In reply to MarkG. MarkG, this is a brilliant idea! I tried it with the Oregon St vs Iowa St game tonight, and it worked great! Paused it before each snap to give myself a look at the formations, and rewound to watch the action of the linebackers or whomever I was interested in. The game is really fascinating when you don't have anyone jibber jabbering away in the background. Thanks for the suggestion!

I am not a doctor, but I have watched people who play doctors on TV. So here is my prescription. Step away from the keyboard, pour yourself a tall drink, and breathe in … and now breathe out. Then, repeat … particularly the strong drink part.

Then, tune into some college game tonight that you do not give two hoots about, turn the sound down, and just watch the game. Do not watch the pregame, and definitely do not listen to the announcers during time outs. Ignore the teams, and just watch the game. Or better yet tune into some high school playoff game tonight or tomorrow on channel 173, and just watch the game. Watch for the beauty and the power, the things that drew all of us to football when we were kids playing it and watching it.

You will feel better. And you will be in a better frame of mind to watch the Irish manhandle BC tomorrow.

Greed and corruption were a part of college sports before boosters and TV execs. Consider the scandals that rocked William & Mary and even West Point in the 40s and 50s. Unfortunately, as your post suggests, the influx of ESPNs and tickers and Twitter feeds not only fuels that greed, but means today’s soul-sucking stories are on a relentless, dizzying loop. It can indeed become defeating.

Anyway, as an Irish fan, you’ve found the elusive college girl that is equally hot, mostly normal, and accepting to your football/golf/beer/Copenhagen/Saved by the Bell/late night Taco Bell addictions.

Hang on to her. There aren’t many.

So true about the offseason. Last week when the PSU stuff broke big and JoePa got canned, all the sordid details were so awful that my first thought was “wow, what a shitty season, we need to just hurry up and get to the end of it.” But then I realized that if the season ends, then all we’re left with is stories about pedophiles, and coverups, and NCAA investigations, and conference realignment. That stuff doesn’t end–only the good stuff, the games. So I don’t want this season to end–I want it to last forever, and at least let us talk about something besides all that garbage.
