Just a thought- if the Big East ends up failing after getting poached, some people think that we’ll be forced to give up our football independence because the BCS conferences won’t provide a home for all of our other sports without football included.
But how about this- if we truly want to maintain our football independence, couldn’t we take all of our other sports to a non-BCS conference? A-10, Conf-USA, MAC? If the Big East is gone, I don’t really see a huge advantage to playing basketball (and other sports) in the Big-10, ACC, or another BCS conference, when plenty of these other conferences field multiple good to great teams that routinely compete well in March Madness and other post-season tournaments.

I think the idea is certainly worth exploring, but I have to guess there’s some issue with the sizes/revenues/power of the schools in such small conferences.
One really interesting thing to keep in mind with all this is that so many of the olympic sports don’t really even participate much in the Big East right now, so there is flexibility there. But I think the notion of a “peer instituion” will play a factor if ND joins a new conference either fully or without Football.

As much as other conferences want to posture about us being “all or nothing” in regards to membership, I think conferences would still take only our non-football sports despite that. Having the ND feather in your cap is still huge, plus JS can always say “hey, when the BCS contract is renegotiated in 2014, we may be forced to join anyways”.
If you were in charge of a conference, being able to have that “foot in the door” with ND is mighty tempting, even if it never happens.
