With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, we — the Elvii of college football — have joined together to present our weekly playoff nominations to keep the selection committee honest. We call it the T.C.B. Poll.

Playoff Rankings: Week 8
Each week, the T.C.B. Poll is an aggregate of all our inputs. Scroll down to see individual selections and opinions — this is how we’d like to see the College Football Playoff if we had to narrow the field *right now* to determine a national champion. Images courtesy The Helmet Project.

No change in my poll:
- Ohio State – You stay #1 until you lose
- TCU – Can Bob Stoops crush the Frogs next month?
- LSU – Playing Bama in two weeks for the Game of the Century Part 3 I guess
- Clemson – Welcome to the Top 4 you other Tigers.
@AuburnElvis
Congratulations! It’s mid-season and every team is terrible. Well, not LSU if they continue to develop a passing game… and Clemson’s looking pretty goo- HA! Nice try, Other Tigers!
- SEC Champion (LSU) – They look pretty good. Get past Bama, and they should be going to Atlanta.
- TCU – This could be their year.
- Michigan State – I’m sticking with my “Ohio State will be the best B1G team, but still lose the conference” theory, and going with the Spartans.
- Hmmm. Well, I know it won’t be Clemson, so I guess I’ll go with Stanford. They’re still a thing, right?
@HawkeyeElvis
- Ohio State – THAT’S how we all expected the Buckeyes look isn’t it?
- LSU – The sleepy first half against WKU aside, Tigers are ramping up.
- Clemson – The door to the playoffs is wide open for Dabo and company.
- TCU – They get the Big 12 nod since Baylor now has a quarterback issue.
On deck – Michigan State, Baylor
@IrishElvis
We are far enough into the season that I’m going to start ranking my playoff teams with the following criteria: undefeated record, and schedule strength to-date. Most of college football has a backloaded schedule with year-end rivalries and whatnot, so this week’s ranking is based on current resume, not necessarily their final body of work. To that end:
- Clemson. I know, I can’t believe it either, but they have played a tougher schedule to date than any of the other three teams below. Dabo, the Clemsoning is coming eventually, and when it does, it will be painful (for you, not for the rest of us).
- LSU. Off this week, major tilt with the Fightin’ Kiffins next week. Does Les Miles have some crazy stored under his white hat? Of course he does.
- TCU. With Baylor’s QB out, they seem to be the presumptive Big XII champion. How they look at the end of the year will go a long way with playoff seed.
- Ohio State. The Buckeyes’ three-game run to the playoff begins later. Added bonus: a 1-vs.-4 matchup here means we get to see grainy footage of what got Woody Hayes fired!
