Bob Davie’s Grapes are Sour

January 7, 2007 by The Biscuit

Per Q’s earlier post, “Mr.” Bob Davie has taken it upon himself to take Chuck Weis to task…with such lame-ass statements as “the mystique has worn off”  and “I don’t know that the program is going in a positive direction” and “I am so damn jealous that sometimes I just sit in my tub, with the shower running hot, and cry while hugging a fuzzy bunny rabbit I nicknamed Shorty.”

You know, I never disliked Bob.  He wasn’t a great coach, but it really wasn’t his fault – he shouldn’t have been hired so I blame the administration as much.  I HATE watching ND games with BD as a commentator, mainly because someone that managed to destroy talent on such a regular basis should never get to criticize a coach of quality, such as C-dub.  But now, after this, the loathing begins.

Here’s the thing, Bob.  You don’t get to SAY these things.  You simply don’t.  Do you want to know why?  Because your grapes are sour, and it’s freaking obvious.

The evidence:

  • Bob was a good recruiter, and managed to bring in solid classes by running off Holtz’s coattails and saying things like “We have the best team in the nation, the best students in the nation, the best dining hall in the nation…” ad infinitum.  But, he also managed a ridiculously average record, barely squeaking by or losing to teams he should beat, and always losing to those better-thought-of.  The Rub?  Charlie Weis has taken an under-talented squad and OUTPERFORMED.  That means his coaching has HELPED.  Mr. Bob took extremely talented teams and UNDERPERFORMED.  This is because he had no idea how to coach kids, make them better, and make a true team out of them.
  • Worst clock management moment ever:  Bob manages to get starting QB Jarious Jackson injured on the last play of the game, while also giving the competition two points in the final play of a game where a little clock management would’ve helped a ton.  Ummm, Bob?  You don’t get to question a guy that’s 20-6 over his first two years with that kind of coaching-from-your-ass.
  • Pure, outright jealousy.  Bob, we know you didn’t have any mystique.  You COULDN’T. You were a fairly boring man, that was a good Defensive Coordinator, that should’ve never been a head coach in the first place.  Calling out that C-dub has lost his mystique is just pure jealousy showing through, and it makes you look like a 6 year old that’s mad that he was picked last in kickball.  If Charlie’s mystique is fading, can you please explain why he is CONSTANTLY rumored to be headed to the NFL?  Do NFL teams court a guy with no mystique?  No, and you are the prime example.  How have those job offers been flowing lately buddy?  Is the inbox flooded?  Alabama? Miami?  No?  Shocking.
  • And ND is not going in a positive direction?  Consecutive 10-win and BCS seasons, Top 5 recruiting classes, Average Team GPA > 3.0, Commitment of the #1 Recruit in a Decade…hmmmm, sounds positive to me.  Anyone?  Frye?  Frye?

So Bob, in the future, get back to your semi-professional behavior of just passive-aggressivness during ESPN broadcasts.  At least then it’s not obvious what’s really going on.  And that way, you won’t be destroyed on web sites across the world for your assanine remarks.

The recruits roll in, the players continue to improve because of a SOLID coaching effort by C-dub and his staff, and the future is only looking brighter for the Fighting Irish.

Bob, enjoy the booth.  I will be tuning into the local AM call for all future ND games on ESPN.  I don’t care about the time delay, that’s what TIVO is for.

Go Irish.

Ouch.

Yes, Bob davie was not the right guy for ND, I think everyone will acknowledge that. With that in mind though, are some of his critiques not valid? How long does CW get to use the “blame it on the old coach” routine, especially when most of the key contributors were recruited by Ty. Combine that with the fact that there has been no marquee win yet. Next year is year 3, his first class will be Jr’s, then can CW be held accountable if the D is still average at best?

My point is I do think CW is a good coach and does well with the talent, but there are some valid concerns here. They just can not be raised by Bob Davie, who actaully isn’t that bad when he is not doing ND games.

DTK, thre are some who already want to know “what’s wrong with Charlie?” We usually throw rotten produce at them and tell their spouses that they should really read up on alcoholism and it’s treatment.
BTW, Charlie’s “1st class” is laughable. There are some fine kids in that class, but it’s incredibly small due to the fact that Charlie couldn’t really recruit anyone. He was busy winning a Super Bowl.
    Shit happens.
Look for some things to change defensively.

No, his ‘critiques’ aren’t valid. He is doing what most ex-coaches do, flinging mud. Everyone knows ND’s D wasn’t great this year, and the lack of depth in terms of talent across the board (all that speed everyone was talking about) was a direct result of 2 horrid Ty classes (a few gems in there, but small and not meeting key needs like DB, OL, DL, LB, etc.) and Charlie’s first class being small bc of his previous job (read Q’s note above). Other people can make valid critiques, not BD.

And I am okay with most people saying we didn’t ‘deserve’ a BCS berth. (After the BCS Championship, they’re all just high-paying scrimmages anyway, and the criteria for ‘deserving’ was met by ND based on the established rules…but, I don’t mind the argument). Bc, the D was suspect, it would’ve been a miracle if we’d won that game, etc. etc. But Bob Davie doesn’t get to make those critiques, given his performance at ND. And he especially doesn’t get to say things about Charlie personally, regarding mystique or the direction of the program, or, really, anything else.

Good lord, how do you really feel about the guy. All I was trying to do was point out that there may be a middle ground between thso who ask “what’s wrong with charlie” and frankly, the treatment that you guys seem to give him.

So now you are willing to lower the bar for him next year because of a small first class? So when does there have to be some progress on D? When can questions be asked? Don’t get me wrong, I think you guys have a good one in CW, but let’s not pretend there may not be a fault or two here.

By the way guys, I am impressed with the “direction” of site so far. It has turned into a regular read for me. Keep up the good work.

    DTK,
I think we’ll be looking for improvement on D next year. And I think there will be significant reasons for that expectation very soon.

Weis isn’t infallible. We’re Catholic. We know who’s infallible and who isn’t.

Weis stopped the bleedind after Davieham left a caonnon-ball sized gusher in the body of the program.  He gets some benefit of the doubt.

ok, the consensus is that Davie was a marginal coach. I agree with that.

BUT, CW or no CW, top flight football means DEFENSE, and we have not addressed that need, either on the field or in recruiting. This year’s class has some offensive weapons, but 2 LB’s, 1 DB, 2 DE’s and 1 DT. That’s not good enough. This past weekend we lost out on several top prospects, like Will Blackwell (DT) Ben Martin (DE), and recently, Martez Wilson (DE). We need these kind of guys….

Nothing against CW, but he has a blind spot about his staff and about the defensive side of the ball. We need a REAL defensive coordinator; someone who is as strong a personality as CW so that he can establish what CW does with the offense.

The unmentioned follow-on to Biscuit’s “worst time management ever,” is the little-recalled extreme probability that the injury to Jarious Jackson cost us a victory at SC the following game, AND an invite to one of the Big 4 bowl games that year (as well as all the usual benefits of that game; exposure, practice time for non-starters, $ for scholarships/etc.). I was at that game with my sons, and later at the CF HOF, and nearly bought a book there that was entitled “Time Management in Football.” Seeing that title, having just witnessed the game, was painfully ironic; I doubt he’d have even read it. Davie has no business commenting negatively on any coach’s ability.

DTK, i dig your participation and that we’ve become a regular read. and my post wasn’t supposed to say that CW can’t be criticized, but that blanket statements like ‘not in a positive direction’ are a bit off-base, and more importantly that Bob Davie just can’t be the one making them (or Mark May or anyone else on the HLS hit list)…

oh, and my vitriolic reaction to BD, and consistent praise of charlie is a function of the site: herLOYALsons – if i was going to be fair and objective we would have a site called herfairandobjectivesons – but we didnt like the ring to it, and i’d rather spew ND-tilted rants than come across as impartial, or even rational at times. so i’d say prepare for it here, at least from me.
