For those of us wondering where Everett Golson is going to play out his final year of eligibility, Monday was supposed to be the day he announced. But Monday came and went with the news that not only would there be no announcement, there would be more visits to more schools. This has led me to wonder if we aren’t like so many Dany Zukos, over-thinking things with Sandy Olsson. Maybe, instead, we should be watching out for where Frenchy‘s going.
Frenchy, obviously, is Matt Hegarty, who graduated this past weekend, along with Number Five, and who, like Number Five, has a fifth year of collegiate eligibility to run out. Like Number Five, he has been linked to Florida State, albeit far earlier than our Everett. So why haven’t they, or either one, committed?
To my mind, they’re either trying to go the same place together or they’re trying to go different places together. Apart. You know what I mean.
For Hegarty, a stalwart along Notre Dame’s offensive line, Florida State holds promise of playing time, if not an outright starting spot. A glance up and down the Seminoles roster coming out of Spring shows that its O-line is young, although the way they throw red shirts around in Tallahassee, the average age is Medicare-eligible. At center, Ryan Hoefeld was pressed into service and played well over seven games that included four starts. Hegarty could add incredibly valuable experience at guard and center to a line that is every bit as good, if not better, year in and year out, than Notre Dame’s.
For Golson, the lure of Tallahassee is pretty well-documented at this point. To my mind, if he goes, he starts, regardless of what Jimbo says about “negotiations.” Golson is simply better, and more experienced, than any QB currently or expected to be competing for the Seminoles’ job come August.
So, if Tallahassee is a good fit for either of them, why haven’t they committed? Are they waiting to see where the other goes? Are they trying not to relive their flubbed exchange against the very team they’re both eyeing?
Given that they’re members of the same offensive unit, who have shared one of the more intimate relationships in all of sport, the fact that they’re not overt in their search speaks in favor of their desire to go their own ways. What better enticement for a quarterback looking for a starting job than to bring his own center, and vice versa? Because they aren’t, because they’ve both been linked to Florida State, and because Golson pulled back from the edge of announcing yesterday, it seems that they’re trying to work out an announcement that sees them on opposing teams.
