i dunno trey. the rule says ‘throwing the ball high up in the air’. if i see him make that toss, i’d probably think ‘hey that’s high’. maybe afterwards i’d feel bad about doing it – but these calls are gut reactions at a split second. i might want to pick up the flag after i throw it, but i’d probably throw it too. that ball looked high to me.

Amen biscuit on the “no celebration policy.” To deny people the chance to show their joy after a play like that is ludicrous.

However, yes, he DID get screwed. The rule is so unbelievably vague, any enforcement of it is by definition subjective, so the ref put himself in position to be accused of determining the output of the game.

HA. The rules back then were way less clear/strict, that’s why WE got screwed. The rules this year are way more strict. What’s best about it is that in his role as ‘head coach rep’ or whatever, TY had input into the new rules. So, while I say he didn’t get screwed on the call, he screwed himself by helping usher those rules in. Even better, yes?

They should just get rid of the rule in general. No such thing as excessive celebration ever again. It’s sports – I like excessively celebrating. Only unsportsmanlike call should be late hits, helmet-to-helmet, etc – things that can get someone hurt. Not things that might hurt their feelings. It’s freaking football!

He got screwed. He got screwed by a really stupid rule. He got screwed just like ND vs. Michigan (sucks!) back when we were undergrads and our guy made a dumb frat-sign even though there are not frats at ND. He got screwed, and it was beautiful. Do not try to take that away from me.

I disagree. Rule 9212 states: “After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot.” I know Locker didn’t mean to be disrespectful and I feel bad for the kid. And a ref shouldnt really determine the outcome of a game. But 1) They should’ve played better earlier and it wouldnt have been an issue 2) If the kicker kicks the ball well it’s good – he hit a freaking line drive and 3) The rule is the rule, and the ref just followed it correctly. Suck for UW? Yes. But no one got screwed.
