I personally think that zone blocking is the best thing since sliced bread. It all depends on what you know how to coach. My team can run about fifteen plays off of two simple schemes. Our linemen work on the inside and outside zone all day, everyday and they get good at it. It is 80% of our offense. It is true that you lose ground to gain position. You must do this to gain leverage. The first step is geometry. You must have your second step in the ground before you make contact. There are three types of leverage. Gap leverage, pad level leverage, and hand leverage. If a player just fires out and hits the man that is lined up a foot in front of him, he will not get his second step in the ground and his pad level will raise straight up. He also will never get gap leverage. Defensive movement would hurt the play. Zone blocking allows for double teams at the point of attack, is a built in answer to slants, holds up to any front, and forces the defense to be scheme and assignment sound. Coaches have to teach what they know how to coach. Some understand zone blocking, some don't. Most teams do not have a Tom Thayer. If they did and he could block everybody by himself, they could run a one man iso scheme.

Remember that we, as Notre Dame fans, are the beneficiaries of hype. We see our consistently mediocre team covered more than pretty much any other program in the country. This will really just be an embarassment for Tebow, though. I am surprised he accepted. I'm not outraged that he was invited, because ratings are important. But he should not have accepted. He's not going to be drafted in the first round. He might be the only invitee that's still in his seat at the end of the first day (which now only includes the first round). Of course, some of my buddies back at UF said Tebow did look good at pro day. That might be enough to break into the second round.

The NFL must be planning on turning the Draft into a TV evangelical service. Gag.
As a QB it hard to see Tebow get drafted. He is tough running the football. But that won't work in the NFL, maybe in the CFL.

Does anyone remember how bad ND wanted Meyer? Looks like the Urban renewal potential at ND would have turned-into Cleveland. (sorry - I'm from Boston)

No way does this stick. Masoli I'm sure will do some community service this summer and repent and ESPN will claim he's a changed man and needs a second chance. Especially after Kelly figures out after spring ball how much he needs him. Dude should be kicked off the team.

Pat:
If you're looking for a specific example of how joining the Big 10 would seriously hinder Notre Dame's ability to carry out its mission, look at the American Association of Universities. The Big 10 does not technically require all of its schools to be members of the AAU, but it is STRONGLY preferred. Indeed, all current Big 10 members are also part of the AAU, and all but Purdue joined shortly after joining the conference. The AAU is a research organization that is heavily involved with embryonic stem-cell research, which I'm sure I don't have to say twice is not something Notre Dame looks kindly upon. There is not a chance in the world ND joins the AAU, so if they feel as though they will be pressured to join, I can't see ND becoming the 12th member of the Big 10.
