I’d categorize myself as an average viewer when it comes to football on TV. I’m not keying in on anything outside of where the ball is, for both offense and defense – and I’m keen to watch offense more closely. That being said, I can’t help but notice that our defense could be even BETTER then it is now if we cleaned up some of the poor tackling and better play out of our LBs and DBs (other than G. Gray who we all know has not had the best season).
Seems as if this was further reflected in the Pitt game with some of the poor angles taken (e.g., Fox on a number of plays). I wonder if we’ll see a remarked improvement with Spond back and healthy – and if Manti can kick it up another notch. I know he’s playing well, but I thought he’d have more of a monster season so far and that hasn’t really been the buzz, right? Someone smarter than me can perhaps shed some light on the D, are we simply a better team against the run and are weak in coverage/space with our LBs and DBs? I would hope that as this season carries on and our DL can develop into a consistent force, our pass defense can improve a bit?
Thoughts?

Manti is playing a ton of “assignment football”. So he’s not always available to roam free and destroy. He’s made a few over-pursuit mistakes, but that was mostly against Denard.
If Gray can ever recapture a feel for tracking the ball in the air, ND could be a top 5 defense.
