Everett Golson is Irish.
With a few recent decommits, Coach Kelly and staff are turning things back the other way with recent commitments from McDaniel and now Golson.
Golson is a true dual-threat QB that can beat you with his feet or his arm. And he’s not just a runner that can kinda pass. This recruit has thrown for a boatload of TDs (and very few INTs) and has led his team to multiple title games.
Golson is a 3-star on Rivals, a 4-star on Scout (#14 QB), a 4-star on ESPN, and a recent switch from UNC, where Butch Davis’ program is falling apart at the seams. He’s also a kick-ass student, posting a 3.8 or 4.0 GPA depending on which source you believe. Either way, smart kid and a solid athlete.
Golson will enroll early to compete in what should be a pretty open competition with Crist, Rees, Hendrix and now Golson pushing for the starting job. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing Golson redshirt to pick up the system and mature before he sees the field, but I’m sure he’ll come in wanting to compete. Should be an interesting Spring for the QBs.
This is a solid pick up for the Irish at this point in the process, and Golson has a ton of upside. He can also bring more of a running threat to ND’s spread under Kelly, which I’m sure Kelly values a ton.
Next up? How about Ishaq, Huggins and French? C’mon down!

I’m really impressed with these last couple of kids, Mcdaniel and Golson. Both of them seem to fly a little bit under the recruiting radar (one too white for his position, one too short for his position), but they play in talent-heavy regions and have put up amazing numbers. Most importantly, from the sound of things they are both legit leaders. I am really, really excited about these pickups.

I think this is a HUGE pickup. As noted from my Sideline post about the future of this offense, I think Kelly wants to run an offense that is much more similar to Oregon’s than the pass-all-the-time spread he mostly ran at Cincy. I think this is because he just didn’t have a guy who could do both at Cincy most of the time.
If you look at Golson’s numbers, they are astounding. This kid is a much better athlete than he has received credit for. I think the only reason he isn’t a 5 star prospect with a bullet is because of his height. If he was 6’4 this kid would be one of the top recruits in the country.

Golson is 6th All-Time in the history of U.S. high school football with 148 passing TDs.

Hopefully this is just the beginning to a big recruiting season finish!

Solid pick up, looks like he is coming to ND for the right reasons, and the best line of his interview is his answer “my teammates” when asked what his strengths are.

Not only is this kid a potential game-changer as a dual-threat QB, he is an very well-rounded young man. Whenever you read stories from local newspapers about recruits they are generally fluff pieces, but most don’t have as much material to use as the article I read on Golson. He is going to play basketball at ND, too (and would have played for UNC). He is a good student, as The Biscuit pointed out. He also plays a variety of instruments, including the piano, even though he hasn’t had formal lessons. He’s considered a “dual-threat” QB because of his sick athleticism, but he really is a great thrower of the football. He entered this season with a chance to be the #1 all-time high school QB in terms of TD passes, but missed some time due to injury. I don’t think people are excited enough about this kid. He has “winner” written all over him.

Three things I noticed were;
1. Ability to look off the defensive secondary.
2. Able to extend the play behind the line of scrimage (Floyd bring your razor and pillow)
3. Will tuck and run if the first two fail. (Floyd and Riddick will block for a TD run).

170 lbs? Gonna need to bulk up a little.

Watching the highlight video posted, it seemed like a disproportionately large number of those highlight plays started five or ten yards behind the original line of scrimmage (i.e., there had been a penalty or sack or something on an earlier play to back them up). Just something I noticed…not sure if it makes any difference, but defenses play differently when it’s 3rd and 20, y’know?
I’m still excited about this kid.

Good Question about the brace… past surgery risk?? would be interesting to know about?
