Thanks for your memories and comments. And yes, Jimmy Johnson and Mark Richt couldn't be more different...yet another reason I think it's forced to continue with that game name.

I was already a Notre Dame graduate and well into adult life in 1985-1990, so I remember the "Catholics vs. Convicts" very well. I was at the 1988 game in South Bend and, in fact, made it a point to attend the 1987 game in Miami because I despised Jimmy Johnson so much that I wanted to be there to see him lose. My big gripe was that in 1985, Johnson and his Miami hooligans intentionally ran up the score and intentionally humiliated nice guy Gerry Faust in his last game with his beloved ND. I didn't like the rest of the bragging, showboating, trash talking and general poor sportsmanship displayed by the Miami players, enabled by Pork Face Satan, but I figured that was all hype and irrelevant nonsense and none of my concern. Despite all that, I never really liked or felt comfortable with the "Catholics vs. Convicts" slogan because I thought it revealed some poor sportsmanship on ND's part. With the passage of years, my middle finger still twitches whenever I see Jimmy Johnson's smirking mug on NFL Sunday, but I hope that regardless of the outcome of Saturday's game the players for both teams can shake hands and congratulate each other for a game well fought. But SAVE JIMMY JOHNSON'S A** FOR ME! Go Irish!
