When you think of classic sports rivalries, you probably think of Red Sox vs. Yankees, Bears vs. Packers, Lakers vs. Celtics, Florida vs. Georgia Southern.

What you may not realize because your head is focused on field turf and jumbotrons, is that the rivalry between Notre Dame and Connecticut in women’s basketball is about as vitriolic as you’ll find in sports these days.

For two decades, UConn had dominated the former Big East. Conference champions nineteen times; fifteen Final Four appearances; Eight national championships. Geno Auriemma has had one of the greatest runs as a single school’s head coach in any sport; up there with Knute Rockne and John Wooden.

He’s also about as trustworthy as a central Texas used car dealer.

If you paid even a modicum of attention in the nineties, you probably know about UConn and Tennessee. Tennessee got the best of UConn for the most part, but Tennessee’s head coach Pat Summit’s disdain for Auriemma grew to the point that she refused to schedule regular season games against the Huskies. On the court rivalries are one thing, but the Auriemma’s antics as a recruiter (going so far as to have reportedly told girls that UConn had no lesbians on the team like Tennessee) are above and beyond healthy competition.

Enter Muffet McGraw and Notre Dame.

As McGraw slowly built up one of the top programs in the nation, the rivalry with Connecticut also grew. Notre Dame began peaking in 2000 with their national championship, but never seemed to quite get over their relationship with big sister UConn until the last few seasons. Despite winning three times during the 2010-11 season, Notre Dame upset Connecticut’s chances at a three-peat with a victory over the Huskies in the Final Four before losing to Texas A&M in the finals.

From there, the Fighting Irish kept winning. McGraw’s squad has won seven of the last ten meetings with the Huskies, including two Final Four victories and made 2013 the first time Connecticut hadn’t won the Big East tournament since 2005.

After 2013, Notre Dame moved on to join the ACC and Connecticut was left behind in newly formed AAC. With no regular season games scheduled between the two, both teams went on to produce undefeated teams. They top the nation in almost all stat categories and dominated almost every single game they played. As the season progressed, it seemed destiny that the two would finally meet in the NCAA Finals.

So how do the coaches feel about each other and their respective teams? Insert Monday’s presser.

According to McGraw, the terms “hate” and “lack of civility” would best be used to describe the rivalry. She claims that what little civility existed between the teams while in the same conference had disappeared this last year, and even seemed to take a shot at ESPN by continuing, “But I think after beating them and still not feeling any respect for that, we definitely lost something.”

It’s not a secret that ESPN plays up the home team Huskies to sickening degrees. Just watch any Notre Dame game and count the amount of times UConn, its coach or its players are mentioned. Now do the same thing for a Huskies game and count Notre Dame references. Not even close.

And that’s okay. In fact, it’s probably a good thing. Why? Because despite winning all 37 games it has played this season, it seems like they’re still a huge underdog. That’s great for the locker room. It keeps the women hungry. It makes them mad. It’s what drives Jewell Loyd to play the most ferocious defense this side of Dennis Rodman. It’s what leads a team to out-rebound a Final Four opponent 50-21.

It wasn’t just the coaches going back and forth yesterday, it was also the players. All-Americans Kayla McBride and Brianna Stewart both admitted that the teams simply don’t like each other. No more. No less. It’s a rivalry, and in rivalries the slightest bit of bulletin board material can be the difference between a game-winning offensive rebound put back and watching the other team get sprinkled in confetti.

But today isn’t about talking. It isn’t about the Big East and it isn’t about rivalries.

It’s about who gets to cut down the nets; who gets their one shining moment; who gets the offensive rebounds and loose balls.

It’s about making sure we get to see a Jewelly-oop late in the second half to go up by 12 points while Stephanie Dolson is sitting on the bench because the referees FINALLY started calling her for moving screens and errant elbows.

It’s about making sure that our head coach is STILL the champion of fashion on the court.

It’s about ruining the early-week study plans of RAs in Storrs, Connecticut.

It’s about ND Family.

We have some unfortunate news for the Notre Dame women’s basketball team. After an MRI, Natalie Achonwa did, in fact, tear her ACL in a non-contact injury suffered late in the Baylor game. Achonwa will undergo surgery, but the date has not been set yet. Either way, her career at Notre Dame ended prematurely and her presence on the court will be terribly missed. 

In an absolutely amazing display of consistency and success, seniors on the Notre Dame women’s basketball squad will have gone to the Final Four every season during which they were enrolled at the university.

Losing the first two seasons in the championship game, and last season in the national semifinal, Notre Dame still hasn’t held up the big trophy since 2000. But after a gut-checking, gritty, physical, emotional, and potentially costly victory against Baylor in South Bend, the Fighting Irish continue their undefeated season and move on to their fourth-straight Final Four appearance and hope to make this year count the most. They join Tennessee, Connecticut, Stanford, LSU, and Louisiana Tech as the only teams to have achieved this feat. (It should be noted that Tennessee has done it three times, Connecticut has only missed 2005-07 since Y2K and both Stanford and LSU had five year streaks)

We don’t usually post a lot of non-football Notre Dame sports around here (I think I alone have quadrupled that category in just a month or so), but we couldn’t help but bring you a little reading material to help you board the bandwagon and have an excuse to wear more Irish gear next weekend than you normally do.

But if you’re going to jump onto the train to Nashville, you should probably know a little bit about the station of origin.

The Names

Topping the list is ACC Player of the Year and unanimous first team All-American, Kayla McBride. Stepping up from the side kick role last season, McBride has taken control of the team as its leader and there wasn’t a hint of production drop-off from the Skylar Diggins years. At 17 points per game and a 2-to-1 assist ratio, she placed herself into national player of the year conversations.

Not as hyped early, but quickly climbing the highlight reel ladder, is sophomore star guard Jewell Loyd. She leads the team with over 18 points per game and insane amounts of energy and talent. She quietly passed Diggins’ record for points scored in the first two seasons during the Baylor game, and since the start of the ACC tournament Loyd has been an incredible force all over the court. She has a pestering defensive presence and is just as likely to score from twenty feet out as she is on an offensive rebound (leading the team with 90). Also surprisingly, she is third on the team with blocks.

Leading that stat is senior Natalie Achonwa. Probably the most improved player in the starting lineup this season, Achonwa has gone from serviceable to elite in one season. Her points have gone up and defense has been far more reliable, especially on backside help situations. Sadly, as I’m sure many of you have likely heard, Achonwa suffered a non-contact knee injury late in the Baylor game and will be undergoing an MRI today. Although this type of injury doesn’t usually bode well, seeing her return to the sidelines without crutches and climb a ladder to help cut the nets gave Irish fans a slight glimmer of hope.

The Season

Notre Dame actually coasted through most of their games this season. They’ve scored in triple digits six times, including a 25 point victory over #14 ranked North Carolina. The second-most prolific offense in the nation wins games by an average of more than 25 points per game (also second-ranked), including a 19 point victory over Baylor, which comes in third in both stats. They also lead the nation in field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage.

With three games against Duke and the final one coming in the ACC championship, there is a budding rivalry after just the first season of new conference play but after learning from Connecticut for two decades, the Irish are already the cream of the ACC crop. There was almost a palpable jealousy on the court when Duke, the team that traditionally has owned the conference, just couldn’t stay within ten points of the Irish all season. And other than about ten minutes to start the second game, there wasn’t a moment in the season where it wasn’t obvious how much better Notre Dame is at all spots on the roster, down to the last player.

The Play

With all the beauty of a McBride pull up jumper or an Achonwa tap in, there’s one play that exemplifies the 2013-14 Fighting Irish team.

Following along, even if only quietly and slightly embarrassed for watching women’s sports, to the season this year, you may have heard the phrase “Jewelly-oop”. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like and no, the spunky little sophomore guard doesn’t dangle from the rim like Vince Carter. Loyd has a disturbingly good knack for finding creases that would make her a great slot receiver and is always looking for the ball. Her teammates oblige with sharp passes underneath the basket for backdoor layups. Now these aren’t just pick-and-rolls in half court sets. These are fast breaks and transition plays that electrify the crowd and anyone lucky enough to see the game on television.

The Future

The Irish were the first team to qualify for this year’s Final Four, and were quickly followed by Connecticut who is continuing their own unbeaten season in Nashville next week. Those teams were by far the top two all season from the very beginning. They’ve played and destroyed all the top opposition…except each other. ESPN and the NCAA are begging for the marquis matchup a week from today, and we’re just one more step away from it.

Before that, however, the Irish will have to face the winner of tonight’s game between  No. 3 seed Louisville and No. 4 seed Maryland (7pm EST, ESPN) on Sunday night, and UConn will go against the winner of  No. 2 seed Stanford or No. 4 seed North Carolina following immediately afterwards. Stanford is the only real threat out of those four teams to beat either Notre Dame or Connecticut, and even that is a pretty big “what if”.

Should all indications hold, we’re going to be set up to watch what might be looked back upon as one of the greatest (and most important) games in women’s college basketball history. It will likely be the most watched, most anticipated game…and with all the stars and history, I just don’t see how it could disappoint.

Coach Muffet McGraw would say that we can’t look past either Louisville or Maryland, and that’s fine for the locker room. But I’m not in the locker room. I fully expect to see Notre Dame play on Tuesday night against Connecticut. And I fully expect to be going completely nuts when it happens.

I’m always intrigued by this time of year. It seems like so much (national signing day, NFL combine/draft, spring practices) is going on and yet so little is actually happening. We fantasize about our abilities to grow VanGorder-like mustaches and drink from our Figthing Irish cups. But there is so much more to do, right now, Irish fans.

Yes, I know Everett Golson is back and will be dueling Malik Zaire for the starting quarterback spot this spring, but before that, did you know that Notre Dame boasts one of the best up-and-coming softball teams this year? That’s right, ND Softball is young and their tweets can be quite entertaining, if not informative. Easily the best live-tweeting action from Notre Dame athletics.

It also won’t hurt to watch them battle for a very winnable ACC title. Only Florida State, ranked 10th, is ahead of the 24th ranked Irish squad at this point.

Speaking of ACC titles, remember how exciting it was to watch the football squad go unblemished through the regular season in 2012? Well, turn your heads a few feet east and watch Muffet McGraw lead a stellar (thus far) undefeated women’s basketball team in the Purcell Pavilion. They clinched the regular season ACC title with their second win against Duke this year.

That’s two conference championships in two years. In two different conferences. Take that, Nick Saban.

In all honesty, if you don’t yet know the name Kayla McBride, you just aren’t doing yourself justice. Between her and Jewell Loyd, Notre Dame has one of the best back courts in all of women’s basketball. They are on an almost inevitable collision course to face their long-time rivals, UConn, in the finals. Seriously, don’t miss that kind of stuff. The last few games have made Duke vs. North Carolina look like Northwestern vs. Penn State.

Speaking of missing things, did you give up on Irish hockey’s chances at going to the NCAA tournament? Pay attention, because a win against Boston College this Saturday could put them into one of the last at-large spots after they gave Boston University a double dose of Summerhays shutouts last weekend (for what was actually their third straight shutout). The team is late to the party, but peaking at the right time and selection committees love that stuff.

There are plenty of exciting things going on in South Bend right now, and spring football is just one among them.

But if you want that football fix…if you NEED that football fix, just remember how awesome it is that we still get to be entertained by one of the greats: Mr. Louis Nix III. I hope that man never leaves a microphone behind.

 Coach Muffet McGraw’s Fighting Irish gave as good as they got against Geno Auriemma’s Huskies for the first fifty combined points. ND was up 26-25 with 3:44 to go in the first half when things went pear-shaped for the Irish. The half ended with Notre Dame down 39-29 and everyone wondering what happened to Skylar Diggins.

Notre Dame’s talismanic leader, Skylar Diggins was as cold last night as a mint julep cup. Limited to two points on free throws in the first, she finished her career with just ten points on a sorry 3-15 from the field. Despite her defense, 4 steals and 3 blocks, and distribution, 8 assists, she was unable to get anything going.

After that 26-25 lead was lost, nothing worked last night for ND, who never got closer than six points distant from the rampant Huskies in the second half. Swaths of time melted from the clock as Irish shots missed their mark. With the final seconds dripping away, Notre Dame ultimately crumbled and lost, 83-65.

In a city where stories are written as freely and as fast as sazeracs are poured, two freshmen penned new chapters in their teams’ legends. For UConn, Brenna Stewart led all scorers, hanging 29 points on the Irish and giving them fits on the defensive end of the court. For Notre Dame, Kayla McBride had the high hand, netting 16 points. Of the fallout from the Big East’s demise, that these two won’t be able to square off regularly is among the most disappointing.

Both teams travelled well. If you watched the early game, in which Louisville clawed back to defeat Cal and punch their ticket into the final, you saw that only about eleven people were able to free themselves from the Crescent City’s embrace and make it to the Arena. By the time the Irish tipped off, UConn and Notre Dame had sizeable contingents who were in full throat. The pregame festivities, put on by the Alumni Association and the Monogram Club, were well-attended and Ruth Reily and other former players signing autographs and mingling with the fans.

It was a disappointing showing by the Irish and by Diggins in particular. She’s the most decorated and accomplished female athlete in Irish history, with a successful professional career all but guaranteed. Last night’s defeat will not dull her legacy’s lustre or the affection South Bend and Notre Dame have for their hometown hero. Still, in the light of the day after, as crumpled ticket stubs swirl in the eddies along the muddy waters of the Mississippi, something feels that the Irish left something on the table last night and failed to rise to the moment.
