If you think that phrase was meant in an elitist way, you must not have understood how it was meant. It’s simply true. You don’t know Notre Dame unless you are a part of it. Period.

Having attended and graduated I can almost agree with your what you’re trying to say… but if you really think that Notre Dame “does not do humble well,” well, I’m sorry you didn’t get the full experience that I did. I’m not saying there isn’t a sense of arrogance and elitism among a minority of the student body–I even had a letter published in The Observer commenting on it–but it’s not the norm, and I’m sorry if you failed to meet the thousands of bright, caring, and indeed, humble students who go there.

Having confidence, living with purpose and knowing you’re in a special place are not antithetical to humility.

I love the place too (I went there but did not graduate) and I must tell you that that very phrase is as elitist as you can get and if you want a reason why Notre Dame is hated by many people that is as good a reason as any.

Notre Dame does many things well, but one of the many things she does NOT do well is humble, and that does not speak well for a University who wants others to think of her as Catholic.

That having been said – I hope USF gets a fine butt-kicking this weekend.
