final Tune-Up Versus Cardinal Stritch

November 9, 2017 by George Bashura

Before we get started into Tuesday's game, I need to pause and have a moment of reflection. I must say I am humbled to be covering Notre Dame sports for Her Loyal Sons. A big thank you to ND athletics for the credential to cover these fine teams. I am also very appreciative for all of those who have taken me under their wing and giving me great solid advice. Sorry for digressing, lets get into the game from Tuesday night. The ND Fighting Irish will start the 2017-2018 season off as #14 ...

Digesting a Bad Sandwich: Irish Fall in ACC Final

March 12, 2017 by Jimmy Grant

Last year I watched live the end of the Notre Dame basketball season as the Irish fell with a bid to the Final Four on the line in Philly at the hands of the North Carolina Tar Heels 88-74.  Though the Irish played hard and were in the game until about midway through the second half, you sensed all along it was an uphill struggle. One did not get that feeling tonight though, as the Irish coughed up a second half lead and fell to Duke in the ACC Championship. Five years ago, I may have ...

The Mike Brey Brand

January 17, 2017 by Jimmy Grant

With the Irish at 16-2 and 5-0 in the ACC, the remainder of the NCAA basketball season looks as promising as the previous few under Mike Brey. I’ll admit as a kid, basketball always took a back seat to football in that the Irish football teams were typically better and I generally prefer football as a sport. As I got into my teen years, the gap widened as the Digger Phelps era gave way to John MacLeod. It might be said that Troy Murphy single-handedly brought me back to Notre Dame ...

Good Fridays w/Padre: Unexpectations

December 30, 2016 by Father Sorin

What an unexpected year! No one should have been surprised that 2016 followed 2015; but the manner in which it followed was surprising: Not so much as night follows day, but more as a troop of rabid baboons follows the tourist who went to relieve himself behind the bushes and missed the bus back to the safari lodge, all while having his pockets stuffed full of beef jerky and hard candies. The Fighting Irish 4-8: We began the 2016 season ranked tenth and widely expected to vie for a place in ...
