Just a quick note to all those ‘fans’ out there that are saying stuff like “if we lose Saturday, Charlie should be fired immediately” or something to that effect.
First – you’re morons.
Second, let me tell you why Charlie won’t be fired, and why he shouldn’t (barring another 3-9 debacle).
Why he won’t be fired:
- The Contract – it’s just so freaking expensive to get rid of Charlie, it’d have to be serious doomsday to make it happen. a loss to Michigan (sucks!) isn’t doomsday. it’s 1-1. (though I think we’re gonna win, I have to make the point)
- Goodwill – You know that gap between Coke’s assets and its market cap? Yep, good will. Charlie has a ton of it after 2 back-to-back BCS appearances in 2 years. He has only had 1 bad season and 1 mediocre game (that ND WON by the way!), so quit yapping your traps.
- Recruiting (ties in to good will) – Last year ND pulled in the #1 class in the nation. #1 people!!!! That’s absurd, especially after last year’s record. Talent is the most important factor in fielding a winning program, and we’re finally beginning to stockpile it. It’s only 2 classes deep so far, but after this year’s class is complete, we’ll be deep and talented for the first time since CW took over. And, continuity in coaching is huge to keeping recruits coming in. Kids want to know their coach will be there for 4 years with them. Charlie plans to stay, and his contract backs him up on this. This is more important in recruiting than you can imagine.
- A Plan and a Work Ethic – The reasons CW is still considered firm in his job, where TY would’ve been fired already: 1) Charlie has a plan. I guarantee you that C-dub has sat down with the powers that be and outlined how he plans to bring this program back to the top. From recruiting to game planning to marketing to playcalling to blah blah blah. Guarantee it. 2) This guy WORKS. Non-stop, incredibly hard. And not on his short game.
- The Leaders are NOT Morons – As much as I disagree with some things ND leadership does, I think they get it here. All of you over-reactionary pansies calling for a coach’s head 1 game into a season will NEVER be in a leadership position, and this is why. The head office at ND and the Board understand that this stuff takes time. If you tools that are calling for CW’s head if we lose to Michigan had it your way, we’d hire a new coach every 2 years, deem him savior, and then can him when he doesn’t IMMEDIATELY give us a MNC. “Give us a championship now or your out” is your mantra. Idiots! At some point, other coaches look at that and say ‘why would I switch jobs and change my life for 2 years and a firing when I don’t bring in a championship right away’ and you end up with a dead-end job that nobody wants. Guess where that gets you? Back where you started – slim pickings for coaches and a floundering program. Do I want this year to be like last year? HELL NO. But, I also understand that this stuff takes time. You don’t go from 3-9 to magic in one off-season. Or from Week 1 to Week 2. We’re re-building an ENTIRE PROGRAM from the ground up after almost 8 years of mis-management by the previous 2 coaching regimes. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN OVER NIGHT.
Why CW Won’t Get Fired:
- All of the above and…
- We’re gonna win
So can we all please NOT be like Walter…

And quit waving the *$&(ing gun around and just be calm for a bit on this over-reactionary and thoughtless ‘fire Charlie’ COMPLETE BS?
Just be calm. It’s not going to happen, and it shouldn’t.
Calmer than you.

Agree, as often, 100%. Thanks for putting it all in perspective for us once again, Biscuit. BTW, where exacltly are a large group of people calling for blood? I havent seen it.
Agreed, the god damn plane has not crashed into the mountain dude.
You forgot one important factor: WHO ARE WE GOING TO HIRE IF WE FIRE WEIS? First, there are no viable alternatives (please don’t say skip holtz) and second, who would want a job where the last two people in your position were crucified?
Trey, Biscuit lives in Southern Cal. Everyone there is whispering horrible things in his ear when he sleeps.
Spend a little time talking to folks that are 1 of the following: 1) ND Fans that aren’t educated on ND football (~75% of fans) or 2) Anyone on an ND message board that thinks they’re educated, but is, in fact, an idiot. I’ve seen/heard plenty of it just since last Saturday. And this early in the season, ONE mention is plenty. But it’s been more than that.
Thank God! Some sanity. I can not believe the venomous attacks on a coach after a win. Yes it was not pretty, but it was a step forward-the first of many. Building any program takes time. I think we will win on Saturday, but if not we are not going to fire the coach for the above reasons.
Biscuit, good job on this one. Only point of disagreement is trusting that the admin. “get’s it”. This is the same admin that allowed the previous ten years of neglect. I do however, credit them with the foresight to remove Ty. Another two years may have been close to irreversible. I think the admin. is beginning to get it.
JNND, glad you agree (meaning you’re sane). But, it’s not the same admin that allowed 10 years of neglect. Monk is gone, Swarbrick is in, Affleck-Graves is 2nd in command. It’s a pretty different group, although the Board isn’t drastically different…so it’s some same, some very different. Monk being out, to me, is the biggest/best change. Great man, poor leader from a football perspective.
The Biscuit is correct we are dealing with 8 years of mediocre recruiting prior to CW. CW is in it for the long haul and is working his touche off.
ND is building depth and after this recruiting class statements will be made about ND reloading not rebuilding.
If we go 7-5 or 8-4 with a bowl win you will see ND back in the top 20 ranking beginning next season.
There is no reason not to believe we won’t have consistant top 10 recruiting classes while CW is here.
Shortcutted my response a bit Biscuit. Those you mentioned above are different. What I see now is more influence by the board than previously. Before it was left in the hands of Monk. That is why I say they did not get it previously. The board influence is what I believe caused White’s exodus. Swarbrick mentions collaboration with the board. Biscuit, my perception is a migration to more involvement and why I think they are beginning to get it-they need to be more involved with oversight. The program should be more collaborative.
Couldn’t agree with you more, Biscuit. It may not be flashy or exciting being the tortoise, but the finish line gets closer every week.
AMEN Biscuit. Well said. The oust Charlie idiots are still a small minority, but they can be loud at times on the message boards. I just hope that the team goes on a roll starting Saturday so that these clowns will shut their pieholes.
