Reminder: HLS 3.0 Is Coming

August 8, 2012 by Ryan Ritter

As announced in last week’s Roundup, the process to bring HLS 3.0 live will start this Friday, August 10. Much like maintenance times before, we will throw the site into maintenance mode while the make the needed changes behind the scenes.

Unlike previous maintenance windows, this one will last for the entire weekend. There is a long list of tasks and tests to make sure everything works properly and this window will definitely reflect that.

We will be back and open for business on Monday, August 13 in all of our 3.0 glory. I cannot wait to show off the fruits of our labor (and to actually get some sleep) soon!

In relation to this new website, I have a few questions:

    1) Will the new website have FieldTurf and a Jumbotron? If so, how do you plan on avoiding the desecration of Her Loyal Sons’ traditions?

    2) Will there be marching band music, or will you pump up the viewers by blasting “Crazy Train” everytime someone enters a comment?

    3) Will there be pancakes? And if so, what types and syrups will be provided?

    4) Will the background have tradition color schemes, or can we expect 74 different combinations of colors, including gun-metal black and chrome?

    5) Similar to whenever a football team gets a new defensive coordinator, will the new HLS promise to be “more aggressive” by blitzing us with posts and coverage?

    6) Will the new HLS throw the ball to the TE? And can we expect the new HLS to run the option and incorporate fullbacks into the offense?

    7) Does the new HLS plan on joining a conference, like 247 sports or SBNation?

    8) Will the new HLS wear cut-off jerseys that will show off their bellies?

    9) Will there be explosions?

    10) Will the new HLS constantly, and steadfastly “sshhhhhh” me at all possible moments of excitement during a game, and request that I sit down, in order to promptly and efficiently kill off all frivolity or chances of a home field advantage?

      1) We hope to have a change in playing surface. This old interface comes up with too many 404 holes and incomplete content. As far as tradition, I can assure you it is of our utmost concern…seriously, Biscuit would murder me in my sleep if I banned dancing leprechauns.

      2) As much as we love the band, they apparently have better things to do like still run their band camps, select drum majors, have Irish Guard tryouts, practices, and showing up to games all season. Despite the new tunes in the stadium, they still feel like they have a job to do–go figure.

We then considered piping in their music, but then we got a stack of legal documents I didn’t understand. However, music is key to a pumped-up, engaged reader-base, so we are investigating other avenues.

      3) HLS is protesting certain breakfast foods after SDH apparently killed the tradition of having waffle irons with traditional ND logos like the Monogram or the leprechaun. This wouldn’t have happened if the administration really cared, so we refuse to give things like waffles our support any longer. Pancakes hit too close to home here, they’re out too.

      Bacon, however, is in.

      4) One word: Camo.

      5) How does one blitz and provide additional coverage? If HLS provides full blitzing schemes, we would then be stuck in zero coverage which doesn’t seem ideal. But then again, if we drop back into full coverage we aren’t being aggressive enough. Son of a bitch, my head hurts–what was the question again?

      6) Our passing game is a mess. Grantland-X won’t ever shut the hell up in meetings about Tommy Rees and continuously trying to show us game footage of Turnover Tommy. Then Bayou comes in drunk off Bourbon Street screaming some obscenities about the SEC and Les Miles. Twibby starts to wonder why he ever signed up for this. Biscuit is always showing up three hours late. All the while Fr. Sorin is continuously throwing holy water all over my electronics and performing exorcisms because I graduated from a Jesuit high school and I “brought the evil with me” to Notre Dame.

      I give up…

      7) No. We are and forever will be independent (unless someone like Time Warner decides to burn more money. Seriously, if Bleacher Report can get nine-figures, we are worth at least seven).

      8) Padre insists that we stick to his strict rules on fashion.

      9) Have you seen my Twitter feed during a football game? Let’s put it this way, the past few years better not repeat themselves or Michael Bay will be in awe of the results.

      10) No. Point us in the direction of said usher and we’ll handle it.

Perfect timing guys! Saturday is the annual St. Joe’s Orphanage picnic in Louisville. This means I’ll be too sloshed/hungover to read and post comments till Monday anyways. It’s a win win!

This Saturday is the my local ND Club’s kickoff event. So I will be busy, but a lot less drunk. There could be an outside chance the a work issue may come up too as we are working on a new software release.

Related: I picked the worst possible time to launch HLS 3.0.

Tex, talk about your experience with CSS

It could’ve been a lot worse, but thankfully Flannerite is quite skilled in the area and made things a lot easier. The “breakthroughs” I had in CSS were laughable.
