Folks, I’m confused. Really confused.
I hated this loss, and I put it on Charlie as the leader of this team.
But those people saying he now MUST win out or he’ll be/should be fired? You’re literally on crack. Smoke up friends, smoke up!
You’re telling me that if Charlie drops one game and wins a decent bowl game and finishes 11-2 he should be fired? Or even if he loses that bowl game (or another reg season game and wins the bowl) and goes 10-3 he should be fired? You’re freaking nuts if thats the case.
11-2/10-3 is a good season. We just lost a really competitive game to a decent Michigan squad that is much, much better than anyone expected, in the last second.
I know fans are frustrated because we ‘should’ have won. I know fans are sick and tired of mediocre. I am too. And I agree that if ND drops several more (>2 more) games this year, Weis should be, and will be, gone. But man, there are TEN FREAKING GAMES LEFT IN THE SEASON, plus a potential bowl. We’ve played 2 games – 1 we looked great, the other we looked great at times, and sloppy at times, and we almost pulled off a win against a decent team. I hate that loss, you have a right to as well, but c’mon. 11-2, 10-3, are good (if not great) results. Who fires a coach with 11 wins in a season? Answer: NO-FREAKING-BODY EVER. And there is just a ton of season left to play. Heck, by week 10 we could be talking about how great we’ve played, our amazing upset of USC and a potential BCS berth. We could be staring at 3-4 losses too -but we don’t know yet! Who gives up on a team or its coach 2 games in? Ridonculous.
The bar has not changed. If Charlie drops much below 10 wins, he’ll be gone. Yes, the true bar is a NC, but like I said last year – you don’t go from 3-9 to 12-0, and you don’t often go from 7-6 to 12-0 either. If we’re playing great football and we win a lot of games this year, I’ll mark it as progress toward that NC goal. If not, well…I won’t.
I don’t think that 9-3 is good enough. Course it’s not. But that doesn’t mean Weis will be fired for 9-3. And your calling for it, especially NOW, doesn’t make it any more likely (we can tell you’re just WISHING we’d lose 5 so we can fire him – the epitome of being a horrid fan), and doesn’t help in any way either. In your fantasy la-la-land where going off and hiring another new guy to spend 4 years installing a system only to get canned again, it’s a great decision. In the real world, it’s idiotic. 3-9 to 7-6 to 11-2/10-3 is real progress. It’s not our end goal, but it’s progress towards that goal.
I welcome debate around the coach, his decisions, the team, etc. But demanding/prognosticating the firing of our coach 2 games into the season is foolhardy at best, and hurtful at worst. If this team goes 11-2, 10-3 with a solid bowl win I will celebrate. I hope ND Nation can come to its senses and do the same.
If we don’t get there, I’ll join you all in the call for a new HC. But I’m not planning on that at all. I expect we’ll win, and I’ll root for this team, and its coach, as hard as I possibly can until the season ends, and then take it from there.
Rant over.

Biscuit,
Thank you. This is when it can be embarrasing to be a ND fan, when people are jumping off the ledge and seem to want to bring somebody down with them. Great point about 7-6 one year, and the next being 12-0. Doesn’t happen.
There is a lot of football left to go, and the direction of the program still “FEELS” like it is going upward, even though the loss was tough.

I with ya pal, if people can’t see the progress over the last two years, I do not know what they’re looking at. Sure it hurts, hurts like hell and living in Alabama, boy do I take a lot of it, but that’s what happens when you’re a irish fan in the south. I think we’ll be fine, our defense has to pick it up though. Charlie does not call the defense, he’s running the offense and in my eyes have looked pretty impressive lately. Weiss loves ND, he get’s it, I know 5 years things could be better, but I like the direction this team is going. We lost to Michigan at Michigan, in front of a very hostle crowd, by 4 points. We’ll be fine. GO IRISH!!!
