Notre Dame Stadium Bag Policy Changed for 2013 Season

July 29, 2013 by Ryan Ritter

Used to packing up a bag full of ponchos, blankets and other gameday necessities to bring into Notre Dame Stadium? Well, you will have to come up with a new plan as Notre Dame announced that the Notre Dame Stadium Bag policy will see some changes at the start of the 2013 season:

As part of an ongoing commitment to safety and security, the University of Notre Dame has adopted a new policy on bags and other items fans can bring into its football stadium on game days. bags_300

Beginning with the 2013 season-opening game Aug. 31 (Saturday), fans will be prohibited from bringing large bags such as backpacks, duffel bags and totes into the stadium (see photo for examples). Smaller bags, such as purses, will be allowed but will be inspected by trained security personnel, as will blankets, coats, ponchos and other similar items.

“Our top priority is safety, and we believe that in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing and other incidents through the years, this new policy is the prudent course of action,” said Michael Seamon, associate vice president for campus safety and director of game day operations. “We know our fans will adapt quickly to the policy, and we appreciate their cooperation in helping to make Notre Dame Stadium as safe as possible.”

Seamon said his hope is that fans would not bring bags of any kind into the stadium, and he added that the addition of specially trained inspectors will ensure that any delays at the gates will be kept to a minimum.

University officials benchmarked the bag policies of the National Football League and others in collegiate athletics before amending Notre Dame’s policy.

Thankfully, Notre Dame didn’t go as far as the NFL did in their enhanced security policies as they now ban purses under the umbrella of larger bags.

So, if you want to bring in some extra necessities, you will likely need a little bit of extra planning and channel your inner Jack Bauer to fit everything you’d ever need into smaller, purse-like bags.

I think it’s about time. Too many people want to make their seat in the stadium as comfortable and convenient as their LaZBoys at home without any consideration for the people around them. I would like to see all venues do this. I know at some pro stadiums they are putting the same policy in place beginning this year. If you can afford the price of the ticket, you should be able to afford the concessions sold at any stadium or venue. When I try to beat the halftime rush, it is like walking through a pasture lifting your legs over backpacks and the like. I say kudos ND.
