Notre Dame has suffered their first causality for the 2014 calendar year. Earlier today, sources confirmed to Keith Arnold that DaVaris Daniels would be suspended for the spring semester. Moments later, ESPN released his full statement:
“I understand that attending the University of Notre Dame is a privilege and with that comes a certain level of academic responsibility,” Daniels said. “Therefore, I will not be attending Notre Dame in the Spring semester but fully expect to re-enroll in the Summer semester to earn my degree and continue playing football for the Irish!”
Based on reports, this appears to only be an issue of poor academic performance rather than an honor code violation a la Everett Golson. Further, Daniels planning to return in the summer means that he will be in fall camp to prepare for the season.
Not great news, but it certainly could have been much worse. In fact, Daniels could have bolted for the NFL had he wanted to, but thankfully that now appears to be completely off the table.
I’m keeping an eye on you, 2014. Don’t start with the 2013 disasters. My liver can’t take it.
