Teams are always looking for ways to up their home-field advantage. Iowa paints their visitors’ locker room pink. Notre Dame installed a comical tunnel for visiting teams to use. So when Ed Orgeron said that Texas cut off the air conditioning to the visitors’ locker room, it sounded plausible even if it bordered on the bush-league absurd (even moreso than Weis’ tactic of letting the grass in ND Stadium grow to absurd lengths).

Coach O didn’t stop there though. He said Texas pulled the same stunt on Louisiana Tech. In fact, he called them to scout the conditions and brought extra blower fans to combat the under-handed tactic.

Problem is that Skip Holtz, head coach of Louisiana Tech, said that Coach O never called him and he had no recollection that Texas attempted to stoop so low.

Louisiana Tech head coach Skip Holtz weighs in on whether Texas had AC in visitor locker room: “I do not know the answer. I wasn’t the one who talked to anybody in Baton Rouge. I don’t remember it being like a sauna, and I don’t remember it being cool.”
— The Morning Drive (@MorningDrive977) September 10, 2019

Texas of course denied all the allegations and athletic director, Chris Del Conte, launched–and I can’t believe I’m about to write this–an internal investigation on their HVAC functionality. The report came back stating the A/C was working just fine and–I also can’t believe I’m about to write this–those records were FOIA’d:

This is a fantastic spreadsheet, too. I mean, we got airflow info. Lots of lines, charts, gobs of data. pic.twitter.com/jmJgrKvrIN
— Brian Davis (@BDavisAAS) September 12, 2019

But don’t worry, y’all, we can get dumber. Because our Austin correspondent and fellow degenerate game picker, NDEddieMac, received third-party confirmation from…*checks notes*…a BBQ vendor:

The BBQ joint has weighed in on the UT AC controversy and I have all the info I need now pic.twitter.com/W4ZAn5cQ95
— NDEddieMac (@NDEddieMac) September 12, 2019

Friendly reminder, LSU won this game.

For some reason though, Coach O decided to go down this fabricated rabbit hole. Why? I honestly have no clue. It was originally triggered by questions about his players cramping on the field, which, you know happens in upper-90-degree Texas heat. He didn’t even have to mention this insanity at all.

But nope, here we are, complete with spreadsheets and BBQ joints calling bullshit.

Never change, college football. Ever.

The Roundup

Note: Some links are from The Athletic and require a subscription to read. These are denoted with ($). If you are considering a subscription, please use our discount!

Friendly reminder if you are looking for ND/SC tickets: HLS is doing a charity silent auction for a pair. Details are here.

Winning is hard, but losing is harder. And losing so badly that it’s clear the season is done after just a couple of weeks? That’s a whole other level ($).

California passed a bill that would allow players to profit of their image and likeness. So, naturally, the NCAA responded to this first domino of the Olympic model falling by calling the thing unconstitutional and threatening to kick all California schools out of the NCAA. Makes sense.

Tennessee finally got a win. In response to the news that a Florida boy found himself bullied because he made his own Tennessee shirt since he had none, Tennessee not only sent him a care package of swag, but are now selling the very shirt the boy designed to benefit anti-bullying groups. They are selling like hotcakes with over 16,000 sold as of Tuesday.

Mark Richt has lost control of giving a single, solitary fuck:

Life doesn’t get much better than this! Just think I could be grading film right now!! pic.twitter.com/6s5V6JMYJE
— Mark Richt (@MarkRicht) September 9, 2019

Want to read a story entirely about an epic punting performance? You know you do ($).

RIP, T. Boone Pickens. While many know him for his contributions to Oklahoma State, it’s well worth reading more about one hell of a full life that includes him going to the grave with a promise that 90% of his wealth will go to charity.

Opponent Watch

Regardless if he’s on the sidelines or not, this weekend is about Bob Davie. While his tenure at Notre Dame absolutely went south, the coaching staff that he had here was nothing short of incredible ($) and all the more maddening that it never worked. While I’m happy to hear he’s recovering from his undisclosed health issues, it is worth bringing up his rather rocky legacy that includes unceremoniously firing Joe Moore and orchestrating a spying operation.

And always remember, now and forever, the hot dog machine incident.

One of the things that I’ve enjoyed the most in the past couple of years here at HLS has been our focus on our crazy little community. Case in point: @frsorinramblers whom you will find on Twitter, our Discord, and our Twitch Channel.

During our Hot Dog Bye Week podcast, this Loyal Reader revealed that he would spend his bye week Ubering around Ann Arbor during Army/Michigan weekend. Here’s his playlist:

For those keeping score at home, that’s Army’s Fight Song, The Irish Tenors, “Here Come the Irish”, and the Rudy soundtrack. There’s trolling Michigan and then there’s this next-level, real-man-of-genius moment.

I can only imagine the stream of reactions from Michigan fans as they climb into his car and slowly realize the personal hell they have entered. May his Uber rating rest in peace.

As someone who steers this entire site straight into not just the silliness of college football, but also the pettiness and trolling opportunities it offers, I respect the hell out of this effort. Further, I hope his final Uber ride is given to a group of Army fans still buzzing over an upset over the damned Skunkbears.

The Roundup

The misery index is always a fun read, but typically you don’t see “how is this school a festering corpse?!” in week 2, but I guess Tennessee was just willing to jump on that grenade.

Another fun weekly read is the “top whatever” column. However, I think we can keep the absurdity of Hugh Freeze coaching from a hospital bed at #1 forever. It’s all downhill from here–UPDATE: maybe this dumb ride will keep going.

The silly season of the coaching carousel is always a wild ride. But Tom Herman/Coach O saga a couple of years ago at LSU was a damn rollercoaster.

Ian Book is a unicorn. Maybe not the thing you expected to hear from anyone after his performance against Louisville, but he’s a part of a ever-shrinking percentage of college QBs that actually bide their time before they win the starting job.

Notre Dame did take a hit in one poll. Anxiously awaiting a certain subset of fans that trash #sportsmath to now point to the SP+ as the one true poll that actually reflected ND on the eye test.

Bill C had some other non-stat stuff that you should read. This piece is basically a national primer to some of the biggest storylines for various teams around college football and how week 1 affected them.

I think I have a Beaver correspondent now. Had another line dropped about Oregon State’s next game against Hawaii. It will be aired on Facebook Live; however, no one is quite sure exactly where on Facebook it will be. Regardless, my bet is the answer is “in more homes than the Pac 12 network.”

Offer this kid a scholarship immediately. The all-name champion is here and I don’t know how you top this.

Get me back in school. Notre Dame is offering a course discussing The Good Place. Can I take this online? Please?!

#snacktalk has reached epic proportions. Little did I realize our silly podcast would set off a seismic event of a Rudy parody done by KFC, featuring both actual Rudy (meh) and Sean Astin (YAY!). Not only does this fever dream exist, IT’S AMAZING.

Opponent Watch

Number of former ND coaches to roam the opposing sideline: still zero.

The following is a statement from @UNMLoboFB coach Bob Davie. #GoLobos pic.twitter.com/rDgcQQ5YyP
— New Mexico Lobos (@UNMLOBOS) September 5, 2019

If you’ve ever wondered how Southern Cal has ended up in their current state, you should absolutely read this fascinating piece about the booster that is likely responsible.

Quite a lot has changed since then. The show went from the radio to a podcast. From solo babbling to having guest pickers and then a permanent co-host. From staying clean to cursing like sailors.

It seems fitting, to me at least, that this episode ended up being a complete episode of randomness. This college football/Notre Dame podcast ended up being invaded with video games and baseball talk. For me, the Friday Roundup was always a medium for randomness and this episode absolutely hit that bullseye.

The video game invasion occurred due to my rather last minute decision to take part in Extra Life tomorrow starting at 8am CT. I have a more detailed explanation in the podcast, but the tl;dr is that I am doing this in memory of Aven. You may remember that two years ago, I asked for help in raising money for him and his family and y’all came through big. He may have lost his battle, but I will be Gamin’ for Aven and hope to raise $1,000 for the Children’s Hospital Network of Oklahoma in his memory. So make sure to stop on by during your football Saturday and toss in a couple of bucks for the children.

The Roundup

Time for a few links that were discussed in the recap earlier this week. I got lazy and forgot to link them in the post (oops). Here are the stories about Jalen Hurd bolting Tennessee and Jimbo Fisher ranting on refs.

I would really love to stop talking about Baylor. But the new details that come out are simply too hard to ignore and serve as a reminder as to why Baylor basically needed to burn the whole thing to the ground.

Tom Arnold: college football insider. Y’all he has the super inside information that Nick Saban was just this close to taking the New York Giants job. It totally doesn’t read like a generic forum post. Nope, not at all. Totally believable.

Things aren’t looking so good for Bobby. Diaco had to demote his offensive coordinator as things are not going well over at UCONN. Look, I’m not saying that he’s going to get fired and that he should come back home to his old job, but I am saying that there is a job opening in the Midwest for a football team looking to take a 3-4 scheme and make their defense great again. Maybe Tom Arnold knows more about this. We shall see.

This is how baseball talk invaded the show. Auburn fans rolled Toomer’s corner in celebration of the Cubs winning the World Series. Holy shit, that’s a thing I just typed and it isn’t April 1.

I never want a beat reporter’s job. As 18 Stripes explores, live tweeting pressers can leave out quite a bit of detail, leaving loads of room for all kinds of hot take interpretation.

Some are so complete, the commercials are included. Others just include one moment – a Penn State kicker making a game-winning field goal, a Pittsburgh quarterback dropping a profanity on broadcast television or a 280-pound BYU punter successfully executing a fake. There’s games that will look awesome on your high definition television (trigger warning) and others that are lacking sound.

If there was multiple videos for the same game, I tried to choose the best. There’s three weeks worth of content here. (I haven’t watched it all.)

Subscribe to the playlist for all the latest updates and tell your friends. This took me hours, and I’m ridiculously proud of it.If

** As far as I know. If I’m missing a game, let me know in the comments section and I’ll be sure to add it.

Well, Cam McDaniel has become quite the internet sensation this week. I feel though we are only focusing on one aspect of Cam McDaniel right now. There is clearly so much more that this Texas native delivers.

Back when we detailed Cam’s amazing run through a backwards gauntlet, one loyal reader had the ingenious idea of nicknaming Cam “run cmd”. Being a computer nerd myself, I’ve run with this. With that in mind, let’s take a journey through some of Cam’s greatest hits this season via run cmd commands.

run cmd -backwardsguanlet -destroyitanyways

Via

run cmd -nohelmetneeded -noonemakesmebleedmyownblood

rud cmd -texaspower -stiffarm -bulldoze

run cmd -juke -pickupyourjock

And of course….

The Roundup

This Cam thing really has hit critical mass. I’ll just let Cam explain:

https://twitter.com/cammcdaniel4/status/393600745062166528

Our ranking blind poll is complete. We left Notre Dame unranked and put Arizona State on the top of the pile. Good work, everyone!

I’m agreeing with Saban, I think I might be sick. I can’t fault him for his opinion on his fans, at all.

Speaking of ‘Bama fans, at least they didn’t poison a tree this time. Defacing a rock is a step in the right direction Bammers, good for you!

GSR numbers are out. I’m pretty sure you can guess who won this battle, again.

If you haven’t made yourself aware of the Grambling State situation, you should. Their initial protest is now over, but the entire situation is bringing Louisiana education budget cuts to light. Oh, and the opponent they cancelled on this past weekend is suing them. Definitely one of the crazier stories of the season.

And now, your moment of zen…THE PUPPETS HAVE JOINED FORCES WITH EVERY DAY SHOULD BE SATURDAY!!!

Put These Games on Your Radar

Last week was a little bit rougher on me as I went 2-3 against on the games I picked, but it brings me to a two week total of 8-5, which I will happily take. Let’s see how this week goes — we got quite a full slate of great games.

Picks are in bold as usual or, if you are using Firefox which has a fun bug apparently, my picks have the spread listed next to the team name.

[table “” not found /]

Predictions

Biscuit predicted 13-10…months ago. Coming that close, months in advance deserves a bonus half-point to take the lead in this little competition. Let’s see how we do this week.

[table “” not found /]

NDtex (@HLS_NDTex)

So here’s what I’m expecting: ND comes out with a solid start against a vastly inferior team, Hendrix comes in and the offense sputters to end the game. It’ll be a comfortable win, but we will all likely wish it had been by more.

ND 38, Air Force 6

Biscuit (@HLS_Biscuit)

Via:

The lesser of the 2 academies we often play is always a challenge with the Triple Option, and they keep it interesting with special twists and gimmicks week to week. Smaller, but really good at what they do, Air Force racks up serious yardage with Option play, but can’t match up physically. It’ll be a bit of an adjustment for Notre Dame’s stellar defense, and I could see a decent game til half time, but Notre Dame will push through it and pull away in the 2nd half. Air Force just can’t keep up with the size, speed and depth of Notre Dame.

ND wins 37 – 17

3 Leprechauns for the pilots. (And thanks so much for your amazing service to the US of A)

Bayou Irish (@HLS_BayouIrish)

I have a running deal with the bar where we do gamewatches. If we hang sixty points on a team, I buy the bar a round of strawberry shortcake shots (don’t ask). We almost scored sixty in 2011, with T Rees under center. I still bought the round. I think I’m buying this Saturday.

Even though it’s a service academy and God and Country and Notre Dame and all that, I think BK knows we need a blowout, gaudy win to go with our two losses and drag us into the Top 25. Tommy played well against USC until he got hurt, and I don’t think you’ll see him come out until late and only in order to give Hendrix some (as we know now badly needed) game experience and maybe let him finally score a rushing TD against Air Force without tripping.

Daniels, TJ and Hercules will be too much for the Falcons. Diac knows that he got his one “pass” after Navy 2010, so he’s going to be keyed in to this one and so will Jaylon Smith, who is quietly (or not) turning into a beast. He may finish with 15 tackles. Jaylon. Not Bob.

ND 63, Falcons 10.

Twibby (@HLS_Twibby)

After a couple games that went down to the wire, Saturday will offer Irish fans (that get CBS Sports Net) a chance to relax and enjoy a contest that will be in hand early.

Irish 45, Falcons 14

Irish Elvis (@IrishElvis)

1st Quarter: Start Fast
If I predict TDs on the first 3 ND possessions, it’s bound to happen one of these weeks, right?

2nd Quarter: Attention to Detail
Cam McDaniel works on not fumbling and maintaining the “Blue Steel” look while running. ND up comfortably 24-6 at halftime.

3rd Quarter: Effort & Enthusiasm
Hopefully the second team plays better this week than they did last week. Egads, injuries!

4th Quarter: Finish Strong
Here’s hoping for a comfortable victory that’s not as close as the final indicates. ND wins 34-20.

The Irish Twins (@HLS_IT1 & @HLS_Podcast)

Twin 2 (@HLS_Podcast): ND coaches and fans should resist the urge to work on offensive contingencies long enough to focus on the task at hand–stifling the inevitable service academy pep. Some will justifiably predict big points for ND. But this Irish team is scoring less and allowing more going in than they were in 2011 vs. Air Force. Note that Air Force outgained ND in total yards in the 2011 contest and quietly scored 33. If ND remains unapologetic and sticks with what works on offense, they will roll. But if they succumb to offensive introspection as a result of the USC game, they won’t be as efficient. Still, a lot of fans may want to see new offensive faces and experimentation in this game, rather than the workhorses accumulating points. They will probably get their wish.

(Properly adjusted for the 5,896 elevation difference): Irish 37, Air Force 21

Twin 1 (@HLS_IT1): 41-21 ND

Blog Davie (@BlogDavie)

I have soaked in the other HLS members’ predictions and will now pull a move straight out of The Price is Right: I will take @HLS_Podcast’s prediction and add one point to each team’s score. Irish 38, Air Force 22

Steve in Iowa (@SteveInIowa1)

Let’s see.

I WANT to go with something along the lines of the blow out two years ago but with less points from Air Force.

48-17 ND

But you know what is really going to happen? We win blocking a last minute FG attempt come away with a squeaker. 17-16.

Why? Because ND never does as good as I think they will.

ManCaveQB (@ManCaveQB)

Despite numbers indicating an Air Force team playing better football of late, I struggle to project a scenario where Notre Dame doesn’t score plenty of points in the first half and safely secure a win in Colorado. While the USC win is a high for those inside and outside the program, it wasn’t the type of win that should lead to any measure of a hangover effect. I predict the Irish outrush the Falcons, who are 12th nationally with 269 yards per game, and finish with 250+ yards on the ground themselves. The success of Atkinson & McDaniel early will lead to a much more efficient day in the air for Tommy Rees who’ll log a couple of touchdown tosses on well executed play action passes and attempt under 20 throws on the day. Maybe we warm Andrew Hendrix up in the 4th with a few Hail Mary’s (football & traditional) before letting him work out some kinks among the young receivers. Air Force, amid a disastrous season on the field surrounded by out of their control distractions, is not in a place in 2013 to stifle Notre Dame’s push back into the Top 25.

Notre Dame 38, Air Force 10

SuperManTDJesus (@SuperManTDJesus)

To be direct about it, the Falcons are royally boned. They’ve be ravaged by injuries and their established lack of size in the trenches of both sides of the ball is going to spell utter disaster for my military academy brethren.

Look for the speed back to go off. GAIII will run for +145 and 2 scores, tab McDaniel with another 90 yds and a score and look out for Carlisle to get his fair share of work scoring another TD of his own (maybe 2). Rees doesn’t have to throw much, but will connect with TJ Jones and Corey Robinson for a score each.

I’m also looking out for a touchdown on D. I’m gonna reach and say it goes to Cole Luke on a broken screen that gets picked off and taken to the house.

A field goal or two will be expected as well. Air Force will score two in the 4th during garbage time and one in the 2nd qtr as formalities.

Final Score 55-24

The Beer

This game will be played in Colorado, I have tons of it in my fridge leftover from the Shamrock Series tailgate, and I make no apologies for this for those reasons:

Mike Garrett shot out of bed in a cold sweat from the same recurring nightmare. It started ever since he lost his job as athletic director at USC, but it turned into a nightly visitor for the past two months.

Actually, nightmare isn’t the right word — it’s a memory, a memory that he wasn’t supposed to retain. Somehow it managed to flood back in pieces, but there will some were still missing.

Thrown back into his insomniac reality, Garrett got out of bed and started a pot of coffee and immediately grabbed his leather-bound cardinal notebook adorned with then golden seal of his former employer. Inside, it was filled with sketches and quick notes of all he could remember from his fleeting memories. It had once sat in his office, but he soon realized every second was precious to piece back together the black hole in his mind. Thus, it found a new home by the only substance that allowed him function these days.

He closed his eyes and tried to put himself back in his dream, trying to unearth any new detail. In his mind’s eye he was back in the room, strapped into a chair, bandages wrapped around his head, lights flooding his sight, and shadowy figures surrounding him. Some of them, thankfully, had finally taken shape and form after months of work, especially some of those that were strapped into a similar prison as he.

Pat Haden was the focus. Practically every word spoken related to him and future plans that he had to execute. Mark Emmertt was there too and the figures around him recited NCAA bylaws while he repeated them like a Responsorial Psalm.

Overseeing it all was a lone shadowy figure partially cloaked behind a large window. It may have taken him a month alone to bring that figure into focus, but he finally managed. That man was none other than Jack Swarbrick.

It was all motivated by revenge — well, at least that’s the only thing that made sense. Garrett thought Notre Dame could move on from the “Bush Push” when Swarbrick invited him to attend a special NBC executive dinner in the fall of 2009. He thought it was an olive branch, an offer of quality networking time with Notre Dame’s new athletic director and fellow Trojan and then NBC Color Analyst, Pat Haden.

It was anything but. One pre-dinner cocktail later and now all the memories he had were his nightmares and his notebook.

He continued looking around the room trying to find something, anything that would give him something that could put this entire puzzle together. He knew it was a gigantic conspiracy to bring down USC, but how did they do it? More importantly, could he stop it?

Finally, his focus managed to catch a conversation to his side, just loud enough to overtake the monotone voice of the figure that sat before him trying to brainwash him.

“Is everything proceeding as scheduled?” asked one figure.

“Yes, sir,” responded another, “The programming process is almost complete. We nearly ready to install the trigger. Is it prepared yet?”

“Yes. And I suggest you use your ear plugs when it starts. It may just be the worst thing I’ve ever heard. I can’t believe the boss went with this, but he said it was the only logical viral solution.”

Trigger? What trigger? And how can a viral solution be something you can hear?

Garrett’s own thoughts violently snapped him back to reality, the memory was done.

“DAMMIT TO HELL!!!” he screamed, throwing his notebook across the room in frustration. “On the verge of a breakthrough and I lost it! Damn you, Jack Swarbrick! Damn you, Notre Dame!!!”

The beeping of the coffee maker interrupted his rant. Garrett grabbed a mug, poured a cup, and then reached for a bottle of Bailey’s. Yes, it was going to be another one of those days.

Garrett walked over to his couch, sipping his beverage along the way, having increased disdain for himself for putting anything Irish into his drink. As he sat, he tried to re-run the conversation in his mind again, desperately trying to find an answers that continued to escaped him.

“What in the hell can you hear, but is a viral solution?” he asked himself, “Dammit, this is like that stupid black, white, and red all over riddle. I never could figure that thing out…”

Just think Mike just think…

Garrett eyed his notebook. Perhaps writing this all down will help, he thought to himself.

Garrett grabbed the notebook and returned to his seat writing down “trigger”, “worst thing I’ve ever heard”, and “viral solution” all down. Next to “ever heard” he put down “audio?” and circled it. Still perplexed about a supposed audio solution, he drew and two way arrow between “audio” and “viral” and stared at it.

“Audio. Viral. Viral. Audio. Audio. Viral. Viral. Audio,” he muttered to himself, “Wait a second…viral audio?! As in, like, internet viral?! That has to be it! How else could Notre Dame trigger actions from multiple people across the nation? That has to be it!”

He smiled. It was pure joy, a feeling he hadn’t felt in years. Pride stemming from the breakthrough that finally happened. But then, “What in the hell kind of viral audio could ND release to the masses that would be heard by everyone?”

Defeated again, he stared at his only other clue “worst thing I’ve ever heard”.

And then, it hit him, “MOTHER OF GOD…THAT’S IT!!!”

He quickly looked at the Trojan football schedule hanging on the wall. Thankfully, the next game was a road game at Arizona State. This could be a window of opportunity. There was no chance of meeting or even contacting Haden while he was on campus not from the AD that “had no institutional control” of USC. The away game though, this could be his chance — his one chance to redeem himself and save USC.

After all, Garrett was the one who hired Lane in the first place. People told him he was crazy and somewhere deep down he believed it. He felt it was the hire he was supposed to do but never could really explain why.

This all started with Garrett becoming a puppet, but now he will be the one pulling the strings.

TO BE CONTINUED…

The Roundup

Speaking of Kiffykins…he’s going to make a very public appearance this Saturday. Early morning popcorn, y’all!

I think the Shamrock Series just got one-upped. Virginia Tech and Tennessee see our JerryWorld and raise us an entire damn racetrack.

The playoff committee is nearly a reality. The 13 members will be officially announced on Wednesday and hopefully no one makes any sexist remarks this time around. Someone other than ND and Washington fans can feel free to rage that Ty Willingham is being allowed anywhere near college football again at any time.

Good thing ND never hired Ferentz. The mere mention of this Iowa punt return news had to make ND fans twitch.

So just how bad has it gotten for Texas? Their own fans are now showing how pissed they are with their pocketbooks.

Just because it’s a bye week, doesn’t mean it isn’t important for ND. One Foot Down has the definitive guide to success.

And now, your moment of zen…from the genius that is LSUfreek:

Put These Games on Your Radar

For this bye week, I’m heading out of town with the fiancée to the middle of the Texas Hill Country. There will be no college football in my weekend plans so please enjoy it for me.

Also, I’m trying a table format this week to make the game selection easier to read/digest. Instead of notes, I’m picking against the spread (bold text) for a little bit of added fun as well. Feel free to play along in the comments.

Predictions

No predictions this week due to the bye, but we will update the standings from last week.

Bayou’s confident 38-27 ND win prediction lands him closest to the pin and had Fox kneeled the ball on his INT, Bayou misses the final score by one point. So selfish, Fox, harrumph.

Bayou’s win ties him for second and now all the HLS pickers are in the points. This is anyone’s game at the halfway point.

The Beer

With our good buddy, The Subway Domer, finding himself in blogging retirement, there is only one beer that we can truly recommend this week:
