He grew up a Notre Dame fan his entire life. Naturally, he was committed to Michigan.
This quarterback didn’t even get a phone call from the Irish. Worse, his teammate and favorite receiver was getting the attention and the offer that he desired. Thankfully, that teammate’s father figured Notre Dame was missing out on something and suggested to the head coach that Notre Dame should take a look at this quarterback.
When all was said and done, Brady Quinn decommitted from Michigan and signed with Notre Dame.
Quinn’s story is one of my favorite recruiting stories. Not only is it a story of the Skunkbears getting spurned, but of the recruiting ineptitude of Ty Willingham. It’s also a great example of just how crazy recruiting can be. Not matter what one of these kids says, no matter how strong the commitment, there may just be another offer that makes them change their mind in an instant.
For Quinn, it was getting the offer of his dreams.
It’s been funny to read some reactions around ND fandom the past couple of days over some recruiting news that I can’t get specific about (thank you, ridiculous NCAA booster rules). It appears that the shoe might just be on the other foot. There’s so much needless anger, hair-pulling, and reading far too much into a situation that happens all the time in college football.
How soon do we all forget when it worked out in our favor.
The Roundup
I bring Brady Quinn up for another reason. He might just be dead to me after this slur against the great state of Texas.
Let’s continue the theme of Notre Dame quarterbacks. Jimmy Clausen is back in the NFL.
It’s not every day you watch a player hop around rivals. But Ty Issac is starting the rounds.
Yes, someone does actually consider Purdue a hated rival. Thankfully so, because after Purdue had the most ridiculous idea ever for a helmet, this parody was well deserved.
Another day, another Georgia player dismissed. The biggest shock of the story was that Tray Matthews was actually in class.
Bo Pelini has a solution to all the recruiting craziness: Kill signing day.
And now your moment of Nix… I stumbled upon this thread on Reddit the other day. And this by far was the biggest highlight.
The Booze
Heading back to beer and picking one of my favorite seasonals: Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy.
