I keep hearing comments that go something like this, “Why the heck does anyone care about an 0-2 Michigan (sucks! – ed.) playing an 0-2 Notre Dame? Clearly the media is just biased towards Notre Dame.”
Well, looking at the slate for the top 25 teams in the country (as picked by the coaches poll), I’d have to say it’s got something to do with cupcakes.
| Rank | Team | Opponent |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Southern Cal | #14 Nebraska |
| 2 | LSU | Middle Tennessee State |
| 3 | Oklahoma | Utah State |
| 4 | West Virginia | Maryland |
| 5 | Florida | #22 Tennessee |
| 6 | Texas | Central Florida |
| 7 | Wisconsin | The Citadel |
| 8 | California | La. Tech |
| 9 | Louisville | Kentucky |
| 10 | Ohio State | Washington |
| 11 | UCLA | Utah |
| 12 | Penn State | Buffalo |
| 13 | Rutgers | Norfolk State |
| 14 | Nebraska | #1 Southern Cal |
| 15 | Georgia Tech | #21 Boston College |
| 16 | Arkansas | Alabama |
| 17 | South Carolina | South Carolina State |
| 18 | Virginia Tech | Ohio |
| 19 | Oregon | Fresno State |
| 20 | Clemson | Furman |
| 21 | Boston College | #15 Georgia Tech |
| 22 | Tennessee | #5 Florida |
| 23 | Georgia | Western Carolina |
| 24 | Hawaii | UNLV |
| 25 | Texas A&M | La. Monroe |
And don’t think for a moment we’re letting you off the hook, Texas, Ohio State, or Hawaii. We’re betting those games looked like certified lay-ups back when you scheduled them. And if that’s the case, that means 14 of the 25 scheduled cupcakes for the third week of the 2007 schedule.

The Washington game was scheduled around the time they won the Rose Bowl. We played them at home in 2003 as the first part of the series. Good try, though
I just don’t think 1-A schools should be allowed to schedule 1-AA’s. I was glad to see michigan get dumped, and I just wish Akron had stung OSU. OSU must be really proud of their 20-2 win against the mighty “Zips.”
OhEssYou,
Thanks. I guess I had it backwards. Washington scheduled OSU when they thought OSU would be a layup.
We played the #9 team in the nation (the perennial #1 defense for the past two decades) and the team that just knocked off Auburn. One cupcake a weenie does not make. C’mon…
