Sure, be happy that you are out of the NCAA doghouse; however, you can never erase the memories that this guy gave us:

Earlier this week, Spencer Hall detailed the best memories that Lane gave all of college football. However, simply stating that Lane lost to Tommy Rees just doesn’t sum up the joy that Kiffin gave Irish fans.

Allow me to fill in the blanks as we walk down memory lane…

November 27, 2010: Notre Dame 20 – Southern Cal 16

Yes, it does bear repeating that you lost to Tommy freakin’ Rees.
Remember, 2010 was a season in which ND lost to Tulsa and Navy in consecutive weeks and this was the first true road game after those disasters.
Rees was the only QB to throw any TDs in this game and he did it twice.
Rees also threw 3 INTs and had a fumble. USC had only one turnover all game. That’s a 4 to 1 advantage and you blew it, Lane.
Robert Hughes still gives Lane nightmares, doesn’t he?
Or maybe Harrison Smith picking off Mitch Mustain on the one yard line.

November 24, 2012: Notre Dame 22 – Southern Cal 13

Chin up, Trojans, at least you lost to an Everett Golson led Irish team.
It was, however, the first time Southern Cal dropped two straight home games to the Irish since 1992.
Southern Cal never led.
Theo Riddick ran for 146 yards and had 7.3 yards/carry. Nice defense.
Lane called a timeout that negated a TD.
Everything about the goal line stand. It starts with a penalty, Lane kept trying a fade that wasn’t going to work, tried a Bush Push, and then went for the TD on fourth down when Southern Cal needed two scores anyways:

October 19, 2013: Notre Dame 14 – Southern Cal 10

Lane were canned two weeks before this game
Still, he constructed this disaster and Orgeron couldn’t save it.
This was the first Irish win against Southern Cal at home since 2001.
The Trojan defense did manage to stop the Irish…when Tommy Rees went down with an injury
This was a loss to the dynamic duo of Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix. Be proud.

Irish Blogger Gathering: Requesting a Fly-By

So, I had the joy of being at work until 1am last night and I’m just now playing catch-up to get everything out. So instead of a well, thought out intro, you’re getting a bulleted list of highlights.

1) Let’s talk about the running game. Both George Atkinson III and Amir Carlisle have proven to be less than effective so far. Is it time to reduce their workload and give more carries to Cam McDaniel and/or Tarean Folston or should we stay the course?

Absolutely positively no-question yes. GAIII’s running style is too upright and he can be too indecisive behind the line unless the hole is big and obvious. Carlisle doesn’t have the elusiveness required in this offense for the running backs. I believe both would be better served in a role as slot receiver, but that’s not a gear you can switch into this late in the season, particularly with the talent already present at the WR ranks. I’d like to see a combination of McDaniel and Folston for the next two games, which should be easier, to prepare them for the last two games, which should be more difficult.

2) Did Hendrix’s performance against Air Force make you feel any better about him should he be called upon again to fill in for Rees?

Actually, it did. Andrew Hendrix was never going to set the world on fire at the QB position, but he certainly wasn’t as bad as his performance against SC showed. I believe Hendrix can run the offense competently, but needed some confidence for that to show. Hopefully he got that confidence on that 47-yard toss.

3) What adjustments, if any, would you like to see from the defense against Navy?

The thing that frustrated me in all the post-game defensive analysis was the decision not to crash down the defensive backs until later in the game. Meanwhile, Jaylon Smith was left out on an island trying to defend both the quarterback and the pitch man on the option plays wide, and we always seemed to be a defender short out there. Then the DB’s started playing a lot closer to the line, and voila, their running attack wasn’t nearly as effective. I realize Romine is a decent passer and ND was defending against that possibility, but I believe our DB’s are good enough to recover if they play run and it’s really a pass. The DB’s should be playing on the line from the get-go.

Friday Roundup: The “Running with the Devils” Edition

Let’s face it, when Notre Dame faces off against the Arizona State Sun Devils in their full hellfire attire, the Irish will be facing off against one of the best offenses that they will see in all of 2013.

As Bayou discussed yesterday, they have put on quite a show throughout most of their season. And I’m going to give the Sun Devils a load of credit here, they’ve looked pretty damn good doing it too for the most part.

And with Arizona State favored by 6 at the time of this writing, it’s safe to say that most people believe they are doing this with all the flair and skill of Van Halen.

But you know what, if you decided to strip away ASU’s offense, their Eddie Van Halen, and…well…you are left with much different results:

For Arizona State, their David Lee Roth is their defense. Against teams not named Sacramento State, they have done the following:

So that big ‘ol table is a fancy way of saying Arizona State’s defense is not very good, but then again, they face an Irish offense that has plenty of problems of their own.

Further, the Irish have to deal with the entire band and not just one piece of it. David Lee Roth was surrounded by crazy talent and the Sun Devils have loads of it in offense. The Irish defense will have to continue the progress that they made against Oklahoma for the Irish are to have any chance at running with these devils.

Or perhaps the new Hendrix experience that debuted at OU will be just the curveball the Irish need to create a dynamic running attack of their own, putting Turnover Tommy back to rest and allowing Reesus to rise again.

Either way, the Irish will need to put together their best complete game of the season or the next two weeks will definitely be a living hell.

Let the athletic director carousel begin! DeLoss Dodds has officially stepped down from Texas, making one of the most attractive AD jobs in the nation readily available. And that’s just the start of Texas’ three ring circus.

Of course this is announced after the entire thing is canned. EA Sports, who has been notorious for often making fans of the NCAA series of video games feel neglected in comparison to Madden, decided to unleash news of this crazy feature on the world now that NCAA ’15 will never happen.

The eye of Texas are upon you. But the refs eyes are apparently looking elsewhere.

The ‘Ol Ball Coach censors himself. He claims he was “too negative” on his own show and asked for it to be pulled, but that’s probably code for “too drunk”.

To be a jerk, or not to be a jerk. That is the question. Ole Miss football players were all to happy to answer enthusiastically.

Time for all the HaHa Clinton-Dix jokes. No reason for his suspension? Oh, wait, there is a reason.

Put These Games on Your Radar

#25 Maryland @ #8 Florida State, 12:00pm ET, ESPN/WatchESPN – Yes, somehow Maryland is ranked. I’m not sure how, but hey, here’s a top 25 matchup that no one really expected in the early games.

Kansas State @ #21 Oklahoma State, 3:30pm ET, ABC/ESPN3 – Another weak slate for the afternoon games as well. This isn’t so much of a matchup featuring a top-25 team, but a matchup featuring two Big XII teams that are both collectively sputtering enough that this game may just be interesting.

TCU @ #11 Oklahoma, 7:00pm ET, FOX – TCU may not have much in the win column, but there defense still manages to do enough to keep it close. As we saw last week, ND stayed in a game they had no business being in and if Oklahoma keeps that up and TCU finally figures it out on offense, we could have an upset.

#4 Ohio State @ #16 Northwestern, ABC – Ohio State doesn’t have many rough spots on their schedule until Michigan save for Northwestern this week and last week against Wisconsin. The Wildcats have yet to face off against a true tough opponent yet, so this will be their first real test of the season.

#15 Washington @ #5 Stanford, 10:30pm ET, ESPN/WatchESPN –It seems this season we’ve always had a solid night cap and this week is no different. I still put Stanford as a heavy favorite in this one, but I’m hoping the Huskies will make a solid run at it.

Rutgers @ #7 Louisville, Thursday, October 10, 7:30pm ET, ESPN/WatchESPN – Yep, I have a Thursday night game to keep an eye on before the next Roundup. Rutgers only loss game to a very solid Fresno State team and that game went to OT. This is likely one of Louisville’s only true tests in their weak schedule and I’m sure Rutgers will be looking for a little Thursday night upset special in this one.

Despite the jokes above, I don’t think Notre Dame will be able to keep up with ASU’s offense. I fear that we will be playing from behind most of the game and ASU’s weak rushing defense won’t even be a factor. My prediction is ASU 41 – ND 31.

HOWEVER, I don’t want to be a complete downer. My prediction will be wrong if the defense continues to improve and stymie the Sun Devil’s offense. If they can manage that and Tommy can limit his mistakes, this could be a completely different ball game.

Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

Despite a relatively tough schedule compared to those teams scheduling High School squads, I have ND running 5-0 into the home-game-that’s-not-at-home barnstormer at neutral site. Finally, ND has won the uniform battle. But unfortunately, I have to find a hiccup, unexpected loss in the season and I think this is it. ND will be coming off a high with a big, emotional win over OK at home. That game will be a battle, and we could come out a bit dinged up. And every team, at some point, gets caught flat. While ASU doesn’t have the most talent we’ll see, they have a pretty darn good coach and a legit QB in Taylor, and it’ll be a unique opponent for Notre Dame.

ND Drops one to go to 5-1, 24-21.

Just the 1. Obviously calling this out of nowhere.

I just have no idea. If I could make a “less than a leprechaun” .gif, I would. ASU’s hot right now and I question our ability to cool them off. That said, if our D gets off like they’ve been supposed to, the Sun Devils will have a tough time of it. They gave up 40+ to Stanford, and Stanford’s O is not electric. If we put in a run performance like we did last week and, say, maybe don’t give up a pick six on the second passing play, I think we have a great shot at a good win. My prediction is based on that, but like I said, I don’t know who’s getting off the plane. If it’s our passing O from last week and our run game from MSU and our D from Michigan, we could easily give up sixty. Regardless, you should have plenty of liquor on hand to watch on Saturday evening.

The run game will continue to improve, and we’ll see some more 2-QB rotation with Hendrix getting meaningful snaps.

34-24 ASU victory. The Irish start 0-for-October and sink to .500 which makes for a loooong bye week.

Irish Blogger Gathering: Spring Fling with NDNation

Yes, you read the title correctly: The Subway Domer has pulled a recruiting coup for the IBG and NDNation has joined the fold.

For the post Blue/Gold Game edition, we got the first crack at asking questions of Mike Coffey, aka El Kabong, of NDNation. He, in turn, has asked his questions three of Kieth Arnold of Inside the Irish who will eventually have Subway’s answers up. And you can find my answers over at The Subway Domer this week. Eventually, we will have the Strong and True blog back in the fold once they find someone to fill Josh Flynt’s shoes.

Without further ado, here are Mike’s answers to my questions:

1) Needless to say, the offense struggled mightily, especially in the red zone. Do you feel that this a sign of future offensive struggles or a chance to praise the Irish defense?

I believe it’s neither.

The Spring Game is a difficult thing to analyze. We ND football fans haven’t seen a meaningful snap in three in a half months (or more, depending on how you felt about the bowl game) and won’t see one for another four months. We’ve got a jones to see the players in action in a game-like atmosphere at the location we all associate with great games, and the Spring Game gives us that. Trouble is, given the familiarity the players have with each other’s abilities, the general knowledge of the plays being run, and the well-known tendency of coaching staffs in general (and this one in particular) to play things close to the vest in a non-competitive situation, it doesn’t give us much else.

No doubt the defense “showed” more than the offense during the scrimmage. Maybe they were more motivated. Maybe they took advantage of the temporarily poor OL depth or the larger number of dinged-up players on offense. Maybe Chuck Martin didn’t want to show off too much in a situation that didn’t matter. Maybe our defense is really really good and when our offense goes up against a less-talented group, it’ll be their time to shine. Maybe the the red-jersey rules limited Everett Golson in ways we won’t see when Temple comes to town.

In the words of Edward Nygma, too many questions. Guessing which (if any) of the possibilities are true is just that — guessing. We know we had a good defense last year, and nothing that happened Saturday showed us any different. We know the offense had its issues last year at times, and nothing that happened Saturday showed us any different. Unfortunately, until that first snap on August 31st, that’s what we’re left with, and I don’t want to color the perception of what happens at and after that snap with judgments based on guesses.

2) While I was at the game, I tried to focus on the battle in the trenches, especially considering the departure of Braxton Cave. What positions or battles were you mindful of and what did you take away from it?

Given the caveats of answer #1, I was interested in seeing a couple things.

The OL was low on bodies, so I went in expecting them to have problems. I thought they performed relatively well given the limitation, but certainly wasn’t wowed. I would have liked to see their ground game performance more, as that’s what I expect will drive the success or failure of the unit next season. I enjoy ND being able to redshirt freshmen offensive linemen to allow them to grow and get more seasoned, but it’s possible we won’t have that luxury this year.

Given the change in depth at the position, I was also interested in comparing Malik Zaire to his competitors, both physically and (to an extent) emotionally. I found him to be very refreshing in both aspects. I thought his passes had good power and accuracy, certainly moreso than Andrew Hendrix. He seemed to exhibit a reasonable confidence for a freshman. It remains to be seen if we’ll see him behind center at any point, and I’d expect Brian Kelly and the staff will do their utmost to preserve a redshirt year for him. Having said that, however, if Golson has the improvement we all expect, it’s not a given he’ll be behind center for a third year in a row, and perhaps some experience for Zaire will leave ND in a better position for 2014. If they don’t, Rees once again was his workman-like self, and while he has his limitations, I wouldn’t be prepared to throw the season away if the situation meant extended time for him at QB.

3) I’m always leery of trying to crown an MVP for a scrimmage, so lieu of that, I will ask this: Did any player catch your eye? It could’ve been a flash in one play, their overall performance, or even a gut feeling on their future potential.

As I noted above, Zaire’s performance made me interested in seeing what he’ll be able to do, especially on the ground to keep defenses honest. C.J. Prosise certainly is more than serviceable at a position of need. I liked George Atkinson, but if he doesn’t learn to keep those pads down, he’ll miss more time this year.

But I would say the guy who stood out for me was Chuck Martin. Even though he’s the OC for an offensive-minded coach, he’s putting his stamp on the game plan. He probably never will run the ball as much as I’d like, but he’s shown he respects the need for (at least a semblance of) balance. For a guy who spent most of his time on the defensive side of the ball prior to ND, that’s a great thing to see, and had Brian Kelly’s chat with the Eagles gone a different way, I’d be comfortable with Martin at the helm.

Know Thyself, Know Thy Enemy: Quarterback

As we wind down the “Know Thyself, Know Thy Enemy” series, we come to the most hotly debated position on the Irish: Quarterback. While I’ve been rather consistent in my stance of “anybody but Tommy”, I haven’t yet stated who I would start as the QB.

Kieth Arnold over at Inside the Irish got me thinking about this even earlier than I planned to when asked to rank the top 25 Irish players on the roster. As I did that exercise, I decided to rank everyone on where I think they are skill-wise right now and not estimate future potential. When I did that, I had all 3 QB ranked within a few spots of each other, but one managed to come out on top.

Height/Weight: 6’2″/220 lbs

I can already hear a few screams of “REALLY NOT GOLSON?!” in my head as I type this out. However, I just can’t give Golson the nod over Hendrix based off just a single spring game and a lot of hype.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe Golson is immensely talented and will find himself on the field this season. He will be an impact player and he will simply wow us on more than one occasion. However, he has still yet to see a single meaningful snap in a game.

Andrew Hendrix though, has. Although he is not without faults, his mistakes are correctable. The INTs that he had last season (and in the spring game) were the result of flat out misreading coverages and losing track of a linebacker. That is much easier to fix than consistently locking in on a single receiver and forcing a ball into triple coverage or having passes that are wildly inaccurate on a regular basis as we’ve seen Tommy do.

With great speed and a rocket arm, Hendrix has all the physical tools he needs to succeed. With a year under his belt, he will be much better prepared to lead the Irish in 2012 than any other QB on the roster. He fits Kelly’s system and is a true dual threat that will force the defense to honor both aspects of his game.

Golson’s time will come. 2012 is the year of the Hendrix experience.

Height/Weight: 6’2″/230 lbs

Unlike Notre Dame’s situation, finding the top opposing QB is a rather easy task. Just take a look at any pre-season Heisman list and you’ll find Matt Barkley’s name at the top and for good reason.

Barkley has thrown for over 9,000 yards, completed 64.3% of his passes, and thrown for 80 TDs with just 33 INTs. Even in his worst season as a freshman, Barkley had a 59.95% completion percentage, threw for over 2,700 yards and his TD to INT ratio was still above 1 at 15:14.

He’s really, really good at football.

~~However, he also holds the distinction of being the first Trojan QB to lose to the Irish since Carson Palmer in 2001. So at least we have that going for us?~~ [Edit: As mentioned below, I completely forgot that Barkley was hurt in the 2010 loss to the Irish]

Once again, the Irish will end the season facing a top quarterback from the Pac-12 that is likely going to be the first pick in the NFL draft. And with weapons like Woods surrounding Barkley, it’s no surprise that many have Southern Cal as their favorites for the national title.

NCAA Football 2013 – EA Sports Player Rankings Leaked

A special shout out to the guy that snuck a video camera into the E3 gaming convention and recorded himself going through the NCAA Football 2013 selection screens to get all of the team ratings and player ratings for the next version of the college football gaming dynasty.

He may have filmed the 16 most boring minutes on YouTube, but he gave us college football fans and gamers some golden offseason fodder to argue about. Starting with the overall team ratings, Notre Dame is given a 97 overall (WOWsers!), with a 94 offense rating, 95 defense rating and 6 star prestige. I would love to say I agree with this number…but it seems high to me. For context, 97 ties ND for the 6^th highest rating behind Wisconsin, Texas, LSU, Oregon and USC who each are rated 99 overall. Tied with the Irish at 97 overall are Florida State, Georgia, Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Michigan. Other Irish opponent ratings include: Navy (77), Purdue (87), Michigan State (93), Miami (91), Stanford (93), BYU (89), Pittsburgh (85), Boston College (85) and Wake Forest (81). Considering the real life talent differential between teams like USC and LSU compared to Boston College and Wake Forest, there certainly doesn’t seem to be much ratings disparity built into this year’s version of the game.

Grantland-X is going to appreciate the Notre Dame QB rankings, which are as follows:

With Rees having far more experience under his belt than any of the other 3 scholarship QB’s, we can’t be shocked that the guys over at EA Sports took the safe route and rated him slightly higher than Hendrix and Golson. Tommy’s speed rating is surprising, as I would have expected it to be in the mid-to-low 60s. The fact that Hendrix’s strength is a 53 and break tackle is a 67 is ludicrous – each should be much higher. I would probably lower the awareness rating for both Hendrix and Rees as well. Throwing power and throwing accuracy ratings are not yet available, but based on Tommy’s inferior athletic ratings coupled with the fact his overall rating is the highest, you would expect him to show the strongest numbers in those categories. Of course, whether or not you agree with those ratings is an entirely different story.

Moving on to the running backs:

I love speedy RBs when playing this game, and the Irish backfield stable does not disappoint. For those of you that plan on playing in Dynasty Mode, the Carlisle/Atkinson combination is going to be one of the strongest in the country when you enter your 3^rd season and they are each seniors. Here’s to hoping that the on the field product turns out similarly.

And now the entire EA Sports ND roster (note: their 70 man roster is mostly made up of current players and early enrollee freshmen. For the few freshmen enrolling in the fall that appeared on the roster, I generally didn’t try to guess who the game was referring to.)

***Update: Manti Te’o is tied with Matt Barkley and Montee Ball as the highest rated player in the game. Tyler Eifert is in a tie for 4th with Marcus Lattimore. The Irish coming in with two of the top 5 players in the game? Not too shabby….

– Ben Turk’s second half of 2011 must have really stuck with the developers.

– It’s always good to have 3 offensive linemen in your top 10.
