Genac this Pitt!
Why should we want to kill Pitt?
Well, here’s your Top 5 Reasons.
5. Pitt students/fans think they matter. But in a city with the Steelers, Pitt is just a sorry afterthought. It’s sad, but true. We should remind them of this. To do so, we need to BEAT PITT.
4. Pitt students think they’re the ‘smart ones’ because they look at all the masses going to Penn State and consider PSU beneath them. They conveniently ignore Carnegie Mellon around the corner. For the smart kids in the ‘Burgh, BEAT PITT.
3. Jonathan Baldwin talks trash on Darrin Walls. This from a guy that is underperforming so freaking much this year it’s ridiculous. So, BEAT PITT.
2. Pitt has given the Irish fits recently (taking 3 of the last 4 meetings). And they somehow claim to be a rival. Like everyone. And that’s annoying, so we must BEAT PITT.
1. Genac This! Genac is a key term in their fight song. They derived this from the Allegheny River somehow, and made up this word. It means nothing, and while I love yelling Genac This when Pitt time rolls around, it’s absurd. So GENAC PITT!
And…This ‘Stache is just brutal. What is this, 1970? We must trim the Stache! WE MUST BEAT PITT!

As a Pittsburgh native who voluntarily came right back after ND, I think you are way off on #5 and #4. I know any number of Pitt grads, and two Pitt professors live on my street. None of these people think that Pitt “matters” nationally or that it is academically superior to Penn State. They are certainly trying to make it a better school – and they’ve made a ton of progress, to the point where it’s now a much-better-than-average state school – but they have more than a bit of an inferiority complex.
As such, points #5 and #4 strike me as kind of mean. It’s one thing to mock BC, which is inferior but acts arrogantly to pretend that it isn’t. It’s another thing entirely to mock Pitt, which is all too aware of its weak points.
As for Genac, I love yelling it too. From the great Pittsburgh Irish band Ceann (famous for “Pittsburgh Makes Me Drunk” among other greats), I ask you:
Alleghenee-genac-genac
Yinz wanna beer n’at?
Yina wanna beer n’at?
There’s Arn at this bar.
I am originally from the Burgh, born and raised. My experience is much different than yours (and unless we do a representative quantitative study, that’s the case for everyone). And besides, we play these guys this week. I’ll be nice afterwards.
So you knew Pitt fans who thought that Pitt sports mattered nationally and regionally, and you knew Pitt students and alums who thought that Pitt was a top-shelf academic institution that outclassed Penn State?
If so, I feel sorry for those delusional people. As Clint Eastwood once said, a man’s got to know his limitations. The Pitt people that I know, do.
Certainly that Pitt sports mattered regionally at least. Varied by person on nationally. Course, it all varied.
I didn’t get a lot of outright snobbery about their academic superiority on a national level, but I did get a lot of ‘penn state is a big terrible state school, which is why I chose Pitt’. Personally, I think both suck all-around. But that’s just bc I am an ND blogger.
