Mark Jones, play-by-play man for the OSU vs. NIU battle royale left me nearly speechless today when he interviewed former OSU linebacker/Current Packers Linebacker A.J. Hawk over the phone during the 2nd quarter of the game.
As the interview was being wrapped up, Mark exposed the fact that his interview questions were written for him by someone else because he actually said, and I quote (sorta. Not too sure. May not be verbatim.), “So who do you like in the game later tonight? I know you’ve gone and married a…. Notre…. a Notre Dame… a former Notre Dame graduate???”
A.J., being polite, just went along, understanding that what the question was really trying to do was yet again hype that A.J. Hawk’s wife is Brady Quinn’s sister.
How completely aloof does one need to be to A) Work for ABC sports B) Make a living doing play-by-play for college football at ABC Sports and C) Have no idea that A.J. Hawk is married to Laura Quinn? Seriously. Ya think the guy goes around saying things like, “So…. That Al Queda guy. Who is he, exactly?” Because I have a feeling that’s about the level we’re dealing with. My pet goldfish knew that Laura Quinn is married to A.J.Hawk. And we all know this, not by choice, but because ABC Sports rammed it down our throats with the delicate touch of MOAB bomb. We didn’t care about this when the news first broke. We didn’t want to hear any more about it during the Fiesta Bowl. We asked why the damned network kept harping on it. And now we know. It’s because ABC/ESPN Sports’ own people have the attention span of a fruit fly.
