For Ty Willingham, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

domer.mq

The following is a list of Ty Willingham quotations that we found needed only slight alterations to sound as though they’re from a discussion over a break-up. And we didn’t have to edit some of these…

“What I always try to do is take Tyrone Willingham out of things. It’s not about me.”

“First thing is, as you know baby, this is a very difficult afternoon for me, just a very difficult afternoon.. To say I am disappointed, I think that very much misses the mark, but at the same time, I understand that I didn’t meet your expectations or standards, and when I don’t meet your expectations, it’s time to go.
Today I am no longer your man, and it doesn’t mean that life is over — life will go forward.
My goals have always been to inspire you to be the best you could be. I believe that I have been true to that in my time with you and appreciative of the opportunity and appreciative of what we have done and I am disappointed with what I didn’t do more than anything else.”

“When I think about how I work 8:00 in the morning until 11:30 at night for a stretch that probably runs from August to February, I think it’s not just commitment on my part.”

“No, I’ve never had a bad day. I’ve had bad moments, and sometimes those bad moments will run into another day that you’ll have hurt, pain, et cetera, but it’s still a day. There are so many blessings that Tyrone Willingham has that it’s amazing.”

“Let them see what we can do and what we have done successfully and then give you cures for what we have done incorrectly.”

“I’m not discouraged, but disappointed. … As a matter of fact, there is still a lot of light at the end of the tunnel. We just have to find a way to get to it.”

“I’ve done this before, … But it’s meaningful because there will be many others that will make something of it.”

“Everything gets more difficult. It adds another dimension to our lives.”

“…I didn’t think we lived up to our end of it.”

“How difficult has the year been for me? It would take me too long to tell you.”

“The first thing is, it’s exciting that people care. You never minimize that point in life. But hopefully there and here, I’ve done the right things.”

“We just haven’t made the things happen that we need to have happen. At the wrong times, we’ve made mistakes. We’ve had some wonderful efforts along the way, but effort is not what it’s about. It’s about finishing the task. That’s what we’ve got to do.”

If Ty Really Were Captain of the SS Tytanic

domer.mq

He’d be this guy if this guy had been the
captain and had no interest in self-preservation.

He’d cut the lines on the lifeboats and shoot anyone who tried to get off the ship. If he’s going down, everybody’s going down with him.

For 60 minutes Saturday night, Cody Bruns sat. Suffering from a slight hamstring injury, he watched with the rest of the 63,996 inside Husky Stadium, as Washington lost again, this time to Oregon State.

Two weeks earlier, for reasons that still don’t make sense, Washington coach Tyrone Willingham put freshman wide receiver Bruns into a lopsided loss at Arizona.

Bruns played three plays, but more important, he burned his redshirt season. After not playing for the first four games, after expecting to spend his first year of college learning the speed and the smarts of the game, Bruns’ season was wasted on three lousy plays.

And now he’s hurt.

[...]

It cost the freshman from Prosser a season. It made Washington look like a program that didn’t care about its players.

It felt like the move of an angry coach who knew he was in the last throes of his Seattle stay.

That decision is Willingham at his arrogant worst.

It is that typical my-way-or-the-highway approach that has turned so many Huskies fans and boosters against him.

Willingham has a history of cutting guys’ careers at Washington short. Willingham also has a history of being a horrible person and an even worse football coach.

Fraudriguez Offered Job to Dude that Might Be Racist. Or Might Not. Could Be Though!

The Biscuit

This really is just a confusing story on ESPN.  I’m not really sure what the point is, and after reading it I think I only get about 50% of what’s going on.  I only post and comment on it to 1) point out again that DickRod somehow manages to get tangled up in messy stuff constantly.  It’s fun!   And 2)  to mess with our loyal scUM reader or 2 out there.

It just seems that Fraudy McFrauderson tends to associate with shady people.   This will not serve him well over time.

Richy, you should listen to my grandpa, who always said: ”Son, don’t leave your alma mater and cheerleader girlfriend behind in the dead of night, shred your papers, refuse to pay your buyout and then go offer jobs to people from WVU that are accused of being racist.  The last step is the one that will get ya.”  Or something like that.

Fun Schadenfreude Fact of the Day

domer.mq

Charlie Weis and Notre Dame have won and will win as many games against Pac-10 teams in 2007 as Ty Willingham and Washington (2 wins each).

Bonus Fun Schadenfreude Fact of the Day:  Weis has won just as many games against Pac-10 opponents as Ty Willingham since Weis has been at ND and Willingham has been at Washinton (a total of 6 wins each since 2005).  Sub-bonus fact:  Weis and ND’s winning percentage against Pac-10 teams: 67%.  Willingham and UW’s winning percentage against Pac-10 teams: 23%.

(Hat tip to multiple sources across many ND Fan boards.)

Fun thing to ponder:  What are the chances of a Weis coached ND team beating a Willingham coached Washington team in 2008?

Texas A&M Not Really Serious About Football Anymore

domer.mq

Hey, remember when Texas A&M really meant something in football?  They had real pride in the program, had some interesting if not “cool” traditions, and were known for some excellent defense?

Well, apparently Texas A&M no longer takes football seriously.

COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M apparently will not waste much time in naming a replacement for football coach Dennis Franchione, who resigned under pressure after Friday’s win over Texas in the regular-season finale.

A new coach could be introduced as early as Monday but more likely Tuesday.

Texans assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, a former A&M offensive line coach and head coach of the Green Bay Packers, appears to be the leader in a three-man race.

Others under consideration are former Notre Dame coach and A&M defensive coordinator Bob Davie and Boise State coach Chris Petersen.

Exceeding All Expectations Sunday Thru Friday. Not.

domer.mq

The Washington fanbase may have to stop kidding itself now.  2 of Ty Willingham’s latest recruits in the class that achieved vertigo-inducing heights of a top-30 ranking may not be qualified academically for the 2007 season.  Awwwwwww.

Ty Golfs a Lot.

domer.mq

I don’t have a funnier headline than that right now.  I think I need a Gatorade or something.  Anyway, it’s enough for now, because all I really wanted to do was share this little column about Washington’s feelings for Ty and get to some excellent quotes:

Upon arrival at the pro shop, I talked to a U-Dub staffer who had some advice.

“If I can make a suggestion with Tyrone, he’s not one to bother while he’s golfing,” she said.

When I approached the 10th tee, Willingham was on the 10th fairway, and I almost went out there to bother him but stopped because I didn’t have good questions and he wouldn’t have good quotes even if I did.

and…

Sean, a Huskies fan who didn’t want to give out his last name, fearing what, I don’t know, said: “I think Ty’s a little overhyped. You talk to some of the alums, and they’re like: ‘Is there something else?’ They’re happy to have Ty, but they’re not enamored with Ty.”

Sean saw Willingham on the range and asked him about his handicap. “He’s a 7,” Sean said. “He’s not recruiting hard enough if he’s a 7.”

Heh.  Now I’m off to get some Rasperatermelime Rush or some such crap.

Willingham Not Bothered by Mora, Missed 3 Footer on the 9th

domer.mq

Tyrone Willingham is apparently not bothered by comments made by Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Jim Mora Jr.

“To be very honest, I haven’t thought very much about this until, gosh, it was a dead issue. I was doing what we do, which is recruit, and that’s where my focus was,” Willingham said Monday.

Mora had made comments on a radio talk show indicating that, if the Washington Huskies Head Coaching job were open, he’d leave Atlanta to take it.  These comments enraged Altanta Falcons ownership and made Huskies fans everywhere wonder where the hell Mora was back in 2004.

A Call For Change

Sinking Ty Willie

Dear Lord, Please Let This Happen

domer.mq

As Kermit mentioned yesterday, The Smith was fired from The Michigan State University.

Today the speculatin’ and hootin’ and hollerin’ and what-not begin.  And a Michigan (SUCKS!) paper has mentioned the unmentionable as a possible candidate for the job:

Tyrone Willingham, University of Washington head coach

Pros: Former MSU player has integrity and extensive head-coaching experience. Also has NFL ties.

Con: Coaching ability disproved questioned when fired from Notre Dame.

Lord, I don’t ask for much.  I mean, I was really only kidding when I asked for that car, the new job, a woman who would hold me.  And I know you came thru in a big way in the past, but I need to ask you for this one little favor: PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN.  See, the University of Washington is, well, far away.  And Notre Dame doesn’t play them much.  And few things would put a spring in the step of the world’s children like a yearly match-up between Weis and Ty Willie.  So please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please with whipped cream and a cherry on top, make this happen.  Please!  I swear I will never, ever, ask for anything again.  Ever.  Seriously.  I mean it this time.

If nothing else, think of the comedic value as Ty tries to recruit against Michigan, OSU, and Notre Dame.

Ty Willingham Blogs, Internet Brought To Its Knees

domer.mq

The folks at Every Game Counts have brought the world a blog post by Washington Football Head Coach, Philosopher, Poet, and Gentleman Ty Willingham.  The post is so obtuse that the combination of words actually caused a massive internet outage, as nothing so stupid had ever been posted on the web before.  In it, Willingham expresses how importantly he holds a work ethic in the grand scheme of things.  Notre Dame fans and the head pro at the Notre Dame Golf Course ask, “What Work Ethic?”  If one doesn’t have something, can one express how one holds something?  If one never actually coaches football, can one actually be a coach of football?  Questions for the ages.

Washington QB Out For Season. Ty Says Something Obtuse, Schedules Pebble Beach Tee Time.

domer.mq

Well, Ty Willingham has to be smiling to himself just a bit. Because whatever expectations were ever held for the University of Washington’s football program just jumped out of the window and broke like a pumpkin against the sidewalk of life because their starting QB is hobbled and wont be returning for the rest of the season.

Someone say “hobbled?”

Help End (one of) The Dumbest Rule(s) In Sports

domer.mq

EDSBS has a story up here about how the newest dumbest rule in sports has made Baby Jesus (a fan of ND, by the way) cry and rich, godless television executives cheer over their $100 bill wrapped cigars.

The guys at EDSBS have identified the best contact for your complaints/demands as:

Ty Halpin, NCAA Football Rules Committee Liaison
NCAA
P.O Box 6222
Indianapolis,Indiana 46206-6222

FAX: (317) 917-6800
E-mail: thalpin@ncaa.org

Time to unleash the power of the internets.

Notice too that this “person” who apparently plays a key role in shortening the game we all love so much is named “Ty.” Hmmmm… What other person named “Ty” would like to see his Saturday time commitments shortened so he can squeeze in an extra 18 holes?

The NCAA: Trying to ensure you see less of this…

And More of This…

Washington Moves Into Phase 2 of the Ty Willingham Experience…

domer.mq

After barely beating a vastly inferior opponent in their opening game of the 2006 season, the Fans and Alumni of the University of Washington and its Football Program are rapidly entering into Phase 2 of the Ty Willingham Experience.

As you can see here, the internet message boards are now participating in the strange dance we witnessed over the course of the 2003 season in which Notre Dame found itself battling divergent voices in its head. This schizophrenic shuffle will continue thru the rest of the season as Ty and Company manage to mangle their way thru the schedule, losing some games they should never lose, and then winning some games they should never have won after having lost those games which they never should have lost. Follow?

This, of course, will continue into Phase 3, where it is apparent to all of Washington’s fans but for a few pollyannas (sp?), who think he’s never really been given a chance to succeed, that Ty is completely unqualified to be a coach of anything, let alone a major college football program.

Still, given that Washington made the probably fatal mistake of hiring Willingham after Notre Dame “never really gave him a chance,” we anticipate that Washington may not just go on to experience Phase 3, but Phases 4 and 5 as well. And nobody’s really sure what happens after phase 5. Trying to explain what might happen if Ty Willingham is kept on contract for more than 5 years is sort of like trying to explain a square circle. The concept seems to be out there, but it’s an impossibility. Isn’t it?
