In case anyone didn’t get a chance to take a look at it, Keith over at NBC had a pretty interesting post looking at some numbers from Chuck Martin’s offense while he was at Grand Valley State. Pretty interesting for anyone who didn’t get a look, and some good rumor/insuation stuff in there from Keith as well. http://irish.nbcsports.com/2012/01/09/faced-with-adversity-kelly-turns-offense-over-to-martin/ He tilted much more heavily towards running the ball out of the spread. This does not necessarily mean anything, but is certainly interesting. And when combined with the fact that since the staff changes we seem to be pursuing Devin Fuller much harder and as a QB, perhaps the writing is on the wall for a preference towards more option and QB running. In light of some of this information, it looks much more interesting now, in hindsight, about who Kelly selected to come in and talk with his staff last Spring for clinic. It was Chip Kelly from Oregon, and Urban Meyer. |

It appears, and rightfully so, that the Rees era is over. I was a backer of Tommy throughout the season, but he seemed to plateau midway through 2011 and then decline rapidly. I’m anxious to see what Hendrix can do when he has an offense that is fitted to abilities. I’m equally anxious to see what Golson is all about. If the run QB is the future of ND football, best to get on with it and let the youngsters loose. I think 2012 will see some growing pains for the Irish…and some grumblings from the fan base. But as they say…The future is now. |

I think believing that the now much-more experienced Rees is “done” may be a mistake. We’ve seen plenty of QBs with a “sophomore slump” in the past. I’m not just going to assume he wont somehow manage to wow the coaches into getting playing time. I do think/hope the coaches are now working towards establishing their “ND Offensive Identity” and I think that includes heavy doses on running QBs. |

i enjoyed Keith’s article. But Kelly is the offensive coordinator and play caller and as such Martin’s impact on the offense will be minimal. I do think the offense will change next year because Kelly will have no choice. Without Floyd catching passes and drawing double coverage Kelly will need a quarterback that can make some plays with his legs, at least until D. Daniels and the freshman receivers can develop. Rees is done. Even if he could cut down on the interceptions, he isn’t a good fit for this offense. Game manager QBs do well on power running teams like Alabama, not spread teams like ND. And with the meat grinder schedule they play next year, it won’t matter who plays QB, ND will still lose 5 or more games. Kelly will realize that he may as well get Hendrix or Golson a year of experience to be ready for the make or break season of 2013. |

Let me start by saying this… if we had a better quarterback than Tommy Rees this past season who knows how many additional games we could have won. And I’m not so sure Dayne Crist would have been the answer, but at least he brought more physicality to the position, a much needed prerequisite in Coach Kelly’s offense. Now I hate dumping on Tommy but if these college QB’s are going to win the Heisman every year and get all the notoriety when their team wins then they have to get criticized when they fail. I’ll defer to Coach Kelly’s decisions throughout the season as it relates to the quarterback controversy that he himself created and the media kept rolling, but it’s time to stamp his mark on the 2012 offense and let it rip. Throw experience to the wind and let’s get the best fit person on the field at the most crucial position because I can’t handle another year of watching our offense stay bogged down due to a bad fit at QB. |
