Okay, so I’m not actually saying this is the case. I’m just showing you all how Brian Hamilton’s (and many others’)  hack “journalism” can result in wrong/unfair articles written across the net.
Â
Today, I came across this story, where former UM player Rondell Biggs was busted for steroid possession.Â
Rondell Biggs, 24, was stopped by state troopers Jan. 24 on I-94 near State Street for illegally tinted windows on his vehicle. Biggs was arrested for driving on a suspended license, and troopers searched his car prior to impounding it.
Trooper Craig Ziecina said in a press release that he found 10 yellow pills in the center console of the vehicle in a bag that had a label indicating it contained 50 pills. Biggs told Ziecina they were “post-workout pills” and said he was in Michigan assisting with the training and conditioning of the U-M football team.
The pills later tested positive for stanozolol, a Schedule III prescribed synthetic anabolic steroid. It is commonly used by athletes and bodybuilders to lose fat while retaining lean body mass.
Bold is mine. Point is, if anyone cared (and they probably don’t – but for some reason they care about Jimmy Clausen maybe drinking beer maybe more than ‘roids on college campuses), this article could be written up in several ways that would lead to the headline up top. Did this happen? I have zero idea. Does Biggs have anything to do with the current team in any way? I don’t know. But it’s possible that this happened, and web “journalism” like Hamilton’s leads to situations where we go from ‘possible’ to ‘happened’ awfully quickly. For example…
The next story from The Ann Arbor Suth News could’ve started with something like this:
Ex-University of Michigan player and current trainer Rondell Biggs busted for steroids.
Which then could become the following on Skunkbear Nation:
University of Michigan part-time trainer may have given steroids to Michigan players
And then another news outlet, The Sucks Post, pops in with:
UM Trainer Barwis Hires Doping Ex-Player to Train Michigan Players
And on and on and on until it’s virtually certain that this guy provided drugs to UM players. Or that JC is being investigated by Notre Dame for alcohol incidents (which isn’t happening at all, yet is somehow in papers/web sites across the nation).
Am I randomly piling on Michigan? Yeah, sort of. If I’m going to make an example of a team, I will bag on UM. (fun!) But more importantly, the message is about the way that “news” is handled today on the web by “news” organizations. And while I expect random speculation and assertions without fact from any number of blogs (and not the good ones),  I don’t expect that from traditionally respected news orgs like the Chicago Tribune.  If they were to try to dig into this story, I’d expect them to interview the cops, get quotes from players, do some INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM, and not just post the headline up top on the web randomly without the right caveats and details necessary to actually make it accurate.
So the real story is this: Ex-UM player is in Ann Arbor and has steroids. He SAYS he’s helping train current players.
But Hamilton/hacks of the world would’ve written: Ex-UM player may have provided steroids to UM players.
The first is accurate, the second is sensationalistic and inaccurate. The word “may” is evil in reporting in this context, and these guys love it.
NOTE: This is my last rant on the topic. I’m getting back to football as my ability to deal with professional journalism issues is gone.Â

Yeah, I’m done with this topic as well. Unless of course ND admins do something dumb. I’m saving some extra special wrath for Hamilton just in case.
