You’re probably wondering what the heck is going on with the ND football program. There have been a lot of rumors flying around.
Here’s what we do know:
- The Notre Dame Football Program is having a press conference at 1pm Eastern.
- WNDU (that’s a local news station in South Bend) is reporting that Darius Walker will “test the waters” on the NFL draft this year. And apparently on air (we can’t actually watch their telecast, living in places not called South Bend), Jeff Jeffers has stated that the news conference scheduled today is to announce Darius’ decision. We don’t know if this is a news conference to tell us that he’s leaving (and if so, we’ll have a lot to say about how much we man-crush on Walker), or if it’s to tell us he’s not leaving (in that case, why the presser?), or to tell us he’s thinking about it (again, why have a presser for that?).
- WNDU is also, apparently, reporting that Charlie Weis wont even be at the press conference.
Notice something missing?
What we don’t know includes, but certainly is not limited to:
- What, if any, staff changes have occurred within the Notre Dame football program. We do know that many people we trust, despite the fact that we only know them by their internet personas, have, more or less, confirmed that coaching changes will occur if they have not already. These are the sorts of people that tend not to blab about something unless there are actual facts to back it up.
- We do not know if anything about staff changes will be addressed today at 1pm Eastern, but it sure seems unlikely if WNDU is correct and Charlie wont be there to announce it.
- We do not know if anything about potential 5th year players will be addressed today at 1pm Eastern, but it sure seems unlikely if WNDU is correct and Charlie wont be there to announce it.
Final Analysis/Blatant, Uninformed Guess: This presser will almost certainly have nothing to do with possible staff changes, but that doesn’t mean that staff changes have not or will not occur in the relatively near future. There’s a lot in play here. For one thing, the head coaching carousel has nothing on the assistant coaching carousel. Better to just call it the Assistant Coaching Scary, Spinning Tea Cup Ride From Hell. Also, Weis is likely to want to take a little time with these decisions and moves, as he’s probably not too pleased with some of the results he got from doing everything over the phone during his first staff compilation. We still fully expect changes to be made and for a majority of the ND fan base to be quite pleased with the results.
Finally, if Darius Walker does choose to move on to the NFL today or in the near future, we’d just like to say thanks. Thanks for being a shining star amidst the darkness. Thanks for, if you will, being a candle in the wind that refused to burn out. You were like a rocket man and a tiny dancer all at once.

Elton John reference=classic. I guess I never realized how much EJ resembled Austin Powers.

Even though he plays for ND, I like Walker a fair bit. My gut tells me this is not a good move for Walker.
Most teams do not announce coaching moves until after signing day, unless it is a situation like FSU where the coaches were preventing recruits from coming.
