I disagree on one thing: I believe that the majority of the reporters the in the recruiting/premium space know quite well that most of what they are putting out is educated guesswork. I would go further and say their "educated" part of the guess has more to do with their experiences in being on the beat rather than what their sources tell them.

What I do agree with is the overall point in that things seem to have gotten out of hand. Rumors are broken as news for the subscription paying audience. Worse is that it seems some posters on some of these boards then try to pass themselves off as experts with sources. It just becomes one giant cluster.

If I were to compare it to anything, it would be the subscription-based pro wrestling "dirtsheets". People pay to be in the loop for rumors. The crazy part about this is that people are pretty well aware that these rumors end up being true at about a coin-flip rate, but still want in on the information. It's weird, even as a huge wrestling fan I don't understand it.

When this same desire translates to amateur athletes and teenagers, it can fall into the disgusting far too often when discretion goes by the wayside.

Great post, sir. Really hoping this spurs some good discussion. Obviously, this is something I feel rather strongly about.
