A Notre Dame Football Blog
In a time that is painstakingly slow in the Notre Dame and college football world, I was happy to see Twitter ablaze last week when Tim Brando suggested that Notre Dame was in talks to become a full-fledged member of the ACC. This led to Athletic Director, Jack Swarbrick, issuing a denial that no such talks had occurred. In a topic that has been discussed and debated forever, I think it is time to considering moving in that direction. The first time I recall this subject being seriously ...

As the dust settled on the 2017 spring game, my most immediate thought was it looks as if the Irish have avoided a major injury during the spring, which is always a good thing particularly for a team that is coming off a 4-8 season. I’ve learned over the years of watching or following the spring game that it does not pay to get too high or too low regarding what transpires in the spring. Last week, I listed several questions that I had going into the season. And while I suggested that we ...

Saturday will feature the final chance for most of us to see the Irish before the 2017 opener on September 2nd vs. Temple. Unless you live close to campus or you have viewed the practice clips that are available on the Internet Saturday is likely the only opportunity most fans will have to see the Irish this spring. For those of us that will not be on campus, NBCSN will carry the game at 12:30 p.m. ET. Spring always brings renewed optimism and the things we are hearing say all the right ...
As winter seems to be finally releasing its grip (at least in the East), we see the end of basketball season and an exciting run by the Irish hockey team to the Frozen Four. Though I like spring sports, my mind is starting to drift to Notre Dame football. It won’t be long before The Shirt arrives (let’s hope it is a better than last year), the Blue and Gold game, and before we know it, all eyes will turn to fall and a chance for the Irish to hopefully reverse a disastrous 2016 campaign. The ...

I want to start out by saying I’m not man of great wealth nor did I attend Notre Dame. However, I’m a life-long fan and, a few years ago, I had the opportunity to purchase season tickets to Notre Dame Football. This was a decision that was seemingly a no-brainer but was not without difficulty. As a Maryland resident, I cannot travel to all of the games. Plus, the opportunity to purchase tickets also required a significant (at least for me) donation to Notre Dame. Still, I was happy to ...

Last year I watched live the end of the Notre Dame basketball season as the Irish fell with a bid to the Final Four on the line in Philly at the hands of the North Carolina Tar Heels 88-74. Though the Irish played hard and were in the game until about midway through the second half, you sensed all along it was an uphill struggle. One did not get that feeling tonight though, as the Irish coughed up a second half lead and fell to Duke in the ACC Championship. Five years ago, I may have ...
With the Bowl games long finished and Irish Basketball locked in an ugly four game slide, it gave me time to go back and think about signing day. For me, signing day has always been a disappointment. Perhaps it began when the Irish signed Ron Powlus. Enormous and unreasonable expectations that were never fulfilled. I will always maintain, though, that Powlus had a good career at Notre Dame. The recruiting rankings have always bothered me. John Feinstein gave me some ammunition during a recent ...

Welcome to Debate THIS! In this episode of the long-standing HLS series, we will take a look at the graduate transfer rule. Stay tuned to HLS for the other side of this argument. I am going on record to say that I cannot stand the graduate transfer rule. Let me try to understand this and put myself in the shoes of a student-athlete. I graduated early (good job!), but I don’t play at School X. In that case, I’m going to go shopping for a new school. If School Y has a graduate program that ...
With the Irish at 16-2 and 5-0 in the ACC, the remainder of the NCAA basketball season looks as promising as the previous few under Mike Brey. I’ll admit as a kid, basketball always took a back seat to football in that the Irish football teams were typically better and I generally prefer football as a sport. As I got into my teen years, the gap widened as the Digger Phelps era gave way to John MacLeod. It might be said that Troy Murphy single-handedly brought me back to Notre Dame ...
I was happy to turn the page on the new year if nothing else than to turn the calendar on one of the worst years of Notre Dame football that I can remember. Starting on New Year’s Day of 2016 and throughout the season it was seemingly one bad moment after another. Now with the national title playing out tonight, our long Notre Dame nightmare can end. Or can it? Since the end of this season, there have numerous coaching changes. When the Irish tee it up on opening day next year, the ...
