I see it like this – if you can’t defend your home turf against the 19th ranked team (which you beat by around 50 points the year before) you don’t deserve to be #1, especially when FSU beat Florida on Florida’s home turf.

In reply to TERRY. FSU still sickens me. You cannot finish #2 in any universe with an identical record when you beat the other team head to head. That was the Bobby Bowden lifetime achievement award.

Your question “would a one loss Notre Dame team be left out of the playoff in this day and age?” Good question.

Your answer is yes. My answer is this – if they lost early in the season they could come back. If they lost late in the season they could not. Best example – Alabama losing AT HOME early in the 2012 season to Texas A.&M.

I suspect that we’ll be debating this issue for quite some time. But, when the playoffs expand to 8 teams, a one loss ND team could make it depending on SOS.

Notre Dame is a national university in large part due to being independent in football. Joining a conference would turn Notre Dame into a regional school, just like everyone else. In addition, under the current agreement, Notre Dame is the only “ACC school” to play every other university every 3 years and home and away every 6 years. Some ACC schools don’t play each other at all for 6 or 7 year stretches.

In reply to TERRY. I agree with the uniqueness point. But one thing to consider also, would a one loss Notre Dame team be left out of the playoff in this day and age? I think they would. You would have all the media types criticizing their lack of conference affiliation for their reasoning. So it is go undefeated or no playoff in my opinion. Not much of a margin of error there.

“We’re Notre Dame and you’re not” – IMO that rather arrogant – and true – statement is part and parcel of this ongoing argument. Through good and bad years we have had an ongoing agreement with NBC to televise all the home games – because we can. There is something unique about Notre Dame that you can’t really put your finger on but it’s there, and if we were to join the ACC as a permanent member that uniqueness would be gone.

We’re Notre Dame and you’re not.

FYI – I am 73 years old, I went to ND in the 60s but never graduated. I listened to the 1966 Southern Cal game on a shortwave radio while on a mid-watch in Turkey.,
