USC, both as a university and as a football program, is mired chaos, and this saccharine petit fours soured jarringly by, well, all of this (TW: garbage), because we’re never sure if all the inept leadership is gone, or just in hiding.

Their athletic department is no better, although the run of three(!!!) inept family hires has finally ended — leadership that has overseen sanctions, and illustrious names such as Ed Orgeron, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, and Clay Helton at the helm. Can Trojan fans expect anyone other than Jon Gruden or Urban Meyer at this point? I’d call this list a murderer’s row, but I wouldn’t want to give these folks any ideas. So many of the Texas Football critiques map effortlessly to the Trojans — in a geographic recruiting hotbed where there’s no historical conference peer, the self-inflicted wounds are everywhere. For every coaching hire they get right (Pete Carroll, John Robinson) there are countless others the prove the futility of bad fits and missed opportunities (everyone else they tried to hire before Pete Carroll fell in their lap, and John Robinson again).

And the Coliseum.

Listen, this is an historic venue, set to host its third Olympic Games in less than a decade’s time. But make it a point to avoid football games at all cost. A minor-league version of the Green Monster for Major League Baseball? A venue for Evel Knievel and, coming soon, NASCAR? It’s a place that works for everything except football, so this venue’s Doofus Management Hydra tried to slap an airline sponsor on the stadium to retrofit it for football, which is about as jarring as the Soldier Field’s visual structure. All the recent upgrades do a great job of distracting patrons from realizing they’re trying to watch a game from a terrible seat.

It’s the Anti-Notre Dame Stadium in nearly every respect, a venue build specifically for football (and until very recently, patrons who will only take up 18″ on a wooden bleacher slab). As a mental simulation in contrasts, imagine yourself in a folding chair atop Notre Dame’s Library, and that’ll give you some approximation of “enjoying” a live sporting event from the Peristyle seats.

So yes, USC comes to town — named after the folks who fell for the literally the oldest trick in the book. They’ll bring with them their latest interim coach, their warmest winter gear, a perpetually disappointing record, and a roster with dangerous blue-chippers, albeit sparsely populated given their history and geography. They’ll bring their band although I don’t know why, given their esteemed place directly directly adjacent to the stadium’s loudspeakers — the same band that wears sunglasses at night and where Hollywood extras parade as the armored drum major. It’s all for show, a legacy lacking substance.

Over the last couple years we’ve witnessed the fragility of life and its customary traditions alongside an increased awareness that the future isn’t promised. Given all that,

Not much in the way of future Irish opponents on the schedule, what with mid-season byes coupled and the NBC primetime slot. Chaos Agent Cincinnati looks to go crazy against Navy, and ND fans can get Halloween fright started early thinking about the triple option defense.

The Irish are back on the good side of the metrics here this week after going against long odds each of the past two weeks. That offensive gap could easily flex depending upon who’s under center for the visitors, but ND fans have long been enamored with the backup QB, so don’t expect much to change.

These advanced stats look quite a bit like last week’s, and I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. The old saying is “if you have three quarterbacks, you have four wins” or something, but the offensive output will need to continue moving along, or else the defense will need to reprise its effort.

Irish fans are keen to point to the offense’s incremental growth despite the line’s early-season injury challenges, but the fact remains that any optimism is based primarily on potential rather than actual statistical analysis or output. The pieces certainly appear to be in place, but we’re a quarter of the way through the season and there are still too many missed opportunities and assignments to feel confident about this weekend.

We’re also in the first game of 349 straight matchups with a team coming off a bye. While it’s true there are no good college football teams in 2021, I don’t like the extra prep time that ND’s going to face, starting on Saturday. WITHOUT FURTHER ADO HERE’S YOUR PURDUE ANALYSIS

An undefeated record, if I’m reading my notes correctly, is about as well as we could expect this team to be after two games. However, some significant questions linger. The offense, with its preseason questions, has been shaky in none of the ways we feared. Line injuries have devastated the run game and Jack Coen’s pass protection, which has given rise (if you can believe this) *some* in the fanbase preferring the backup QB over the starter. Crazy, I know.

However, Purdue’s offensive statistical output is what really should inspire you to wear brown britches this Saturday afternoon. Marcus Freeman’s havoc defense has yielded far too many points thus far, and Jeff Brohm’s offense will present plenty of opportunities to capitalize if defensive miscues continue.

But y’all wanted normalcy in 2021, and anxiety-inducing football is what’s in store. Another Squeaker in South Bend, and if you want a preview, look no further than tonight’s HLS NCAA14 sim — which is reliably just as zany as the real thing.

SP+ predicts a slimmer margin of victory for the Irish this week, which should bring Irish fans comfort after Sunday night. Week 2 always corrects some opening game jitters, but bringing in a veteran team for some MACtion is enough to worry even the most level-headed Irish fan. And I’m being told we’re sticking to sports.

Bill Connelly’s preseason SP+ rankings didn’t give Irish much respect for the season as a whole (and you can hear more on our thoughts on preseason hype on this podcast episode), but the SP+ overall and personnel matchups heavily favor the visitors this weekend. FSU will try to assemble some transfer pieces as the season progresses, but even with the question marks on ND’s offense the talent and depth are superior.

Now watch Thursday night’s Sim blow a gigantic hole in this theory and fray our nerves heading into the opener.

We’ve rightly been preoccupied with Georgia and Michigan on the Notre Dame schedule, but this year’s Navy Midshipmen are pretty good and will make for a nice week of hand-wringing the week of our game later.

Quarterback Malcolm Perry has the offense clicking again after a rough 2018, and both these offenses can put up some serious points. Tulane has a more balanced attack, but there should be plenty of running, scoring, and wishbone sets. This is like an option-inclined Irish fan’s ideal scenario.
