Notre Dame’s head of football media relations, Brian Hardin (@NDHardin), took to the Twitter machine to break the news of Coach Kelly’s decision to suspend both Tommy Rees (QB) and Carlo Calabrese (ILB). Neither will make the trip to Ireland.
Kelly’s statement in its entirety was, “Our players understand that it’s a privilege to be associated with the University of Notre Dame and its football program, but with that comes great responsibility. Carlo and Tommy put themselves in a situation that when given a choice between two distinct paths, they responded with a set of poor decisions. This conduct was inconsistent with my expectations for our football program – especially our veteran, team leaders. Carlo and Tommy will not travel with the team to Ireland and can attempt to climb the depth chart following the conclusion of their respective sentences.”
I expected this. This was the right move by Coach. It’s gutting for Tommy and Carlo and I hope the team gets it and gets behind the new QB.
Buckle up, loyal readers. It’s going to an interesting 31 days.

Golson it is!
Go Irish!

In no way am I feeling good about this in respect to Rees, I would have preferred he lost his spot to actual competition, but the stress is off for the team and they can focus on a new guy for Dublin. They have 31 days to get their heads around it, this will work folks.

We are Goldrix. We must lead. We must be the most successful mobile quarterback since Tony Rice.

As far as the suspensions, I think they are justified. Rees’ especially, as he made a series of bad moves.
Terry
Good move, coach. Get it out of the way now and that of course also helps with the QB question. It’s down to Hendrix and Golson.
31 days to go.

I feel bad for Rees and Carlo missing Dublin, but this is the right move. Their timing was very unfortunate. That said, fall camp will be much less stressful for me, and this does give the players time to get used to it.

I feel really, really bad for these guys on a personal level. I can’t imagine how gutted they must feel. But this is necessary and proper.
I’m still intrigued by the semi-cryptic “can attempt to climb the depth chart” comment, though…
Picked Off
I get the call, but with Floyd’s DUI only being about a year ago with zero games missed, I’m sure the national media will scream favoritism. At first glance, it seems a little strange when you compare to Floyd.

Thank God that Kelly can’t start Rees. Although Kelly is either too blind or dumb to see it, Golson is made for the spread offense. Golson is a winner, but with Kelly’s purple haze meltdowns, all bets are off.

They’re missing a trip to Ireland and they’re still on the team. I don’t feel “sorry” for them, they’re lucky to still be on the team after that conduct. btw, rees lost his starting job based on his work on the field every week from what i saw last year so it’s really a win win
