(let’s hope it’s his last. Zing!) Just a bogglingly poor play. Dig/Post combo, read safety, throw the ball where he ain’t. It’s so simple, a bunch of peopl know it from running it on video games. And read/execute it well. Just mind-blowingly bad. |

Agree. I think Kelly finally realizes it also. Notice he did not say anything about Rees being 12 and whatever as a starter when asked. He described, in a tone of disbelief, exactly what you described above. That is the first time I can ever remember him being openly critical of Rees like that. |

I think Kelly always realized it, but felt he had no better options (and yes, I include Crist in this). As MQ has said before, word that we’ve heard was that Kelly wasn’t exactly high on any other options at QB. Kelly has even referenced this in pressers saying that Rees starting was a decision based off the collective unit. It’s the major downside to having your senior QB completely fall apart at the seems and having very young backups. I’m sure it was taking all of Kelly’s willpower to not set fire to Golson’s redshirt, but I just can’t help but feel that Golson is Kelly’s master plan. You know, the whole “it’s my guys now” theory. |

I’m not sure about that. I agree that he probably realized that Rees wasn’t the best long term answer. But I think he also thought he could coach him up to a much higher level than he ever actually reached. During one of the earlier games (Michigan maybe) a sideline camera recorded him telling Rees after a good pass that if he could do that consistently ND would win a whole bunch of games. I think he believed Rees would get there and I think that explains why he was so patient with him. That was a gamble that ultimately backfired. He alienated Crist and his supporters in the locker room, failed to get his younger QBs experience, and lost a whole bunch of games along the way. I don’t want to sound like Kelly basher because I think he has done some really good things at ND. But he badly bungled this QB situation. He wasn’t dealt the greatest hand, but he also played the wrong cards. |

From what we have heard and pieced together, to say that Kelly gambled on Rees may be true, but it’s equivalent to betting on the pass line in craps. Best odds you can get, but you can still lose the house in about 10 minutes. |

I Think Rees was the only one that could pre snap read well. He just sucked post snap. |

Which was the poorer pass, his last INT or his last TD pass??? |

This is the first ND game I have watched while also monitoring twitter and I got some good laughs after the tweets that people send out after that “TD” pass. A lot of jokes about how Floyd intercepted the ball from the intended target. |

On 4th and 20 with a few seconds left throwing that ball the way he did was a good risk. On first down, with lots of time, that ball needs to be thrown into the mezzanine. It was obvious from the replay that nobody was open, including Goodman. The hardest thing for any QB to master, especially with a win in view, is to come back for the next play. Tommy never mastered that. In fairness to both Rees and Hendrix in that game, is that other than Floyd and Eifert, only Toma caught a pass. I saw Tailer Jones line up on every play, but I think he ran to the bench on his routes. If we are going to only have two effective receivers, we can use the others as blockers. My view is that we should only view ourselves as having one starting WR next year, and that is Toma. The other two spots should be open. |

Tailer Jones gets a lot a crap from ND fans – he’s still a true sophomore. I can’t say whether or not he was running lousy routes but I’m sure Rees only has 2 reads at the most on a given play. If Floyd isn’t open he looks to Eifert and then gets sacked or throws an int. Floyd and Eifert are the 1s and 2s as they should be – we just don’t have a QB who can make it to the third progression. And yes, I do see the irony of sticking up for TJ when I’m bashing another true sophomore for his play. WRs need to have a QB that can make it through the progression though. |

Jones did get sort of open over the middle for a pass from Hendrix. The pass was about on the money, but Jones wasn’t able to hold onto it under heavy pressure from the DB. I think it could have been caught, but it’s far from the most egregious drop I’ve ever seen. |
