I know this has been all over the place, but I thought the ND Observer article on Lou was spot on, and deserved a link.
I don’t know if they really need a UM (Sucks!) comparison to make this hit home, but the point is a good one, and the comparison apt given this past weekend’s (shite-y) opponent: Lou was, always, an ND guy at heart. And it shows today.
“I think you’re a Notre Dame man growing up. I was Notre Dame from the time I could make the sign of the cross, so to speak. Whereas you’re a Michigan man when you get there,” Holtz said.
Holtz added that the late Bo Schembechler, who could be called the quintessential “Michigan Man” because of his success with the Wolverines, could not have been so beforehand because he was an assistant under former Buckeyes legend Woody Hayes.
“I guarantee you Bo Schembechler wasn’t a Michigan Man before he went there. You don’t coach at Ohio State and be a Michigan Man,” Holtz said.
Lou is unapologetically an ND supporter. In person, on the mic, on ESPN, it never stops. And while I’m sure it annoys the hell out of thousands of people, he just doesn’t care – it’s who Lou is and he’s not going to hide it. While 11-0 prognostications and such are a bit over-bullish, I can’t complain about having Lou in our corner.
Back at Lou’s last game at ND stadium, he gave a heartwarming speech to the student body. We all knew we’d miss Lou (but boy, we had NO IDEA how much!), and even though he seemed to give a heartfelt/witty/enjoyable speech 4 times a week, it was a special one. It’s great that Lou was welcomed back to the stadium permanently Saturday. He deserves it.
