This is why I love Notre Dame. Not the video itself, but those words: “Nobody Lives in Our World. Nobody Knows What It’s Like to Be at Notre Dame”. And it’s that uniqueness – that singular presence in the college football world, in the sports world, in the world in general, that continually brings me back, over and over and over again, to my unrelenting love for this University and this Football team.
“Yeah you’re high and might blahblahblah” says the hater. “No, we just believe in standards” I respond.
“You haven’t won recently” says the hater. “But we will again soon” I say. “And by the way, we’ll be the winningest program in history again soon as well” (when we overtake Michigan this year)
“ND is just like everyone else” says the hater. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Notre Dame is not just a place next to a lake in the state of Indiana. Notre Dame is a set of ideals. It’s a community that tries, REALLY REALLY tries, to be helpful in the world. To better the world through education, resources, volunteering, and yes, through Football.
We take that approach and apply it on a field with 11 guys banging heads – this team is the embodiment of those ideals: hard work, education, moral values…God, Country, Notre Dame.
As we take the field this Saturday, and throughout the Fall, remember this: we don’t just play football to win games. We play football to win games and to PROVE that a team (and a university, a family of students/faculty/staff/alums/subwayalums/fans) can do things the RIGHT WAY and still come out on top – and make the world a better place along the way.
In a world where it’s all about glory of self, and of money, Notre Dame stands for something more. Let’s allow the power of these ideals to permeate everything we do this season – as players, students, and fans.
Now let’s go kick some ass.

Agree–that message should be kept front and center for ND, particularly with everything else that is going on these days. How sweet will it be to return to the top of the heap having done things the right way?
But I hope they didn’t pay much money to have the rest of that video produced–there are much better ND videos available for free all over You Tube. That Jerry Bruckheimer-esque sound track is just awful.
I think it was made internally – agree it could be better – but the speeches/access for footage they have is pretty sweet.
“I came here as a young man and founded a university which I named after the Mother of God. Now she had to burn it to the ground to show me I dreamed too small a dream. Tomorrow we will build it bigger and, when it is built, we will put a gold dome on top with a golden statue of the Mother of God so that everyone who comes this way will know to whom we owe whatever great future this place has.”
– Rev. Edward F. Sorin, CSC
Bring ’em luck saturday B-man.
Biscuit you self-righteous, arrogant….haha I can’t even bring myself to say it. Haters be crazy, for sure.
Q: Describe the spirit of Notre Dame.
Lou Holtz: If you’ve been there, no explanation is necessary. If you haven’t, no explanation will be sufficient.
GO IRISH!
Somebody give me a fucking wall to run through. Five more days, seriously? Can’t wait that long.
I will watch that about 27 more times between now and Saturday. GO IRISH!!
Nice article. You forgot just one thing, players actually graduate at ND. Other large name schools the grad rate is horrible.
Can’t wait for kick off.
Cheers, go irish !
Loved it. GOOOOO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very well said.
Great video. Just needed the Fight Song.
GO IRISH GO!
“Nobody lives in our world.”
I love the place too (I went there but did not graduate) and I must tell you that that very phrase is as elitist as you can get and if you want a reason why Notre Dame is hated by many people that is as good a reason as any.
Notre Dame does many things well, but one of the many things she does NOT do well is humble, and that does not speak well for a University who wants others to think of her as Catholic.
That having been said – I hope USF gets a fine butt-kicking this weekend.
If you think that phrase was meant in an elitist way, you must not have understood how it was meant. It’s simply true. You don’t know Notre Dame unless you are a part of it. Period.
Having attended and graduated I can almost agree with your what you’re trying to say… but if you really think that Notre Dame “does not do humble well,” well, I’m sorry you didn’t get the full experience that I did. I’m not saying there isn’t a sense of arrogance and elitism among a minority of the student body–I even had a letter published in The Observer commenting on it–but it’s not the norm, and I’m sorry if you failed to meet the thousands of bright, caring, and indeed, humble students who go there.
Having confidence, living with purpose and knowing you’re in a special place are not antithetical to humility.
