From Under the Dome to Under the Lights, Mike Lee Fights Seever Tonight

August 4, 2012 by Bayou Irish

Former Notre Dame Bengal Bouts Champion and finance major Mike Lee (9-0-0) steps back in the ring tonight, in his first fight since defeating Eliseo Durazo on June 8. Tonight, Lee takes on Tyler Seever (13-11-1), an eight year professional fighter out of Saint Joseph, Missouri, at the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Unbeknownst to most fight fans, including yours truly, when Lee defeated Durazo in four and six rounds, he did so on a bum right hand, still healing from surgery. That Lee not only went ahead with the fight, but took it to Durazo speaks well for his fortitude and tenacity. Or maybe it’s the avocado-laden Subway sandwiches. Who knows?

In any event, Seever is going to be more of a test for Lee than was Durazo, who came into the fight looking well out of shape. Seever’s a 28 year old veteran fighter on a five bout win streak, albeit against middling competition. This appears to be Seever’s first Vegas fight, so I am pretty sure he’s going to be up for it. You have to assume Lee’s going to be.

In watching the Durazo fight, Lee displayed competency and a good amount of power, but he clearly lacks elite hand and foot speed at this point. Lee may be challenged by Seever, who has crumpled his last two opponents by TKO in under three minutes total. If Lee is able to go 10-0 by defeating Seever, though, I am going to be convinced that he’s the real deal. While a title fight may not be in the cards any time soon, an undefeated Lee would be hard to keep out of the conversation, especially with his backstory of academic and humanitarian accomplishment.

So, if you’ve had your fill of Tommy Rees suspension chatter or FieldTurf rumors, Mike Lee might just be the diversion you’re looking for.
