]]> It appears that the University of Texas wants to maximize television viewers on college football’s opening weekend on Labor Day…and remain undefeated for another 24 hours.

The Irish and Texas Longhorns square off in Darrell K. Royal Stadium in Austin, and because the NFL season hasn’t yet begun, the game has been moved to Sunday. The (presumable) primetime matchup will provide a large and captive audience on Labor Day weekend. I joked on April Fools’ Day about Brian Kelly’s rumored NFL aspirations, but this seems to be a good move in terms of visibility for television audiences amidst a crowded football slate on Saturday.

For Notre Dame, this marks the first non-Saturday matchup since a Thursday road game at Vanderbilt in 1996, and the first Sunday game….well, ever (as far as we know). Our hearts go out to those who have a) scheduled flights home on Sunday and b) have church obligations on Sunday night.

My spicy offseason sportstake: This is a smart move by Texas to get an uncluttered timeslot for a marquee home game. Notre Dame fans should feel pretty great about this too.
