Well, it’s that time of year. Media day, otherwise known as #Swatchmas aka “The Day We See the Shamrock Series Jerseys”, has arrived. I must say that, once again, I am very pleasantly surprised with the look.

Let’s start the uniform review with what usually is the most controversial element every year: the helmet.

This year, a lot was done to the helmet, but I must say it is an incredible look. The inspiration for the entire uniform came from the unique architecture on campus. As the golden helmets have always been a nod to the Golden Dome, these helmets take it a step further by adding in the familiar pattern of the Dome on the helmet. As the Shamrock Series helmets have often done, additional elements were added to the helmet in the form of a navy blue ND monogram and stripe.

Personally, I think it works. If you just have the Dome texture lines on the helmet, I think it would look off, especially in contrast to the rest of the uniform which is dominated by the navy blue. It’s simple, doesn’t go overboard, and it matches the facemask perfectly as well.

Speaking of the rest of the uniform, the attention to detail on the jersey itself is incredible:

Again, the Dome pattern appears on the gold elements, but on the jersey we see design elements that you would find on inside the Main Building. Yes, it’s a nod to ND’s buildings, not some Affliction knockoff.

If there is one element I’m not too high on, it’s the undershirt (or “base layer” as you may see it called). That’s a bit too much for my personal tastes, but I’m not going to be seeing it on the field anyways, so I really don’t care.

Another unique touch on the uniform comes at the bottom of the jersey:

The “God, Country, Notre Dame” slogan is a new touch now featured on all ND Under Armour Jerseys, including the traditional home and away jerseys. It’s a great nod to ND’s tradition and I think it’s a great way to differentiate, from a marketing standpoint, the old Adidas jerseys with the new Under Armour ones (besides the logo).

The only other elements left to discuss are the pants and the cleats. For the second year in a row, Notre Dame has one color dominating the majority of the uniform (last year’s was nearly all-white). The gold diagonal stripe on the pants breaks that up fairly well as do the gold cleats. In fact, when looked at as a whole, the uniform really looks quite well thought-out at each gold element seems to be in a perfect spot to not create a look that has too much blue.

Overall, A+ work from Under Armour in their first crack at the Shamrock Series jerseys. Personally, I think they get better every year and I love how the Dome/Main Building served as the inspiration for this year’s look.

The only downside? These jersey are absolutely wasted on Purduzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……………

Get your annual Shamrock Series rage/anger/joy/horror/trolling/enthusiasm ready, because it appears that Notre Dame Football’s secret might be out.

According to the UniWatch Twitter account, one of their commentators got a sneak peak at both the traditional home and 2014 Shamrock Series uniforms:

As promised, Under Armour left the class home uniform alone. The only real change comes with the base (aka, the undershirt) that has a “God, Country, Notre Dame” reference. This sounds like something I will probably immediately buy because that sounds amazing.

The Shamrock Series uniforms of course, are the main event with this leak. And, if this leak is legit, color me excited to see what they look like.

The pants are the only thing that really concerns me. Striping can be a tough thing to pull off in a uniform much less a diagonal pattern. This of course, leads to many additional questions such as “how big is the diagonal slant?” and “how thick is the striping?” and those won’t be answered until we actually see these things in the wild.

The helmet, usually the major issue of the Shamrock Series uniform (save for last year, that thing was great), sounds like a good practice in simplicity. Gold with a ND monogram works just fine. Helmets should never go too crazy so I like that direction.

Beyond that, I have to say I’m excited to see gold being a major accent on the jersey. It spices the jersey up a bit, uses our colors, and it’s something that we really don’t do as far as the jerseys are concerned.

Personally, I’m excited. I hope these things are unveiled soon so I can see what this all actually looks like (or laugh that we all got duped by this).

ESPN’s Darren Rovell broke the news that Notre Dame will be leaving Adidas as their exclusive athletic apparel provider for Under Armour at the end of the current academic year. While the exact contract deals aren’t known, the deal will cover all Irish athletics and I’m sure it will involve a truckload of cash and likely Notre Dame being the premier Under Armour school as it once was for Adidas.

And really, that’s why you should be excited about this move. Current Under Armour FBS schools are: Auburn, Hawaii, Maryland, Texas Tech, Boston College, Utah, Northwestern, South Florida and South Carolina. There are some good teams in there, but none with the brand recognition and national fan base that Notre Dame brings to the table along with their 126 years of football history. Under Armour’s founder, Kevin Plank, is from Maryland, but I seriously doubt ND signs any deal that would put Maryland above them.

With Adidas, Michigan had that wonderful clause that forced them into top dog status for life. With Nike, there is no way we would ever eclipse the money thrown at Oregon.

Under Armour in comparison is a young company that is begging for a high-profile school to throw money at. When I attended this year’s title game in Pasadena (reminder: sister currently attends Auburn), I saw loads of Auburn signs and ads with Under Armour sponsoring and branding. In comparison, the Nike/FSU presence was non-existent.

Further, for people worried UA will turn ND into some kind of crazy uniform experiment grounds, note that Auburn hasn’t strayed from their traditional look. Likewise, South Carolina hasn’t strayed far as well. UA will get the Shamrock Series as their one experiment, so I have no doubt the traditional home/away look will be hands off.

Personally, I love the move, not just for the above reasons, but I’ve always preferred Under Armour gear while I was playing baseball back when they just did sleeves/cold weather gear. Having seen the kind of things that they have available at Auburn now, I’ve definitely been impressed.

Plus, all my manager issued gear from Adidas is starting to wear out and I need some new stuff. I have a feeling Under Armour will be taking quite a bit of money from me very soon.
