NDN is not a football board. In fact, the football part is not even the oldest part. Football is the most prominent, but there are separate discussion areas for men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, hockey, and other sports.

Politics is a branch-off from the Back Room. They split it off because political discussions were overwhelming everything else in the Back Room, and I think it’s been a smashing success. It remains an interesting place to stop by to get the pulse of the right-wing, though you can’t ever mistake it for a home for balanced discussion (in that sense, it does have something in common with Rock’s House).

The Bob Stoops and Urban Meyer yen were (are) all about self-esteem. There are a bunch of fans whose self-identity is so caught-up in the fortunes of ND football that they needed ND to “make a statement” by hiring a big name. There’s also an aspect of post-hoc reasoning emanating from a certain NDN personality’s hard-on for a certain elsewhere-employed AD who was not hired at ND (presumably, arising from some sort of personal relationship, as there’s nothing in his professional history to make him worthy of that degree of boosterism for the ND job).

Coincidentally, similar post-hoc reasoning appears to accompany any discussion about Kelly. I think NDN (specifically, Rock’s House, Cartier tends to be less crazy) jumped the shark when people were seriously suggesting that it could be a good idea to kick Kelly to the curb to get Urban Meyer. As in, right now.

Ironically, on the basketball side of things, The Pit takes a completely opposite tack with Brey. (And yes, I’ve seen the rationalizations of it. I think they significantly understate the challenges Kelly faced coming in.)

I think it got such low ratings because people are reacting with emotion. They’re emoting. His response is reasonable. The challenge is that it doesn’t matter all that much – the editing and agenda-pushing you’re talking about are the bigger issues.

Just some belated Thanksgiving wishes based on the above, very thoughtful discussion:
(1) As a 4th generation Notre Dame ex-pat, based in France for sixteen years, first let me thank the NDNation guys for having built a web site that does an awful lot of work linking its users to the world of Notre Dame football. I am sure they’re not doing it for the money, and they have certainly provided a service… without which I would most likely never have discovered THIS web site! Which leads to my next point:
(2) Many many thanks to “Her Loyal Sons” for a well-researched, insightful, and informative web site. I completely concur with the positive comments about HLS expressed above. Whoever you guys are, my deepest thanks.
(3) Same goes for “One Foot Down.” Nice job over there. And also to Keith Arnold on the NBC site. You are all the greatest.
As for the thrust of the above discussion – unfortunately, the vast majority of posters above are absolutely correct. Somehow, the inner core on “Rock’s House” have become a clique collectively dominated by overly negative and even virulent viewpoints. Sometimes negativism can happen in life – thank goodness neither our coaches or players or most of our fan base seem to have been overly infected by this regrettable tendency.
So, here’s thanking all of you I mentioned above for everything you’ve done to help me and my boys stay abreast of that one special aspect of Our Lady’s university and family that has always meant a lot to all of us.

And to our NDNation brethren – hoping you have a swift return from the Dark Side – “there’s good in you, I can feel it!”

I use NDN for their link page, nothing more. It’s a nice way to find all the ND posts/articles of the day, and I don’t ever post on or read the boards stuff.

I’ll take them at their word when they say they want to see ND win in football. But they would be much happier to have their low opinions of Kelly, Swarbrick, and the rest of the administration vindicated.

Someone said (onNDN) what would your opinion be if we were 10-1, and some of the answers were that it would not change their opinion. If we went 12-0 the haters would point out that no less than 50 sure interceptions were dropped, and anyway, we didn't run the ball enough to be true champions.
