Tomorrow we play another famously faith-based, religiously-affiliated university. As a courtesy to those approaching this game, who might be unfamiliar with Catholicism, I will now provide a brief recitation of its most important aspects in a user-friendly question-and-answer catechism format. For students, reading this counts as part of your Theology requirement. For alumni and fans, this will provide a plenary indulgence (although contributions are still accepted).
Q. Who is God?
A. God is the Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things.
Q. Why did God make us?
A. God made us to know, love, and serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him forever in heaven.
Q. What must we do to save our souls?
A. To save our souls, we must worship God by faith, hope, and charity; we show faith by fervently believing in something, hope by trusting that it will come out for the best, and charity by loving with all our heart – so if you’re an Irish fan, you’re covered.
Q. What is God?
A. God is a spirit infinitely perfect.

A. God had no beginning; He always was and He always will be.

A. Grace is a supernatural gift of God bestowed on us, through the merits of Jesus Christ, for our salvation – like admission to Notre Dame.

A. The chief commandments of the Church are four:
– Cheer for Old Notre Dame.
– Wake up the echoes cheering her name.

A. A Sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.

A. Twelve. Seven at home, and five away.

Q. Are prayers said with distractions of any avail?
A. Only if the distractions are caused or endorsed by the Leprechaun Legion.
Q. Is it a mortal sin not to hear Mass on a Sunday or a holyday?
A. There are more chapels on campus than ashtrays – you have no excuse to miss Mass.
Q. How should we keep the holydays?
A. Purchase season tickets.

A. When you miss Dining Hall hours and all you have left in your room are old Grab-‘N-Go bags.
Q. What is abstinence?
A. Talking about food, no animal flesh. Talking about any other flesh, not between midnight and 9:00 in the morning.

A. Just ‘cuz.
Q. Why does the Church command us to abstain from flesh-meat on Fridays?
A. Because the Dining Hall has to unload that Cod-in-Salsa somehow.

Q. Is it sinful to consult mediums, spiritists, fortune tellers and the like when we do not believe in them, but through mere curiosity to hear what they may say?
A. Not when they only come to campus once every seven years.

A. Every human being capable of salvation of every age, country, race, or condition, especially if he needs our help, is our neighbor. So we’re talking about the fans of the opposing team.
