January has been quite the month for post-college life for many former and current Notre Dame athletes. I am sure you all know that many of team 127 players are headed to the NFL draft, but what you might not know is that THERE ARE OTHER DRAFTS BESIDES FOOTBALL. Crazy concept, right!
Earlier this month the MLS draft took place and ND fared pretty well. Max Lachowecki went 25th overall to Real Salt Lake, followed close by Patrick Hodan at 28th overall to San Jose Earthquakes and Vince Cicciarelli went 3rd round and 60th over all to the Columbus Crew. Not only did the ND Men’s soccer team show up at the draft, but so did the women. Notre Dame women Cari Roccaro and Katie Naughton went 5th and 19th, respectively, in the National Women’s Soccer League draft.
In my opinion, the coolest draft that took place in January was the MLL draft (Major League Lacrosse) because the players drafted are currently still in college AND have the opportunity to play in their final seasons even if drafted. Matt Landis and Matt Kavanagh will both be going into the season knowing their future is in the MLL. (Pro tip: If you want your child to go pro in lacrosse, name them Matt).
I’m jealous of these folks who get to avoid the real world for a little bit longer. As for me, I’m just hoping the end of January brings me the luck of the internship draft.
